Bully-ing in school is a huge issue right now in america, and I think bully-ing in general is a huge issue. Whether at school, the workplace, the bar, or online, it needs to stop. People putting others down to self-empower/satisfy themselves is pathetic.
Bullying is nothing new, its happened for ages... difference between now and the past is...
1. Bullying leads to suicide, extremely high amount of emotionally frial people out there
2. Bullying leads to violence with weapons rather than a old school fist fight.
that old sticks and stones line, isn't really said anymore
more like "sticks and stones may break my bones, words may cause me to kill myself"
sad really, that people are so weak
It's also that the Internet and political correctness are distorting the solution.
I was bullied as a kid, so what? If you've ever known a kid or a person in general, you know they'll do what they want if the excitement, in their opinion, outweighs the repercussions.
I was bullied too, I delt with it
they wanna make kids who pick on other kids into criminals, its too much.. people need to grow some stones
now in instances like an adult parent fucking with a kid, thats a bit much...but that woman that did that and the girl killed herself is hardly at fault for the girls suicide.
I was bullied as a kid as well, but it's a lot different today than it used to be.
For me, at least when I left school, any bullying that happened was left there.
These days, kid's social lives are highly integrated with the Internet. Bullying that happens at school, gets carried over onto the Internet. Bullies harassing others over Facebook, IMs, Email, etc, to the point where some kids feel like they're being bullied every waking moment, and 'nowhere' is safe from harassment.
Bullying is never an okay thing to happen. It was't ten years ago, and it still isn't today. It's far worse today because bullies can take things to a much more intense level of harassment.
That's another thing that I even saw happening just as I was finishing with high school. You used to be able to knock out their teeth for starting shit with little to no consequence aside from maybe a punsihment from your parents. Now they kick you out of school and all kinds of BS.
removing anonymity is the most near-sighted suggestion anyone could have about solving this sort of social problem. Its about as bad of a solution as a person could come up with, and the mere suggestion of it is irrational. I hope the OP is just trolling because if not they are seriously missing out on common sense.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
No. Anonimity is the last bastion for escapism, barring a holiday to a beautiful island or taking drugs.
True it breeds horrid conversations and topics, but that is the nature of the internet and we take it part and parcel.
Pretty much all the important topics against this idea has been covered in this thread and i agree thoroughly.
Yes it will make females a target for creeps and hormonal adolecents.
Yes it will lower job prospects for older gamers who are professionals in real life.
Yes it will make it easier for sexual deviants to target children in MMO games.
Yes it will make it easier for professional scammers and hackers to phish for details.
And yes, it will make cyberbullying a commonplace occurance.
Just to throw in my 2¢, cyberbullying is the foremost of my concern. There is already enough bullying in schools enough as it is. The last thing i want is to worry about is that my children can be followed after school hours and be bullied on their free time.
Tying the internet to real life is bound to be a bad experience. Just like a date from a online dating service.
Activision Blizzard's Real ID™ was not dropped. Its being used in starcraft 2, and thats just the start.
Once a major company like Activision Blizzard gets the ball rolling, other companies will fall in line. Opening revenue like no gaming company has ever seen before. Tie your facebook to WoW? Yes Please. More targeted ad's to sell.
Hmm, we see that you also play Call of Duty: Black ops™, maybe this game will intrest you..
In the end, gaming companies that push these inconceivable notions that you WANT to expose youself to more harrassment, whether it be from REAL grevious bodily harm from that psychopath you met online or more ads custom tailored to your preferences, they only care about their bottom line. Not your safety.
However, there should be no anonymity between a player's online identities. If someone is an idiot on a game's forum or in the game, I should be able to know who all of that person's characters are. Likewise if I ignore one of their characters, it should ignore all of their characters.
Well, I'd say that the most important thing is that the service host be able to know which virtual identities are the same person. If a player is doing something the host doesn't like then it can take actions against that person within their service. Players should have essentially no knowledge of other players' virtual identities. If a player has a problem with another player's actions, he reports them to the service host. The service host can then take actions against the player.
Note that the service host wouldn't know the actual identity of their customers. If they have a problem with a customer that extends to the real world, they turn to the real world authorities such as the police. The police know the actual identity of any given virtual identity and can act against them as necessary.
So being a jerk or an otherwise bad customer gets you banned from a service. Breaking a law gets you a visit from the police.
