I wonder if it would be possible to have a character that...

I want to make an illuminati character that relies only on steel wit and bullets. Something tells me if the setting of the game were real, I'd absolutely hate those pampered magic-users that have it so goddamned easy, and it will reflect in my main character. Only thing is; I wonder if I would be gimping myself.

I know that *everything* is specualation at this point, but would avoiding literally every branch of magic in the game make for a useless char? I figure that all the support skills might be wrapped up in them, if there are no gadget-type abilities to make up for it. Always been about batman over superman anyway, the dude had any superhero/villain by the balls - if he wanted to.

    Yes.

500 unique skills, a hell of a lot of disciplines outside of the magic ones.

Seems to me that there's enough choice and flexibility to create a non-magic user.

Although, if you want to create a nuker without magic skills, that might be a problem.

With 500 skills I think you will see every base covered in multiple themes like melee weapon damage, ranged weapon damage, magic damage, magic heals, tech heals, etc.  I think you will be able to create whatever character you want as that is one of the main goals of this game.

Lol. Heh, yeah, I guess that serves as a good nuking too.

Maybe a bazooka or grenade launcher/machinegun (don't know the exact name of that kind of combi weapon:-/ ) are ingame too image

I know I will have my char have a katana in one hand, a pistol in the other, and support/curse type magic.  I really think people will have a lot of freedom with looks, style, etc.

    There better be.

I told my girlfriend that I was going to make a character that looked like her as the chinese woman sort of reminds me of her. She told me that if that was the case that character wouldn't be using magic or even a gun. It would only use a Sword.

So, I have my work cut out for me.

That's the one thing that made me "awww damn it" when I first saw that there will be magic in the game. Currently I don't care anymore but I am with you. Rather use gadgets and wits than fireball my way down an escalator.

But like others are saying, with 500 skills there has to be multiple themes involved so making a non-magic charcater seems good to go.

Well, they've said they want to remove all limitations, and what the players to make a character how THEY want, with no limit of what abilities you can/cant use, no classes or anything like that. So i assume yes, you can be a more badass-normal character, then a super-powered freak.

So lets say your going to make a kung fu sniper or whatever...you going to ignore benificial buffs and debuffs?

That would be nice, I've always wanted to nuke someone.. with an actual nuke.

They seem to be going in the right direction with this game, but keep on reminding them about what it is the players want. Funcom is very bad about promissing a lot and delivering only half of it. I will say I hope secret world is everything they have said so far, I been wanting a call of cthulu style mmo for a long time. Yet funcom has fallen into the same boat with SOE, meaning I look before I leap with their games.

Well i hope its diffrent this time.  Its not 2001 and they arnt the first company to appempt something of this scope and magnatude as with Anarchy Online, and this is their own IP, there shouldnt be any owners of IP getting antsy and rushing them to release in order to stay competative with other cookie cutter fantasy mmorpgs.

Either way, with both of funcoms failures they were able to turn it around and ended up sticking with it in the longrun, which cant be said for SOE, which seems to choose a sit and die method for games that are not a smashing success, or just canceling it outright.  In fact comparing funcom to SOE is not a good comparison, SOE treats their games like shit compared, i mean they still are developing anarchy online, AoC got a new engin, an engin it didnt really need (i hope thats their way of testing out the TSW engin before the game is released)

But yeah, unless your frothing at the mouth for this game, give it a month or however long it takes for them to get it to where you want it to be...its not like this company has a history of shutting a game down, ever, no matter how crappy the launch and proceeding 6months-1yr are.

The only thing that would kill this game, would for it to turn out not to be so unique, like a themepark witha  grindy skill system with 5 or 6 "class" type builds that everyone uses, and where not using the 6 OP class type builds is gimping yourself.
