Hey everyone,

I played this before a LONG time ago back in high school, but I was at the height of my WoW experience and felt it was too slow, though I didn't dislike anything about it other than that.

Not going to lie, Dissidia:Final Fantasy (don't hurt me) is one my favorite games and as soon as I unlocked Shantotto (and in the sequel, Prishe) she became one of my new favorite characters.

I had to play the game where she was from, and see just how awesome she actually was.

So I looked up FFXI prices and lo and behold FFXI and all of it's expansions were 9.99 on Steam, so I said 'Why not?'

Just a few questions.

1) Is there a way to increase the display resolution?

I fiddled around in the menus and found an aspect ratio slider, but is there a way to set the game to like 1300xwahtever?

Also, I spent a long time trying to figure out the Menus and the UI haha, it was very frustrating at first but I stuck with it.

There really wasn't any sort of tutorial or direction or anything. I started the game (I'm a black mage Hume in Windurst, on Leviathan world I think?) and this cute little tarutaru walks up and extablished that thigns weren't all sunshine and rainbows and adventureres were needed. His friend came up and explained where the shops were, and then they told me to go talk to this weird robot thing named Jack. I thought he'd lead me somewhere, but he ... didn't?

I really had no idea what I was supposed to be doing or where to go, so I wandered around Windurst looking for the exit so I could go kill some monsters, and wouldn't you know it, I came upon Shantotto's mansion! I was so excited, I went in and she gave me a quest!! I don't know where to get bone ash or bombs, but I won't let her down!

After some more exploring, I found the entrance to West Sarutabruta (?) and a got a mission to go to some ruins to help the Orastery (?). There was also a book outside that gave me a training regime, and I levelled to three before I had to get to bed.

2) Are there any tips or explanations I should know about, or anything helpful you can tell a brand new player like me?

I am a bit of an MMO junkie and I have tried A LOT of mmos. Normally, with a game like this, I would have quit within 5 minutes of realizing there was no tutorial, and the UI was so vastly different I coud never solve it.

Actually, for some reason, the fact that I know absolutely nothing about how to play this game gave me that feeling of when I first played World of Warcraft, or my first MMO. The mystery and mystique of exploring a new world, where the potential is endless and it's not the 'same old same old.' I feel green and new in this place, and am excited to feel this way again!!!

    - Yes, Go to http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Graphics <- Will explain everything.

The above link should help explain everything

You basically are now on your own. You can start to level/craft/quest/whatever you desire.

The wiki link above has really good information on quests and missions. (there is a difference) Use it and things will be a lot more clear.

Pay attention to what people tell you, look at wiki for most quest/mission info. At level 18 you'll be able to do the sub job quest. At 30 you'll have the option of advanced job quests.

Congratulations^^ that feeling that you feel now is what most of us old players experienced so long ago.

I'd say try to find a linkshell, a social one. People will help you out. Being new a lot of players will try to help you.

    What server are you on?

To increase the display resolution, you need to open FFXI config in the folder you installed FFXI to. It is an external graphics setting program. However, if you are playing on a PC (which I assume you are) consider getting Windower from www.windower.net

Once you figure it out (read the guides) you can set the game to fantastic settings the configure program that came with FFXI can't attain.

    Not this high though

    Anyways, regarding your second question.

First, check http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org for a ton of info and tutorials

-Computer specs no one cares about: check.

-MMOs played no one cares about: check.

-Xfire stats no one cares about: check.

-Signature no one cares about: check.

    ------------------------------------------------------------
    -Narcissism: check.

Nope.  FFXIV is currently free and you need to do is buy the game.  FFXI however still has a monthly sub that gets pulled at the stupidest time every month instead of when actually want to be charged, like the day you sub.  Account management idiocy and controls from hell, aside, FFXI is one of my favorite MMORPGs of all time.  So much content it will feel overwhelming.  I would play it again if it wasn't such a pain to resub and relearn the stupid control/macro system.

