A guildie pointed me out towards this gem last night. I checked out all the videos I could find on youtube, everything seems amazing. Well, other than combat which kind of looks wow-ish style tab-target combat, and character graphics look slightly outdated, but I honestly don't give a crap about graphics, environment/world looks amazing anyway.
Ship combat, real housing and gardening(?), free for all full loot PVP(?), mobile siege engines, etc. Amazing sandbox, on the paper at least. As a Darkfall player, it got me very interested.
However, I can't help but feel that there are some elements to this game that make it...well, a bad game. For instance, some of the features in Darkfall sound amazing, like villages and trade routes, sound amazing on the paper, but in reality they are horrible mechanics, the whole game sounds super amazing on the paper, but it has some horrible game breaking aspects to it such as grind and the lack of any sort of caps/specializations.
So anyway, my question is, what's bad about this game? What's overhyped? Which sandbox elements are not as sandbox as they seem on paper? Things like that.

Well the 3rd contenient is supposed to be the build castle/keep and have territory control and other buildings around it to actually build cities. Supposed to be able to terraform the terrain a bit so these structures will go most anywhere. Not predesignated plots where you can only do so much with your city and if you want to do mroe you should not have to go take someone elses.
Have heard good things about L2 when it comes to sieges and it should be closer to that then anything darkfall, cause darkfall sieges are a joke. Supposed to have siege windows and stuff so that your not getting ganked while asleep or at work, defenders actually get to defend when they can be on.
Class system is oging to be interesting, especially if they can make 120 unique classes that are actually effective. Instead of having 120 classes and it boil down to 20 or so effective for PvP and such. Starting to prefer the class systems like these where you get to make more choices than just picking a class but hopefully not the macrofest that skill based games turn into.
If I remember correctly it is not supposed to be grind heavy like other titles. Supposedly the gind/leveling stuff has been taken into consideration and it is not supposed to be as bad as L2 or Aion and the leveling in Aion is not bad at all, at least not anymore.
Don't have many drawbacks yet, as I have not gotten tto play the game as of yet. Course I am not overhyped either, I want to be realistic then pleasantly suprised if they are able to deliver a nice polished game with all the features working.
You already mentioned tab targeting and whatnot so not expecting a PvP game to end all PvP games but I am expecting working buildings and territory control and fun PvP. With attempting 120 classes i don't expect there to be any 1 vs 1 balance to pvp, cause that would be simply nuts.
ArcheAge for me is most of the features i look for in an MMO with more freedom to do what I want to do that I have not seen in this type of MMO. Eve Online is massive choices but will be interesting how it translates into this sort of game.
For me everything looks good so far. Now I haven't been able to play the game so I don't know if they are in fact delivering on their promises. Tab targetting and skill based combat doesn't bother me at all, tbh I prefer it. I grew up on turn based RPGs so action style RPGs just make me feel like I'm playing Gauntlet Legends or Dynasty Warriors. Also, according to Jake, the lead developer, this isn't just a sandbox game. There will be a considerable amount of PvE content for people to do, which I love. He likes to say in interviews that it will have the PvP of L2, the amount of PvE as WoW, and a community like UO.
So you'll be able to have a real house, your own ship, build castles and territories with your clan and fight over them, and have a highly customizable character. You can even plant trees and have your spells actually effect the terrain. So basically for me this game is promising everything I've ever wanted in a game besides RvR but I do love clan warfare. So I guess we won't know if anything is overhyped until we can get our hands on the game and start playing it. On a side note, I don't know if there will be full loot or as system similiar to the karma system in L2.
As you already stated this game looks great on paper, and in the videos too, we'll just have to wait and see if they deliver on everything they promised and there aren'y any glaring game breaking issues that we are unable to foresee at this time.
I am pretty sure there won't be full loot pvp, as I read this somewhere, and I am actually happy about that.
Why I would not want to play this game?
Because it has really high system requirements and well yeah, because the developers are from Asia. And there might be a cash shop ruining the game. But I'll at least give it a try... high hopes for it ^^
Simply bcs i may already play another MMORPG that time that has its hooks on me.
Maybe bcs its like SWG full of promising game systems/mechanics but horribly bad executed.
Maybe bcs the world they offer does simply not appeal me, feeling soulless, cold, work instead of fun.
I may give it a try if possible...

Public transport. I hate it.
Nah, urhm.. nothing really, unless it launches in an unfinished state.

