If there were to be a mount system in gw2, how do you think it should it be done?

VespuraVespura Member Posts: 71

Please, no smarta** remarks (ie; "On foot", "Through a portal"), this thread is for the ones who would want to see a mount system in Guild Wars 2.

So how do you think it should be done?

How I think it should be done:

  • Mounts are stabled in your home instance

  • Mounts should have a health system and combat use (PvE only). You're obviously not going to be able to use all the skills you can use on foot on a mount, so why not a new set of skills (depending on your class and weapon, of course.)?

  • Feed pet to keep healthy (to keep health and speed potential at max.)

  • Groom pet to increase speed as well

  • Armor - Mount armor should be purchasable from a blacksmith

  • Dye - You should be able to dye your mount and your mount's armor, just as you can dye yourself

  • If your pet dies, it returns to your home instance

  • Your mount stays where you unmount it. If you travel too far from it, it will return to your home instance.

    • They should be expensive

    • They should have to eat

    • They should have health

    • If they die, they're dead forever

    • They should be used in combat

    • They don't magically appear out of your pocket.

    • You have to leave them in stables, tied to a hitching post or a tree, and you have to come back for it.

    • You shoul have to level a bit first
  • as arenanet says in many of their interviews, they are aiming for a fun experience, hop in battle hop out, do it hardcore or do it casual, all is possible.

so i don't really see mounts playing a big role in guildwars 2.

another thing, anyone seen the many video's around, they constantly use the map and teleport to locations (similar yet still different from gw1), so i cannot really tie this together with the use of mounts, if you wander too far it returns to home instance hmmm, just teleport back, take it, and teleport back to the action, bleh why even bother, leave it there, take the 10 steps yourself fight and teleport to the next battle.

yes, it is possible that they exist

    yes, it would be nice

no, they won't put mutch effort in creating entirely new skillsets with animations for mounts and every combo with weapson+mount.

but hey, thats just what i think will happen, you are free to dream and hope for some of your features to make it of course.

But there are already mounts in Guild Wars 2 insofar as ArenaNet wants to include them. @_@

    It goes like this:

    1. You sheathe your weapons.

    2. You break into a sprint animation.

    3. You move faster.

This is the Guild Wars 2 variant of:

    1. You use your mount item.

    2. You get on your mount.

    3. You move faster.

I mean, if they were to add any more 'mounts' then it would be redundant.

Yo dawg, we herd u leik mounts, so we put mounts on ur mounts so u can speed boost while u speed boost.

Yes, that was a bit smartarse, but mounts are already in the game, functionally speaking, and the only part that isn't there is the aesthetic side of it, which just seems to be for braggy collectors whom enjoy grinding anyway. But here's a problem: There's no grinding in Guild Wars 2.

So I have a proposal: ArenaNet should put a purely aesthetic charr & asura designed car on the store for $100, then you grind at work RL until you can afford it, you buy it, and you have a shiny new mount to show off. Because of the asura involvement, it has an in-built waypoint device, so it can waypoint out of there when you're not using it. It'd look a little bit flashy, but other than that it wouldn't do much.

ArenaNet can then use those funds to add free content for everyone else.

That's a win-win scenario if you ask me.

I'm sorry, I just can't take this more seriously than that because functionally mounts are already in the game.

(Oh, also... charr mounts. A car can't exactly die. And I've already dealt with why having persistent mounts would be a problem, it'd be an issue for those on lower end computers, and I dealt with why having mounts run off and disappear would be a problem, because the mount is invariably going to disappear right next to someone which cannot be avoided in an MMORPG. Aside from that, I'm all for augmentations like cars and mounts showing up in dynamic events, but only for those dynamic events, tehy change your skillbar for that dynamic event and then you're done. So... anything else would be pointless.)

honestly...I see that the people who want mounts want to use them in combat...but only PvE...how sad.

