It takes about 100 hours to get to max level, thats a reasonable return on the cost of the game purchase even if you dont continue. As an ex wower, its worth a shout to break you away from wow, but once you hit the end game you will be very very dissapointed. Play rift then wait for archage/guildwars- try out lotr in meantime when you get bored of rift :P
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar
I think its funny that there is even a thred about this when they just had a free weekend. So it would appear that they want you to try it without paying. So OP your arguement is null. Also the reason they won't just offer trial accounts is because of goldselllers.
Who cares if you play or not. Free trials should not be used until such time as the sales determine it's time.
Imagine you purchased a movie ticket and some people were given free passes. You go to get a seat only to find the good ones were taken by the free pass people. You would be pissed. Don't clog up the servers for those who paid.
Now by holding off on a free trial, you will get some impatient folks changing their mind and getting the game instead of waiting. Gamers can be like addicts. Even your post seems like someone who is hooked on gaming.
I think a lot of you aren't getting the point I'm making. I'm calling myself a certain genre of mmo subscriber. By that I mean that every month I have an mmo bill; just like a cable bill, internet bill, ect... Right now I pay that bill to my "provider," Blizzard. Trion does want subscribers like me, because they want to make massive amounts of money. I would argue that an mmo is nothing like a free movie ticket, whereas a movie ends and you've experienced 100% of the content. An mmo should pack enough into professions, classes, ect... to make it so that every time you sit in front of it you have some sort of progression to do. As for being hooked on gaming... that is what being an mmorpg player is all about, and that is what the company wants from you, so I fail to see how that weakens my argument that Rift wants me to subcribe to it.
So the point is, and to use this movie analogy, from Trion's standpoint, they've made their money on release (like a movie that is in theatres), but if they want to make more money, it's time to start selling the dvd at Best Buy, and have them show the movie on their big pretty tv's (free trial).; because where they'll make their money is once a month from guys like me.
As for the free weekend...it's kind of their, but I never even heard about it until last Friday night. So that ship has sailed. I would like the trial to be on my time and longer is part of my point. After all I'm busy playing the mmo I'm paying for every month.

I think you can still get the free trial, or i'm pretty sure another will be along in a minute. I don't think it is time specific, e.g. ends on Sunday night, even though it mentions the weekend. I'm still playing the free trial and it's now Monday, maybe it's got a level cap of 15?
Anyhow i'm enjoying myself with Rift and when it comes to veteran mmorpgs i've played pretty much everything since UO in '97.
I don't think Trion really need's to dare you to do anything. If you can't be bothered to get a copy and give it a go,(30 days free btw) or watch out for the beta and the trial weekend, then really thats your own fault not Trions.
They've been more then accomodating with trying to get people into the game, if you've missed those events then..oh I don't know...take a risk...and buy it!! I know it sounds crazy, but hey thats just me!! :P
I do wonder where this entitlement complex comes from...
Well thanks everyone for the feedback. It's interesting that not as many mmo players have the same mindset as me. I posted this because I figured there would be more players that would agree with this. I guess my issue will still go unheard with companies. I'm hard to please when it comes to games, and until the day where it's a staple of gaming companies for you to click on their official website and be welcomed with open arms by that company to play now without even the slightest iota of complications, I'll be happy with Blizzard. Riot has the right idea with where games should be going with that initial welcoming, lets just hope that in the future I won't have to wait around. The world is a fast moving place after all, and Rift had me, but they lost me. They could have picked me up, but without flashing lights and bells and whistles yanking me into the door, I'm moving by. I'm think Guild Wars 2 might need a look see...haven't played my ritualist for quite some time.
What you want doesn't typically happen in normal MMO'd releases. It's rare when a company would offer a free trial to their game only a month and half after release. The fact they offered two free weekends is incredibly rare. Sorry but I feel if you can't be bothered to sign up for a free weekend after the game has only been out for a relatively short time then you'll just have to wait. I'm sure Trion will be ok either way.

How did the OP manage to play Guild Wars from 2002 to 2005, when the game was released in 2005?
If you like (still) like WoW you'll like rift.
If you're bored of WoW you'll like rift until you get to max level. Because after that. It's basically WoW.
So yeah. If you like WoW. Get rift. If you're fed up of the same endgame shit gear grind, go get drunk instead.
WoW nerds beware, I come equipped with lazers and anti-QQ missiles. If you mess with me, I will $%£@ you.
Please continue the topic without any more comments on the Guild Wars error or other attacks on the OP.

if you were an wow player, you should like rift. After all rift's ads says 'we are not in azeroth anymore', or whatever.