No I do not believe so.  I bought the game maybe a little less than two months ago and it had a sub then.  I did not stick around past the first month, as no matter what I do I cannot get past the horrid controls, but I had to sign up for a subscription.

Much much easier to play for most people (myself included) if you use a controller. You do get used to the controls, it's not to say it's "horrid" it's just different.

You have no idea how happy that sentence makes me.

You basically are now on your own.

I can go do whatever I WANT!?! Ridiculous!! I don't have to follow a predetermined quest rail that every other character will experience in the exact same unchanging way?? ::cough RIFT cough::

But seriously, I am at work right now and I am soooo excited to get back home and start doing whatever I want!

Also, I am more than positive I am on the Leviathan server. But not 100%.

Thanks everyone for your responses, they are super helpful! One of the one thigns I had loved about ffxi when I tried it all those years ago was always the community. In the single day I played it, I was given advice, helped by people who had asked for nothing in return and actually given gear and money!!! No other MMO community has compared. :P

FFXI isn't free, because of the fail that is FFXIV the game is practically like Guild Wars in the respect you play for box and pay for free til the PS3 launch(by then most fixes/content updates and new jobs will be added). Its $12.95 a month, getting in the game is a lot easier since exp in 1-75 areas were increased my 100% and Field of Valor is kind of a quest system but you dont have to really do it (wiki it for more information). Tools i recommend using for FFXI based questions would be the official forums (yes after 8+ years SE decided to have their own forums). Id recommend FFXIAH for just the auctions but not so much the forums becuase its troll or be trolled on there T____T. But MMORPG does have some nice and helpful FFXI vets that can also get you on your feet. Im sure the L/s leader will post here from eldritch eponym i think they were called? Amazing social/newbie help l/s.

Everything else about the game can be found out on ffxiclopedia as far as guides/quests/missions/gear e.t.c While there is a lot of content to go through they did remove the level caps for Chains of Promathia and most Mission lines due to many ppl not doing them anymore and now can be soloed/duoed by over leveling the content or of course asking for help. Its much easier to reach the endgame now than ever, some may think they are making ffxi easymode due to it taking little to 2 weeks to reach old level cap. However, the games moved so far forward over the past year that it would of been discouraging to new/old returning players (that forgot account info) otherwise. Endgame went for incremental progression over the same old 3 day bot infested camp spawns which imo was a good move. Its not the same nostalgia i had back in the day but its still the best mmo to this day in my eyes. PM me if youd like to talk to us on vent, if any questions id be happy to help.

I don't want to make it sound bad, but when I say you're on your own I mean you're very prone to die if you try to explore lol. The really truly best thing about FFXI is the fact that you have 1 character, but with the 1 character you have 20 "jobs" you can level independently. Along with sub jobs, it's the best leveling system in any mmo I've played. Don't like your level 40 warrior? Feel like playing a mage for a bit? You're group needs a healer? You can potentially do all of this.

<-On carbuncle server if you feel like starting over and need some advice. otherwise GL.

They were horrid and completely counterintuitive to me.  It was an opinion, I should have stated so.  Sorry, but I refuse to use a controller for my PC, I have a console for that :)

Haha I've already died three times figuring out the battle system fighting Mandragoras. I eventually got teh hang of it and showed those plant things just who's boss.

I'm not so shallow as to quit right away if I die :P I was having fun regardless. Oh, is there a penalty for dying? I couldn't tell immeadiately or if the penalty shows up at later levels, like lv 10 in WoW.

The death penalty doesn't start until level 6 I believe... its an EXP loss by a percentage.

EXP loss? Harsh... but it is what it is :)

With the upcoming patch they are removing the XP loss from death at lvl 1-30, and lowering the curve from there to 75. It remainds the same post-75, though. This is good, because getting groups pre-30 is a pain in the ass nowadays.

Yes, you can do whatever you want in this game which is awesome, but there is a much higher risk if you fail (also awesome, in contrast to the spoon-fed gameplay of other MMOs). Also, FFXI has literally the best class system, in that you only need one character. I wish other games had that, because I am the king of alts.
