To be quite frank, no ******* idea..

I am an old AC player, I have always said to this day that no mmorpg that I played to date has come close to the fun and content of AC. I remember well back in the beta of AC how EQ was the running competitor to it and how pretty much the mmorpg crowd was growing pretty well on both games.

Im not sure how many of you played both but I and I know many others just stayed in one camp for years, me 6 years or so.

I was going to try AC again but for some strange reason the website sign up even for trial did not think my UK visa's were good enough, *rolls eyes* so was dissheartned right there. Then I thought well hmm look EQ with 12 additional packs/expansion for a fair amount, the content must be bloody large and I have never ever played the game back in the day or any time at all..

Knowing how I like the old mmorpg ideas and how deep and fun it was in them days I thought could I be really set for a LONG rebirth of that old feeling as a new player of EQ ( well old ) :P

What you think?

1) would you cut off your cats right ear to be able to play it for the first time all over again with all the additions to hand?

2) Or do you think Its time to move on its long in the tooth, and one would not benefit any epic fun feeling anymore?

Cheers...

p.s got 30 notes burning hole in pocket doing nothing today is another reason lol..

I played both, back then my g/f and I were going between EQ, AC1, and DAOC.  I'm not sure if you played EQ before or not, I couldn't tell.  But if you know what EQ is about and know what you are getting yourself into, then I'd say sure, go give it a try.  One of the 2 progression servers right now are packed full of returning players, many were vets that played in the early days.  It has been fun so far, and I did notice an UK guild (UK Alliance), as well as a few euro guilds (European Union) on Vulak.  So if you do decide to join in, make sure to check them out.

All 3 of these original classics were and still are my all time favorites.  I can't really place one above another, as I enjoyed them differently.  For AC1, I enjoyed it for FFA PvP on Darktide, as well as the true seamless world & character customization flexiblity.  For EQ1, I enjoyed it for the fantasy value, the lore, the big dragons and bosses, the classes, etc..  For DAOC I thoroughly enjoyed it for the 3 realm RvR gameplay.

I think if you are looking to play EQ again, you have to ask yourself whether you want to play the newer EQ on the regular servers, or if you want to play on the timelocked progression servers.  Newer EQ on regular servers have more updated features, more zones, and 17 expansions worth of content.  Timelocked progression servers are best for those looking to re-live the old days, progressing from classic content through various expansions slowly.  We are still at classic content at the moment, got at least a month and half to go before Kunark expansion vote comes up.  So if you want to re-experience the good 'ol days, now is the time.  Everybody on the prog servers are between level 1-50.

Whatever you choose, good luck and have fun image

Mardy summed it up quite nicely, something to add though is dependant on what type of player you are. If you are gear oriented, you are probably going to be put off by the progression servers because of how weak the gear was back in the day compared to the regular servers

An earing on my lvl 85 warrior on the regular server has more stats on it then my lv 50 warrior will have fully geared for the next several expansions lol.

Low level grouping is quite easier to do on the Progression servers as most players are low level and are bringing up different toons to get to max lvl 50.

This is all of course if you decide to take the leap. The Fippy server is the most heavily populated Progression server if you decide to take that route.

    Thanks for your replies.

Heck its a tough call, and no ive never ever played EQ, i did say somewhere in my post :D

"Then I thought well hmm look EQ with 12 additional packs/expansion for a fair amount, the content must be bloody large and I have never ever played the game back in the day or any time at all.."

Im guessing one could play on the progression and the std servers at same time if wanted? To get a look at how different they are right now and how they feel..

its hard to find any vids on what are the main differences between those two server types right now, I understand what the progression server is but seeing the comparison in a video would of been best. (not going to happen im sure)

I just want some good old fasion fun :D Remember the white mattikar's ? had such a laugh hunting those with a mate in AC, is that sort of amusement available in EQ ?

You can play on both if you like yes, I know some people that go back & forth.  Like on raid nights on regular servers, they're on regular server raiding with their guild.  But on off nights they play on the progression servers to do things the old way for some nostalgia sake.  You can definitely check out both and see which you prefer.  Buying the latest House of Thule expansion from Amazon or Direct2drive will flag you for all 17 expansions, and it's only $20.  it'll give you the first 30 day free since you don't have an account yet.  It's probably the best deal for you if you want to give it a try.

The gameplay between AC1 and EQ1 are very different.  I think it's important to remember there have been pretty much no games like AC1 released since... AC1.  AC1's combat is unique because it's FPS style, and there are really no pre-determined classes in AC1.   EQ1 however is more like a standard convention MMO, class based, gear based, stats assigned for you kind of MMO.  So the gameplay will be a lot different.  But EQ1 was always the bigger MMO when compared to AC1, much bigger.  And it's probably the only classic originals released in the early days that still gets 1 expansion a year, 1 patch a month, and have a decent sized dev team to support the game.

If you like to solo, you may want to try the original servers.  If you like to group and play with others, the progression servers are where its at for that at the moment.

Remember also that just because there are 17 expansions worth of content, doesnt mean that the older content is actively used. I mean why would you go for a +2 strength sword from expansion 5 when you can get a +5 str +5 dex +5 agil +50 hp sword from expansion 16 :).

Alot of the later expansions ( 15 thru 17 primarliy ) were designed for the high lvl end of the game. The game also got alot easier to move around in ( teleporting to differnt places via clicking on a book landmark) after expansion 4.

I am still a fan of the game though I dont play as much as I would like to due to work and real life.

Damnable real life always getting in the way of my fun.

You will solo A LOT at lower levels on the regular servers, but not necessarily alone. About 2-3 expansions back, they added "mercenaries" that you can hire right from the start. Instant duo-group: just select whether you want a tank, healer or DPS.

    Ok I took the plunge,

Not dissapointed at all, nice amount of stuff in this mmo, just as in the old days with other games. Nice to see less dumbing down of features from the old days, and plenty of stat stuff.. What the heck ever happened to gaming eh?

Anyhow I will get my feet wet on AB and one of the progression servers, Id like to focus on one but not sure yet.. As I have had no experience with the "classic run through" or even the "today's concoction of updates" its another hurdle I have to work out.

    Dude..!  Welcome aboard!

Come to the Vulak time-lock progression server. Because oldschool eq was so phun and untainted, many have dreamed of going back. SOE heard the please of their fans and just released 2 (of many) time-lock servers. That means, this server is only 5 weeks old and many people are still in their teen's, etc.

Come play... you'll enjoy the casual environement and the biginning of Kunark...

Welcome :) Either progression server is good to start on, but i found Fippy to be slightly more populated during the hours that i play. If you get too lost you can always look up ZAM (website) to help ya.

    Enjoy and see ya around.

If you play eq for the first time, I suggest the progression servers because eq is really not a game you just jump into with 17 expansions - It will be overwhelming and you will not learn your class well.. besides most will argue that the first [insert number] expansions were the best. Playing progression will also ensure you get to experience zones and things you would probably never see on a normal server.

One downside is, just about everyone has played eq before and might rush past some things and expect you to just *know* what to do and how - Good thing newbie is not a bad word in eq, say it and people will help and be understanding.

The progression servers overcrowded though, because there are just too little content for max lvl players at this expansion.. eventually it will be the opposite I guess :P

Because the game has changed alot over the years, sources on the net can be inaccurate or faulty, so it can be a good idea to confirm (with a player) if a quest, item drop, spell, recipe etc actually exist and works.