If they did have mounts in this game, I would want them to be implemented with the following stipulations:

    • combat usable.  I would enjoy being able to fight on horseback, but that creates an issue with change in skills, this could be solve by giving everyone mount skills, or solved by limiting ONE class to being able to use mounts (as in a mounted class).  If the second option was done, and we got a mounted class, which I think would be cool, the mount could have health much like a pet has health for rangers (I am not really a fan of the way rangers were designed but that has more to do with the fact that I have NO IDEA what playing one in GW2 will be like despite having tried one in a demo at PAX prime).

    • This game doesn't really have a requirement for using mounts as fast travel so the amount of movement speed increase should be kept to a reasonable level, enough to effect there usage on the battlefield, but not enough to make them uncatchable if they are being chased.  (see running builds in GW1)

    • following the previous condition that I would want mounts only if they were used by a mount class, they should still follow you like a pet if you aren't mounted on them.

basically I used this thread to say I think a mounted class would be awesome.  Otherwise, not interested, though not really opposed (too much) to mounts used the way they are in other games.

I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

All that sounds very time consuming and not very fun after awhile. Not that there all bad ideas or anyhthing it's just not something I would want to deal with in the long term.

I'm not completely opposed to mounts if there done right. Instead of players collecting mounts and having the usual grind involved in getting them. What I would like to see in a game would be tricky to do.

I have this idea where the animals that would normaly be mounts are just out and about in the world and you could just go tame them until you either release them, are not on them for a set time or tame another mount.

The tame skill could be a tier based skill. Meaning some mounts would need a higher tiered skill. Raising skill would involve doing some tasks or other means of working for, but not through just paying some gold. Higher tiered mounts wouldn't always go faster but could have more HP or better skills if they were combat capable. Some mounts could be geared towards evasion and used for travel and others would be for fighting.

Obviously there are problems that arise like the amount of players needing mounts vs number of mounts in an area.

Basicly instead of mounts being items that players own they would be a part of the world.

All of these ideas for mounts don't sound fun at all.

I would say putting them in the game would go against their current world set up, but if they were I'd say make a few creatures up and let every race ride every mount type and have them be summonable much in the same way a horse is summoned in Red Dead Revolver.

I am fine with mounts used in combat, with a set of weponskill based on you are riding!

my quess is thats already ingame in either some minigame or in personal story somewhere!

GW2 is full of instant teleport, take those out and then mounts are of some use in the game.

What is the point of this thread if mounts are not going to be in the game?

  • alan0alan0 Member Posts: 50

wasnt there a bigger thread about this just started last week? with it all explained.

  • CookieTimeCookieTime Member Posts: 353

I thought this thread is going to discuss ways of how to successfully implement mounts in the world of GW2, and not how mounts should work in general. Pointless thread.

They don't fit. It would need significant changes. No.

My reply was pretty much a pipe dream that will never happen just an idea. As far as GW2 goes...

Anet is making the game, doesn't want mounts in it and has better systems in place. Guess what isn't going to be in the game no matter how many people complain? If you say mounts you would have gotten a cookie....accept I ate them all. Otherwise you get a swift kick in the junk.

it should be done as minigames in cities like

*moa rider races in which you are placed on a track mounted on  a moa and race against other players. The track should have obstacles which you can pass using the skills on your unique minigame skill set.

                                                                       or

                                                                            * Charr rocket science in which you are propelled from a cannon mounted on a wheeled rocket thingie and experience a drag style race again using an unique minigame skill set.

    I need more vespene gas.

Does anyone remember the ancient roman charriot racing, thats how i would like to see land based mounts incorporated intoo a mini game...

And flying mounts.... a racing mini game that comes close to Star-wars pod racing...

And mounts in PvP, the same way as they are incorporated in FPS shooters.... they are on the battlefield as objects and once you capture them, they let you operate them and change your action bar...

Maybe even a mini game that lets you ride an obstacle course on a mount, for the fastest time...

I just love mounts, as long as they don't allow people to act like fools when riding them.....
