I've been hanging around these forums for years and you guys are the cream cheese of the MMORPG world so I would like to ask your opinion....
For GW2 I'm starting my own guild. I've ran small guilds before and usually rise to officer level in most other guilds I join. Now with the whole WvWvW thing, and gear with any look you want, I'm thinking that it is possible to make a guild really stand out visually, without relying on the usual cloaks.
For example, you could get everyone in guild to wear a certain style of gear that matches across the classes and perhaps with colouring create a distinctive look and feel that other players can easily recognise. Now with the guild restricted to one or two races, that visual image could be quite striking and distinctive.
So my question to you is
1) How hard will it be to recruit to a guild restricted to just one or two races? And if you'd join, what one or two races would you prefer.
2) Will players hate a restrictive dress and colour code or will they love the image and the realm/guild pride that goes with WvWvW ?
I know I'd love to make such a guild, I'm just worried people won't like the restrictive ideas. Your thoughts gratrefully received!
Comments
1) Well according to a thread over at guildwars2guru Sylvari and Asura will be a minority (although that could because we haven't had Asura and Sylvari week yet) so recruiting from them might be harder, otherwise it should be fine.
2) Personally I wouldn't like the restriction, I want to wear what I want to wear not what fits my guild.
While you are recruiting make it very obvious of your intention and your requirements for the guild.
Do you plan on this being a social or hardcore raiding guild? If you plan on making this a hardcore raiding guild, putting limitations on your players might not be the best idea. A raiding guild wants the best players no matter the character race.

1) It depends on the race. If you had to choose one I would pick from either Charr, Norn, or Human as those seem to be the most popular (at this point).
2) It depends on the player and how close-knit your guild is. I know my original GW guild that if they decided on a color code or something then I would be more than happy to go about it, as I loved that guild (as long as it wasn't something such as hot-pink) but to make it an easier choice, maybe make the colors something dark, maybe a dark blue/green or even black, and supply dyes to the members if they need it.

I see why you ask. I plan on focusing on WvW primarily, on a regular basis, but perhaps just shy of hardcore. The guild would probably have a name like {server name} Defenders or something.
ANET hasnt release any info yet abt guild structures but one of the things they talked abt is the ability for individual characters in 1 account to belong to diff guilds if the owner wants it so; it wouldnt be hard recruiting since guild membership is not account-based anymore
i think that your 1-race guild is a viable option for RP reasons, esp the strong feelings of the community about humans vs charr conflict
dress code / color code can be challenging to enforce cuz of the extreme amount of color customization available and players will want to take advantage of that
if youve played GW1 you'd know that players spend lots of gold and lots of time mixing dyes to get that perfect color for their armor
but if you decide to go thru with it, go pink

1. It shouldn't be too hard to recruit specific races, if said race is either: Charr, Norn or Human. However I wouldn't surprised if your guild would be perceived as racist... in-game.
2. I think it's best that your Guild starts off as a tight-nit group, with your matching dye colour-schemes and as you develop a repuation for yourselves; you'll get people wanting to join.
I'd say that you can do whateveer you want in regards to your guild because it's your guild and not an official part of the game, so if people want to create guilds which support all the races (a la Destiny's Edge, which I will continue to mix up with Divinity's Reach, thus calling the city Destiny's Reach, which I must stop doing) then they can do that, too. The idea is that you can play the game the way you want so long as it doesn't negatively impact other people, that's why the game is being designed from the ground up to... *flips through thesaurus.* precipitate the feeling of camaraderie, so you won't want to harm your fellow player.
Examples of this are:
You can't steal a resource node. (They're instanced to players, separately.)
You can't steal loot. (Everyone who participates in a dynamic event or dungeon gets the same rewards.)
You can't steal objectives. (If someone enters into a dynamic event, they can only help you out.)
There is no official support for race vs race combat.
The lore encourages players of all races to work together in defence of their world/realm in PvE/PvP.
But that doesn't stop you from roleplaying whatever you want, because like I said, it's up to you what you want to do. I mean, one could create a guild about an ethical society for the charr if they wanted, or an asura movement for open source magicks, it's really up to the players what they want to do with their guilds, because guilds, like out of character players themselves, are very detachedf rom the game world. Though you may find after playing the game for a bit that you won't even want a guild restricted to one or two races.
But if you do desire that, go for it!
It doesn't make much sense for a guild to restrict characters by race unless you're going to be a roleplaying guild.
"Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." -Dr. Seuss
A singe race guild would be easy to recruit for, and makes perfect sense with the lore. More sense than multi-race guilds.
It is hard to keep single race if the game doesn't support it.
I've led a couple of RP guilds and initially limited to a specific class or race but we always ended up loosening the reigns to allow for a limited few of 'others' fairly soon. You will most likely make friends, or get to deal with friends of friends who really want to join but rolled another race and don't fancy rerolling.
If you are an RP guild you could devise reasons to have other races in your ranks: slaves / spies / renegades, etc. That worked very well for us to explain the small 'outsider part' of the guild. Also it adds more story / meaning / background to RP with: in general those people were glad to be 'special'

