My opinions on Rift.

VespuraVespura Member Posts: 71

I'm probably gonna get some negative responses on this. Please do not take offense to it, I'm merely giving you my opinions on this game and telling you what I thought. I'm not trying to put down the game, I'm only telling you what I think.

So, when I picked up Rift, I was really excited. I had done my research, and I thought the game was going to be the most amazing thing ever...

Well, I popped it in, and I thought it was awesome. The graphics were amazing, and the starter area was unlike anything I had ever seen before. Soon after the starter area, the game quickly turned into the same old grind, only worse...

The whole thing was "Collect x of y and bring it to me." The reason it was worse was because of the mobs... There were no neutral mobs! Every single mob would attack you, and they were strong, so if you died, too bad. (unless there was someone near you to heal you, which there normall isn't.)

I continued to play, hoping it'd get better, but it just never did. I did a few Rifts, thinking they were going to be awesome, but they truly weren't, in fact, they were annoying. They spawn in the same exact place over and over again, there's nothing dynamic about them, and you don't even feel like you impacted the world in any way. You'll close one Rift, and then, 5 minutes later, it's back again. Plus, they're all exactly the same, there's nothing different about this death rift and that death rift. And the only thing worse than these two is the combat.

The combat is very stale, very boring. The animations aren't all that great, and it's the same auto-attack+spells/buffs. It was boring, and I can't express that enough. I don't like this in other games either, like WoW, but at least in WoW the animations are nice.

So let's continue onto the world. The world is, eh, very bland... I didn't see any weather cycles first of all, and second of all, when you'd enter a zone, the zone looks the same everywhere you look. There wasn't anything special about this world except the Rifts, which I talked about earlier...

So, in reality, this game is just the same (well, I don't want to say "WoW clone" because I hate that term, but... really... *sigh*) cereal with a new box. It just took the same generic thing with some minor changes and a major twist.

Now, I don't want to put this game down entirely. Will it be successful? Who knows, but I'm guessing yes, if Trion keeps their customers satisfied, which they seem to do quite well. They did a great job on making a game, but it just needs some major changes. This game is just not for me, and I won't be playing anymore. It's back to WoW (not that I like this game very much either, but at least it has more content) for me until Guild Wars 2 comes out. Whether you enjoy this game or not is for you to decide, this game is just definitely not for me.

I'm not sure Guild Wars 2 or Nights of the old will live up to the hype either. Rift did a smart move and just stuck to the basic MMO style game play with an upgrade to visuals. I enjoyed looking for the little shiny dots on the ground (artifacts) while doing quests or just grinding.  Other then that, it's the same old grind you find in any RPG. Not that it's a bad thing, I enjoy playing new MMO's, but just like the rest of you old school MMORPG players I'm looking for that feeling I got from the first MMORPG I played. The feeling of enjoyment and real adventure when running around a massive game world.  Sadly, I dont think I will find it because I know how MMO's work now and basicly they are all the same and yet, I still like playing new ones.

I'm pretty sure that the two will live up to hype. People are always looking for something new once they get tired of the same-old same-old grind. There are people like you out there who enjoy the grind, but from what I've seen, there are just as many, if not more of us who are tired of it. Guild Wars 2 and TOR probably the most hyped game to hit the shelves, and they aren't the same old grind like Rift, they're a totally new experience. But who knows, you could be right, but I hope not. The only reason I think you're wrong is because these two games are a totally new experience and they are both things a lot of people have been waiting for. In fact, GW2 is my, and a lot of other people's, dream mmo come true, so I just hope it lasts. I honestly can see the two competing against WoW, and I hope they can, though I doubt they will ever be able to reach the Goliath of which is WoW... But David beat Goliath, so let's see what happens.

One of the most fun parts of Rift is exploring the mountains on your mount.  There are surprises up there.

I hope you're being sarcastic, because if that's a most fun bit of Rift then I know why it struggles.

As im sure you were expecting im going to disagree with you but im doing so so that maybe people that read this blog in reference to play or not will have both sides.

First off TRION is an amazing company so far. Not only have they had an extremely minimal amount of problem from the moment of release they are also severely player friendly.

