    i think that 2.5D game designers may have a bigger hurdle to overcome to deliver immersive games, but they certainly can.

     

    i remember secret of mana (a 2.5D game from 16bit nintendo) and the steam cheapie Machinarium as two extremely immersive games that were not 3d.

    I would definitely say no, my limited time with UO was immersive but the reason I say no is my many hours logged into Bioware's NWN that was 2.5D and was incredibly immersive, though thinking about it and what others have said I'm a sound person as I'm  a music lover and sound has a big place in my life and NWN sound atmosphere was great as was the case UO as well. So great sound and atmosphere and I'm immersed, graphics only need to have a consitent style quality for me not to bothered about them.
