A non-MMO mmorpg?

Imagine if you took one of your favorite non-mmorpg games that WEREN'T AN RPG, and implemented RPG aspects to it. What would you think of this?

For instance, a MMORPG based on the Left 4 Dead series, where the main point in that game is to survive vs zombies (including PvP).

The gameplay in these examples is irrelevant. It can be FPS MMORPG or retain the gameplay style, or it can be a real time turn based rpg gameplay type of MMORPG in replace of the FPS style of the FPS game (or in replace of RTS or sidescroller, whatever genre your choice is.)

Regardless, the objectives are the same-- the gameplay similar (even if the way to implement combat is changed or kept) and there are added features of permanence (stats, levels, items, and a bigger world).

Ex. a Left4Dead version of a MMORPG might be a real-time turn based modern combat (Neocron, Anarchy Online, or Darkfall with weapons, etc.) with the quests being the "Survive through the area!" type of quest, but within a world. Instanced or not, it is up to your imagination.

This is NOT as simple as "Make your game, MMO!" But instead, adding tons of MMO type of features, and merely making the quests or dungeons very similar in style or theme (perhaps even gameplay) to that game.

Another example would be a "Zombies Ate my Neighbors!" MMORPG. Very similar to the real SNES/SEGA game, but modernized, 2011 gameplay and graphics, and 90% more content based entirely on making it more of a MMO and more of a RPG and less of a sidescroller game.

For ex. Call of Duty or Battlefield series, where you unlocked weapons as you advanced. This is like adding 1% of the features of MMO persistence into another game. I am talking about adding another 89%. However, honestly, it is all up to you.

Tell us what you'd like to see, and WHY you think it would be FUN!

If being a developer means being quiet, mature, well-spoken, and disconnected from the community, then by all means do me a favor and believe I'm not one.

Call of duty is a pretty good example to use.  for me, I would take Call of duty and add a seamless world, progression through levels/ranks, each level/rank gaining access to certain guns etc.  It's not that far fetched really, just remove the arena based aspect of the current CoD games and make it so you can move about a seamless world.  Obviously it would be PVP focused, I don't think I would even make PVE a factor to be honest.  full out MMO-FPS, seamless world, with tons of progression options, and that's just to start.

Could even have crafting of a sort, where you find scrap or you can salvage or forage and make food, ammo, traps, etc.  Also make a Blackmarket like Auction House for player economy.

honestly, I'd prefer to see the inverse.

How do I add more of those single player elements that are really enjoyable to the MMO universe.  And that's not to say that I perfer single player games, I just feel that the MMO systems that are currently popular are dated and boring.

Using a keyboard and mouse in a point and click MMO just makes me feel detached from my character.  Why can't there be more incentive to use game pads with vibration to make me feel more like I am that character.  My movements are mimiced by my character's and I feel when my character is under stress.

Another great element of single player games is really making the world appear as I have been there.  Phasing is one way to do it albeit completely lacking in personal flavor.  I want to have structures or something that shows that "I" have been there.  What about a mechanic that allows me to purchase buildings and adorn it with my guild crest.  Put some ownership in this world.

As it stands in most MMOs, technology has increased, but immersion has not.  I want to have more of an attachment to my character, I want to know that he/she is making an impact.  Quests are ridiculous, I want an NPC to see me and yell, HEY I NEED YOUR HELP!  I want to come accross events instead of quests.  The world feels dead with quests and hubs.  I want to create the hubs and I want to stumble upon opportunities to make my character involved with the world.

MMOs played: Horizons, Auto Assault, Ryzom, EVE, WAR, WoW, EQ2, LotRO, GW, DAoC, Aion, Requiem, Atlantica, DDO, Allods, Earth Eternal, Fallen Earth, Rift

One of my ultimate dream games would be a football (american) MMO. You start off as a kid in pee-wee, eventually leveling up to endgame... becoming an NFL player. There would be loot and everything. OMG Epic Jock Strap of Anti-Itch dropped off this raid QB we just sacked!