RIFTs are completely random. There are very few that a specd to respawn in one spot and those are merely story related rifts. all the rest are 100% random you can be questing aroung without a care in the world and a rift will simply appear above you. The dynamic part is in the fact that if a rift is not taken care of then invasions happen. If invasions arent taken care of they take over the entire area....not just wilderness towns as well. If it wasnt handled at all then even the player towns would be completely overun. You could say they are annoying or you could say that that benefit the social aspect of the game 100% its rarely possible to close rifts on your own. Not to mention there are many different themes for rifts. not only are there elemental themes that define what youll be fighting. but there are specification within the rift that pertain to different stories and such this rift you may fight a giant zombie from the death realm while this other rift is themed to the stopping of a summoning of a giant skeletal dragon. THough there are not an extreme amount of differences i once again would like to refer to trions amazingness, Within the what two months since its release theyve already had a WORLD event that is death rift related that not only introduced new types of death rifts but a new raid  as well.

Also endgame content has RIFT raids, as well as even more difficult rifts that not only hold more complex puzzles than their smaller counterparts but more difficult combat as well.

The combat is amazing. You are completely free to be whatever class with whatever specification you please.

AS for weather. It goes to show you did not go to play into further parts fo the game. The snow is awesome with what i understand to be amazing ambient snowfall.

My suggestion is to play the game beyond level twenty. And i understand if you dislike it and offer no complaint but your arguments are few and not fully explored.  :)

Rift spawns are not random in the way you are describing. There are only a limited set number of spawn locations per zone. If one spawns at coordinates (X: 400, Y: 450), then there is always a chance it will spawn EXACTLY there. Not (425, 450) or (400,475), but exactly (400, 450). It's a set spawn. The zones are full of set spawns. The only random aspect to it is that a tear will appear at a RANDOM set spawn location, not a random coordinate.

The dynamic part is in the fact that if a rift is not taken care of then invasions happen. If invasions arent taken care of they take over the entire area....not just wilderness towns as well. Yep, some Rifts will poof into nothingness if not taken care of, and some (Footholds) will spawn mobs. The term "dynamic" has become such an annoying hot button term to me.. I don't consider these events remotely dynamic, but that's a matter of opinion. They are very predictably scripted, which kills any dynamic factor to this aspect of the game for me.

The combat is amazing. You are completely free to be whatever class with whatever specification you please.

The combat was the same as WoW's to me, but the spell effects and sound effects fell heavily short when compared to the rest of the game. Regarding soul customization, other posters have hashed this out many times, so I will just give a tldr version:

Soul customization is much more apparent while leveling, but like every other game with some aspect of endgame PvE, there are, and always will be, best specs. Min/maxing is always prevalent in anyone past casual endgame PvE.

AS for weather. It goes to show you did not go to play into further parts fo the game. The snow is awesome with what i understand to be amazing ambient snowfall.

I agree, I found the weather effects to be quite pretty.

My suggestion is to play the game beyond level twenty.

I also agree with this. 1-20 is apparently a really good part of the game, as most people seem to lose interest much later in the game, or at cap.

.. But in a good way.

Well, I had gotten to 20, but I got to bored to even continue with the game. Like I said, it's the same game in a different box. Few changes here and there, but nothing special.

  • CrosswireCrosswire Member UncommonPosts: 264

Your right about the mobs, they are bloody awful.

I would say that this game is good for the free month that comes with the game and thats about it.

After the first week or so  it rapidly becomes a bore-fest and the combat and skill tree is really pants.

well personally it depends on why you play.  I enjoy raiding more then anything else, and I have been quite impressed with the raids, and raid rifts so far.

The graphics are great, the weather is good, the world events and zone events are fun, and I really enjoy the pvp more then wow.

there are things in game that when I posted in guild chat 2 out of 30 people online knew about, and we have all been playing since headstart.  Things like Zone pvp bosses.  Its been fun doing stuff as a guild, stuff like Rare hunting (we have a day a week where everyone goes on a rare mob hunt, then uses the guild banner to call the entire guild there to get credit for the kills.