I'm a big fan of this style of anonymity.
Note that there's nothing requiring a service from working with the real identity of a person. The current system of creating an unbound virtual identity can still be used by services such as police hotlines, government criticisms, etc. Places where people don't want to be traced by the real world authorities and service hosts respect that desire.
Hmm...I was bullied in shool. But then again 2nd day in a new school and wearing the girls uniform as a reason to not cut my hair will make you an enemy out of everyone...
But yah o.o cyberbullying is a lot worse than getting pulled to the bathroom n get beat up by grous of ppl o.O especially since most people to have a bajillion friends they dont know on social media sites.
"hi may i add u?"
"sure!"
"k thanks!"
o.O then they feel popular then one friend starts spreading rumors and then it splodes to a giant cluster!@#$
Wow that reminds me of how popular people in high school were! o.O

Anonymity is a very very good thing. The only people who'd be looking up other people their real adresses and phone numbers are exactly the guys naming themselves "XxXuberpwngodXxX".
What I would like to see are account-linked family names. When you create an account you have to pick a name for that account. Any characters you create in the game share that name as their surname. So you can't be a dick on an alt and then expect your main to get away from it.
If I was an being an ass, I would definitely not hide behind my other chars. I will do it on my main and I won't give a damn about it. Who cares if other people think I am a dick? I sure as hell don't
Of course, sticking my real name in a game is NEVER gonna happen.
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.
The MMO companies would love this. They want the real you to be named as it makes their game more like a social network. And the MMO industry has decided that tying your game into social networks is as important as making a better MMO. This was why WoW tried to get its forums to use real names, forums may not be a social network, but once you have real names you are half way there.
Anonymity is a very very good thing. The only people who'd be looking up other people their real adresses and phone numbers are exactly the guys naming themselves "XxXuberpwngodXxX".

I agree with this. I dont see much point in exposing RL names but linking all your characters to your account, and even multiple accounts if you have more than one, would be a great way to expose the dicks out there.
It just gives companies a better shot at selling your name out to advertising companies.
Nothing is stopping people from posting real information. But forcing it is stupid. Peoples right on what they want to put out their information wise. Who said you have to like what people post or put on the internet? So easy to sit their and complain about others information. But take a good look at yourself before you start talking about invading others privacy. If your all for this why don't all of you post your full information for others to look at.
Besides over 90% of the people on the internet just talk shit. No one ever wastes time, money, gas, plane flights, and just to go see someone in RL because boohoo someone said something I no like. Stop being a moron and realistic. You have to be insane to live in the video game world so much your substituting it as if it was your RL. Are your lives so shitty you have to cower in videos and make stupid topics about forcing others to be like you or else they are wrong? Don't be so fuck.
When did you start playing "old school" MMO's. World Of Warcraft?
Anonymity isn't the problem actually, the problem is that there's no consequences in most of the games for what you're doing.
In games where you need alot of time to develop your character most people actually don't behave like a**hats, because they don't wanna risk loosing their credibility or whatever you wanna call it.
If you've spend a year or two to train up a character in EvE Online, you sure don't want to risk being marked as a traitor, scammer or dishonourable player as this will probably lead to harsh drawbacks, like not getting accepted into corps/alliances anymore, or everyone trying to kill you as often as possible etc.
With all those disposable charcaters, that you can train up to max-level and equip with all epics in less then three month (yes I can do that in most MMOs easily in that amount of time) there's no second thought about ruining the reputation of my character, as I simply make a new one.
There's a few games where all your characters are tied to your account by adding a handle or surname, which works well to reduce the bad behaviour aswell, but creating a new account isn't that expensive either in most games, so you still got options to be an a**hat.
Nevertheless, having to play with your real-name is probably the worst idea I've ever heard of, and stuff like battle.net is allready going too far imho. Bad things do happen sometimes, if people are known by their real names and adresses and we sure don#t want that.
Yeah no way would I go for this. It's not just the kids not caring about being asshats or adults caring if their employeers find out their gamers. It's also for those of us who have families.
Last thing I want is some pedophile checking up on every character he runs into seeing if they have a myspace or facebook, finding out they're a local or close by enough and seeing its a kid or that person has kids(like myself) or just some cool expensive swag in the background of a pic for the thiefs out there. Yes yes, don't post those kinds of pics or join social networks. And all can already be looked for by those types of people by going directly to those sites first. Blah blah blah. The fact is that we don't need to open the door even more for disgruntled gamers who tend to get carried away over things that happen to them in a video game. A simple thing like ganking a kill or getting someone killed has been known to cause people to go into absolute fits of rage.