Got to agree, this game looks amazing, even though I'm weary of Korean games and their grindage, this game looks like it could be interesting. I'm hoping they release in a finished state, I'm really tires of buying a game that I have to wait two months before they add main features, THAT is ridiculous.
Well, I would think race options. Right now you would have to play a....how can I say....man-girl? Prepubescent boy? A lover of man flesh?
I understand most Asian games make males and females indistiquishable from the neck up. I would not want to play a....tinker bell? type of character. That is me....others have their opinion and I support them! Everyone has what they like and everyone should support others desire for choice!
I prefer something like the Norn or a character from AoC. Im not into looking feminine.....
I am not trying to offend anyone, that is just the way I want my avatar to look. If there is a feral beast, like Char, I would play that over the "softer and gentler" human male.
Because it's a pay to win asian themed game which will probably have close to no lore/story.

Yeah they tend to have that problem. I'm reminded of that Graphics comparison video for SWTOR where they guy comments on how great the females look in AION but the problem was the males looked just as pretty, made my bro and I laugh so hard. For me, I like playing female toons, I don't want to log onto a game and look at the backside of a male for hours on end. Some people think I'm crazy but honestly, I'd rather spend my time watching a female than a male. The men should be manly though, but I think it's a cultural thing in Korea.
Simply because it has magic in it.
I can only answer why 'other' people won't play this game. And the post I quoted is generally the reason why. It's because too many people have had bad experiences with Japanese and Korean developed F2P MMOs. And I have to agree to an extent. Most of them are absolutely terrible, but that doesn't mean any MMO coming out of Korea or Japan is going to be like that. ArcheAge seems like it's geared more towards Western players. From all that I've seen and I've seen surprisingly a lot for a game that still in development, this game has a lot going for it.
The graphics are the first thing. They aren't the most important thing for me, but I hate to say I'm a realism freak or at least a semi-realism freak. I love it when graphics can look realistic. And I know that ArcheAge doesn't look exactly realistic, but they do look realistically stylized.
The next is gameplay. Have you SEEN how the game plays? It's got everything from nautical warfare to building a house and gardening. What's not to like about that?
I would like to see more combat related videos, but what I've seen so far is making me really excited for this game. I think people need to look past their hatred of stereotypical Asian MMOs and see this is going to be one awesome game.
it would be better that they put it on P2P... game looks good but item shop will ruin it
asian grinder with fancy spell effects = bad
You need to do some more research my friend. Because there is lot more to this game other then the fact that it's been developed by an asian company.
illegitimate claims about games based on their origin = bad
Seems to be working for Rift for now
I was under impression that this was going to be subscription game and not an item shop game. Item shop would be a deal breaker for me most likely. I hate wallet warriors.

To be fair, you cannot automatically lump Arche Age in with the rest of the tradionally asian mass produced games.
Jake Song [Song Jae-kyeong (???,???)] who is behind Arche Age and is running the company that started it is a vetran to the mmorpg scene. You can consider him the Richard Garriott of South Korea, and he is behind one of the earliest major successful mmorpgs, Lineage 1 (which came out around the same time as Ultima Online back in the 1990's). Jake Song is the type of developer who goes against the grain when it come to the usual "asian" f2p internet cafe grind "design" philosophy that became popular in his country. Furthermore, it is rare for an asian company to license a major next gen engine such as CryEngine unless they intend for it to be a blockbuster.
I hate to say it but western games right now, probably thanks to the publishers, have stopped trying to innovate and push the boundaries of last generation design. Western mmorpgs seen fine with recycling the same crap over and over without building upon the last generation. In other words, I see very little improvement as of yet. Not to say it will always be that way, but their major offerings to the mmorpg genre are a bit more next gen than anyone elses. It used to be the exact opposite.
The writer for Arche Age is also not an unknown.
As for the OP's point that certain things sound good on paper but not via mechanics. I would have to point out that how a company executes the concept depends on what kind of mechanics you will get. It doesnt mean that if one company did a horrible job designing certain features or just tacked them on, then of course it will be bad, but it doesnt mean that will happen every time with every game. Darkfall should never be compared to Arche Age, purely because Darkfall is like a student film project and Arche Age is more like movie produced by James Cameron. There is a huge gap in quality (in regards to who is developing them and the names involved) between the two.
Why would I not want to play this game.
1) Got zero intrest from the community at G*Star 2010.
2) We know very little about that game.

Because there's two capital letters in it's one word game name.
And don't flame me just bc I have four in my forum name...

Oh, free-to-play / item-shop would be a dealbreaker for me as well. Paying to win is terrible, especially in a game with sandbox qualities.
If they don't go sub-based they'll shoot themselves in the foot as far as I am concerned.
My brand new bloggity blog.
That's funny, because if they go sub-based, I WON'T play.
I don't like pay to win, but that doesn't have to be how cash shops are designed.
Guess we won't see each other in-game then!
what pony sayd
Asian theme manga style cuteness with tiny girls wielding huge swords/spears is a major turnoff for me and the only reason I am hesitant to get this game. It is simply an immersion killer to see something like that.
If I can get over that I dont see a reason not to get it. Unless ofcourse it turns into a Pay to Win title.