Tell that to The Vigil.
Or the Order of Whispers or the Durmand Priory or Destiny's Edge or the whole of Lion's Arch for that matter.

An army of the races that are joined together for the cause of defeating the elder dragons makes no sense to you?
1. It shouldnt be too hard but may not last in end game. Im not sure on the race thing, i havent really studied the game, the more i read about a game i cant play the more it drives me crazy (Tera, Firefall).
2. I love the idea of wearing the same outfit and stuff to set yourselves apart and really show your team colors and all that.
Overall i just never see these ideas being successful in a non casual manner. GW2 is obviously supposed to not being doing the trinity thing but i dunno how well that will actually work out so im not sure that a guild like this would fare well in end game.
Its a very cool fun thing for role players but very limiting when you want to play the game. Youd have more of a hard time finding dedicated members than just random members that will come and go.
I love your ideas and hope it works out for you.
I actually thought about the costume thing in DCUO, ive seen league members dress up in the same outfit and its funny and great.

A single race guild would not be hard at all, plenty of games have them, Restricting armor/cloth /color style however will kill it.
People love thier characters and like them to their vission, not yours.
I see no problems yet whit gameplay issue's when doing stuff whit a single race only highly doubt their be any content that requires a Charr to be in your party or else you cant do it. that would be very bad game design.
It's like the US supporting the Iraqi's in the 80's... They had a common enemy with Iran, but that never made them friends or true allies.

Getting people with etnical or religious backgrounds work together is currently the most impossible quest on our own world....
Why woul any charr ever cooperate With a human wliingly?

Seems like they already are. Have you read GoA yet?
Because above all the Charr are pragmatic. They realize they can't beat the Elder Dragons by themselves, especially not because at the same time the Charr are struggling with the Flame Legion, ogres and ghosts.
Yes, I've read it. Some of them do get along when forced to, but the hate is, and always will be, there.
Even if they do try to write it into the storyline, that doesn't mean that it makes any logical sense.
I think you're just not getting it. The leader of the vigil is a charr. She doesn't seem to have any problem cooperating with other races, she actually seems to be encouraging it. It also seems that the Imperator if the Iron Legion wants to cooperate with the humans too.
I think that you just refuse to get it. The cooperation is not widespread, and it is only conditional. It is not a peacy treaty, and it is not an alliance. It is simply an agreement to cooperate against a common enemy and then kill each other later.
In this context, it makes perfect sense to have guilds of a single race that will, when it benefits them, cooperate with those of another race.
i like the idea.
personally ill play norn character so for me it would logical to join norn guild.
no not because im norn, but in mixed guild there would loads of charr and i hate those since the first game lol.
colors is a nice idea, but personally i think it shouldnt be too strict.
it wouldnt look realistic unless you intend the guild to be some kind of army.
maybe some kind of color pattern which players could suit to their liking or... some kind of single major color and single other color as an accesory. that would work and definitely unite the appearance of the whole group.
also the racism question... well there wouldnt be such term if racism was never a problem in the real world.
so in the game world if there is no racism at all id say thats pretty unrealistic.
if anyone read or played The Witcher... thats why its so much more realistic than Lord of the Rings. its a realistic fantasy world and its much easier to get immersed in such.
in game racism would harm nobody, would only make it what it should be - RPG. most fantasy games follow such scenario anyway. from warcraft to warhammer to starcraft etc...
Smodur seems to want a peace treaty.
"Smodur is a consummate engineer and a brilliant architect and designer. Over the years, he has been responsible for many advancements that have increased the Iron Legion’s strength. The imperator considers his legion to be the most “forward thinking” of all charr. Due to Smodur’s unusually progressive nature, other races are allowed in the Black Citadel as long as they prove their worth to the charr. Smodur is even working on a treaty with the humans defending the stronghold of Ebonhawke—a place that has long been a thorn in the Iron Legion’s side."

Sounds like he just wants an end to some useless fighting to me. Like I said, it sounds like you are just not getting it, or like are refusing to get it.