Let me try this from another angle. Do you want games to provide the ability to do things like:
1. Allow a guild leader to ban a person from their guild.
2. Find out if a person has a character in your guild/faction and also an enemy guild/faction. Spy detection.
To make these things happen requires a certain loss of anonymity. Somebody has to know your actual identity if the necessary checks are going to be made. Mind you, these identities would be opaque things to the typical player. As a guild leader, you'd literally be able to ban a player or find out which players in your guild are also in a warring guild. But that's it; you couldn't see their names, find out other characters that they have, etc.
The difficult part is establishing someone's identity, and that's a whole separate can of worms. I assume that internet identities issued by national governments (like passports) will be pretty much the only way to even get close to a working system. Even then there will be people with multiple identities, people who borrow or even steal identities, etc.
But ultimately, the country where you are a citizen would issue the identity and they would have all your identity information. A game company wouldn't be able to see your identity information, only that you are identity XYZ. If they ban XYZ then any time they see XYZ trying to log into their game, they'd disallow it.
For the identity-paranoid, there's no reason that a service on the internet needs to require your identity. It's entirely possible to continue to operate as we do today. That's particularly true for services that implicitly assume that the authorities are the problem. So a web site devoted to ranting about government incompetence wouldn't require your internet identity. A crime reporting service needn't require your identity. If you're reporting police corruption, you sure don't want to do the electronic equivalent of walking into a police station, pointing a finger at a cop and saying "He's taking drug money."
So internet identities would be an option for services on the internet. If somebody comes out with a service that requires identities and people don't like that, they can choose to not use that service. It would become a point of competition because identities allow for certain features to be implemented in a service.
I really don't think people playing with their real names would care all that much either. Chances are you're not going to run into somone who ninja looted you in real life anyways.
The better way to keep people from NL is one character per server. If the guy gets a bad reputation and can't play a different character without starting over. So either they will not act like a jerk or if they enjoy it stil be a jerk but play solo because nobody wants to group up with them.
What a nightmare of an idea. I will never play a game that does this. Kind of people you meet online and to think they might get your address and other details is truly beyond scary.
I would not go to suggest it is good to reveal people's real name in game so you can track them down and give them a beating.
On the other hand i would be all for it for stronger rules wich would imply a ban in short term when you act like shit.
We are all playing those game for the fun of a persistant world full of people to group with and have fun, those people acting bad in game should learn that there is consequences to the way they act. In a way, what i am hoping for is a system that would make the little pwnsauce_01 to figure out : If i aint being nice, im gonna be in trouble, and maybe get banned. Don't tell me it's already the case tho, i had multiple conversation with GM about a guy being a uberpwnsauce_01 douche and being really offensive on chat, without nothing happening.

you have a fail argument, a spy can and will if is was the case use his mother name, bro, GF, whatever else to make the account in a way he can't be find out, and to ban someone from the guild is not difficult, first use vent/TS second make ia requirement to joi n your guild, ok done.
and you still lack one thing, your said internet services would be abused, the same way you don't use your id to go to any shop or walk in the street it also prevent you from being harassed and margeting annoying you to buy things you never will use or even care. plus its fact criminals use all the social medias to get hwat they want, be it by stealing your Credti card or getting info of who you are and what you do, so they can kidnap you or someone from your family and ask a ransom.
but also remember, evenif they did one part have the id the other no will happen to start to create a lot more problems because then they will start to enforce things for people who don't want his id in the internet with teh thinking, if he don't want his id on the internet he is up to no good so let's limit his access or limit his contact with other people forcing people do things they don't want,
you and anyone who want the have you ture id on the internet are just thinking on you and have short sigted on what can happen or don't gasp the number of problems, like I said the same way I walk in the street without having to show my id to every single one, why i should want do that on the internet?
its quite simple really.. any game that tries to take away a players anonymity.. will be doomed to lose its players.. the only ones you'd have left would be those whose childish behaviour the OP is most likely complaining about... there are good ideas.. and there are bad ideas.. but this one.. is way beyond bad.. for an MMO company.. its tantamount to suicide..

Stronger rules and more responsability.