Raid Rifts are challenging enough, and on our server, there is always opposing factions trying to interrupt our Rift Raid.  We have a friendly rivalry with another guild on server as to which guild gets more server firsts.  I am having a blast and cant wait to get my 5th spec in 1.2

I can let a lot of things slide since obviously a good number of players like this game but this is nowhere near the truth. Rifts are not even close to random.

Ok, they're not completely random, as in you won't see them spawn at every single possible location in an area, but only in 20-50 possible locations in an area. Sounds like random enough to me.

The only thing about the combat I dislike is how dull it is for clerics (can only judge from low level), can't help but think they are implicitly designed to be healers. They really need a resource like mage's charge, just something to add an extra dimension to their arsenal.

Have to agree about mob density though, it really needs retuning slightly, and the dismount is stupid - a mob should not have a 95% chance to dismount a player when said player is 6 levels higher :S

I'm still having fun after 3 weeks of play, probably not going to hit level cap on my main for a while though. Taking this one slowly, since I'm not sure I'll like end game from what I've read so far.

Just wanted to respond to this because I see it every where and it is simply not true.  There are a variety of them dependant on Rift type.  For example with death rifts there's one where you have to activate stones and kill the mobs in their radius of effect, one's where you simply take down a series of mobs, one's with elite mobs, etc.  I'm not saying the differences are revolutionary, but there are differences between the rifts.

Also in 1.2 trion is adding some further variation to lvl 50 rift events with tower defense, something where you summon a colossus to defeat the opposing factions one, etc.  There's an article on massively about it.  Interview with Scott Hartsman on 1.2.  Too lazy to get the link.

.. But in a good way.

  • nicariftnicarift Member UncommonPosts: 70

Black. Like several other i dont think dynamic is the correct word. However the traits this is most usually associated with is their interactive capabilities with the environment. If you look into the early testing and find the articles speaking about it youll see one (SOrry i cant post spacific cant really member where i read it) Thy took their rift system and let it run throughout a night no player envolvement and when they returned in the morning they found every aspect of the experiment taken over by the oposing faction.

This is where i think they brought in the word dynamic.. Every action of the rift npc/gaurdian npc/ defiant npc/ and normal mobs are actually at war. Its not like in most other games where they say they are at war and the only time the npcs confront each other is if the npc gets to close to the town. In this game They fight eachother. And one side can possibly win just as much as the other. You may be wondering through the wilderness and see this boar being attacked by this tiger creature.. or when a rift appears the natural life in that area assaults the imposing force.  Gaurdians actually have invasionary forces invading the defiant side and vice versa.

In this game. it truly is a war of all aspects.

Also for everyone saying that these mobs are to aggressive and the spawns to close together or whatever.  I have to through my opinion in on it. This is one of the best parts of the game. granted it gets annoying sometimes dieing over and over again. But it also requires to you think. Ok how am i gonna take out the six guys...will i do it all at once...can i pull this guy away? It offers that extra oomph to quests and wilderness in my opinion making you have to think and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Also the combat looks and feel are essentially going to resemble wow and other button pusshing mmos. The best part of the combat here is that its more reliant on how you use those skills than ever before. Atleast in my opinion. Its about using the right skill rotation. how am i going to do the most dps or burst damage or aoe. How do i maximize my effectiveness. The combat and soul aspect of this game allow you to delve into that on a level never used before.  If your looking for intense action RPG that youll be able to make your character do what would happen in rl or in movies or whatever doing flips and cuttin off heads all seamlessly woven together...then your right this isnt your game. But i can garuntee you wont find that game anywhere else in the mmorpgs industry.

Aside from the graphics, it's very similar to any other game. I've stopped playinf Warhammer Online due to playing it so much, but i'll give it this, it's alot more FUN then this, emphasis on fun. Warhammer Online is very overlooked and should definitely be trumping games like this. I spent and good few months on this game, playing beta and testing how level cap is, and its not that impressive. End game is very bland and should be improved if it seeks out any new players. Im definitely done from this game, probably going back to Warhammer Online, alot more polished, yes i said it, its a new game from launch.

I'm sorry is there another game that rifts open up in quests areas? What about roaming patrols attacking towns? I agree that alot of the fundamentals of Rift are not competely original but the gameplay is a new experience overall.