No just no. Who are you going to decide what is "nice"? You?
If someone is offensive in chat, that is what the "ignore" button is for. And who says we need to be "nice" all the game just to play a GAME?
If i want to rage quit, i will rage quit and eat that 30 min dungeon finder cool-down.
Pretty much worst idea ever. Bullies at school or in other public arena's arent deterred by the fact that their identities are public. THis wont stop them here. Moreover, it will give ample opportunities for said bullies to take their bastardliness one step further by harassing other players' RL identities. I sympathize with the frustration that come with most MMO communities, but this is no solution at all.
And notice i was talking about relationship on chat, not because you decided to quit on people.
you also know gms will not keep looking on chats all day and in the end you can block then anyway? block is your friend.
also you can curse him in a way he will not get it or not fully understand, I do it with annoying people when i'm in the mood to annoy then, because its easy, and a lot of the time he get lost.
what i can notice here is you are or too lazy to even use block, or really think people will change if they have they name marked on the screen, that will not goona happen and it will only make you a target. be it by ciminals or be it by corporations wnating to sell you things, plus if you want your name be market so much then go and use facebook and orkut and all that crap social media and leave the rest of the internet alone.

I like to just report the same person until the get a perma-ban. Just FYI most mmos use a 3 strikes with in a set amount of time and your out kind of system. So you report the guy GM tells them off the idiot gets pissed and sends you more tells report again. Rinse and repeat until they are no more. Much better than blisting.

Stronger rules and more responsability.
you have a fail argument, a spy can and will if is was the case use his mother name, bro, GF, whatever else to make the account in a way he can't be find out, and to ban someone from the guild is not difficult, first use vent/TS second make ia requirement to joi n your guild, ok done.
and you still lack one thing, your said internet services would be abused, the same way you don't use your id to go to any shop or walk in the street it also prevent you from being harassed and margeting annoying you to buy things you never will use or even care. plus its fact criminals use all the social medias to get hwat they want, be it by stealing your Credti card or getting info of who you are and what you do, so they can kidnap you or someone from your family and ask a ransom.
but also remember, evenif they did one part have the id the other no will happen to start to create a lot more problems because then they will start to enforce things for people who don't want his id in the internet with teh thinking, if he don't want his id on the internet he is up to no good so let's limit his access or limit his contact with other people forcing people do things they don't want,
you and anyone who want the have you ture id on the internet are just thinking on you and have short sigted on what can happen or don't gasp the number of problems, like I said the same way I walk in the street without having to show my id to every single one, why i should want do that on the internet?
its quite simple really.. any game that tries to take away a players anonymity.. will be doomed to lose its players.. the only ones you'd have left would be those whose childish behaviour the OP is most likely complaining about... there are good ideas.. and there are bad ideas.. but this one.. is way beyond bad.. for an MMO company.. its tantamount to suicide..
No just no. Who are you going to decide what is "nice"? You?
If someone is offensive in chat, that is what the "ignore" button is for. And who says we need to be "nice" all the game just to play a GAME?
If i want to rage quit, i will rage quit and eat that 30 min dungeon finder cool-down.
Yes yes yes and again yes, you dont have to be an ape to know that saying your mom is a full piece of ??$#%#@$%6 with a big ?@%?@#$?5 IS NOT NICE.
I mean what kind of answer was that, they are in normal life unappropriate behavior wich can lead you to get problems with justices, same in game.
And notice i was talking about relationship on chat, not because you decided to quit on people.
Pretty much worst idea ever. Bullies at school or in other public arena's arent deterred by the fact that their identities are public. THis wont stop them here. Moreover, it will give ample opportunities for said bullies to take their bastardliness one step further by harassing other players' RL identities. I sympathize with the frustration that come with most MMO communities, but this is no solution at all.
you also know gms will not keep looking on chats all day and in the end you can block then anyway? block is your friend.
also you can curse him in a way he will not get it or not fully understand, I do it with annoying people when i'm in the mood to annoy then, because its easy, and a lot of the time he get lost.
what i can notice here is you are or too lazy to even use block, or really think people will change if they have they name marked on the screen, that will not goona happen and it will only make you a target. be it by ciminals or be it by corporations wnating to sell you things, plus if you want your name be market so much then go and use facebook and orkut and all that crap social media and leave the rest of the internet alone.
My theme song.
