As usual only negative reviews get their own threads in this forum and in the official forums... the usual guys keep trying to prove something. If i had to create one thread about each positive preview of the game, i would be banned for spam!
Anyway keep going in your crusade against this game, it will be worthless in the end. Have a nice day!
Yep, just as I've been saying. They wasted too much time and money on video cut scenes and fluff and not enough on immersive substance.
I'd like to address that in light of this article.
the problem here is that you have a highly subjective article that is essentially going to speak to people such as yourself who pretty much share your views.
I highly suspect that if a player who was more engaged with these types of stories and who was more open to this experience tried this game the article would be the reverse.
It comes down to this, which people have said time and time again, you are going to either like this type of game or hate it.
Take the dragone age or mass effect games. Some people absolutely despise them. and just for the movie moments alone. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a post or article with someone going on and on about how they dont' want to be watching a movie they want to play a game.
does that make these games bad?
no.
It does mean that they will only speak to a certain demographic of player. From everything I've witnessed, both online and at Pax East I will respecfully disagree with your statement and say that they were right to invest as much time and money on video cut scenes and other items that only enhnace one's immersion.
For every person who despises this type of game play there will be a person who loves it.
gamespot has this:
The Old Republic's story and quests are intriguing, and its scope is absolutely enormous. Stay tuned to GameSpot for more updates on this promising game leading into E3 and its eventual launch later this year.
Are they any more right or wrong? That depends on which box seat you have tickets for.
This is clearly going to be a game that polarizes the playerbase. Having said that, after seeing the turnout and the faces at Pax East I can tell you that this game is going to be very popular among those players who are willing to buy into this type of game play.

given the article in PCGamer though... it looks like things are not going that well at Bioware.. but.. it was always a bit obvious.. the game will live or die by its game mechanics.. storyline is nice and all that.. but its not enough to make a game.. there needs to be more than just 'script' ... perhaps i was being too optimistic thinking the game would be released in november.. maybe it really will be next year.... .. november 2012 that is...
and while some of the points given were.. in 48 hours you can't see much of the game... i think the major point is.. how many days do you have to play it for before the game starts being fun? .. at the moment the best that can be hoped for is that the version they were given to play.. was such a 'barebones' demo that the things that would normally make it fun.. had not yet been implemented..
worse case scenario... this game could make SWG look good...
I thought the PC Gamer article was rather positive from what I have gathered.
That's why it is stupid to base an opinion on what someone else has written. Reading reviews is great, but I try to limit reading them until I have been in a beta for a game or seen clips of a movie, to judge for myself.
exactly. Reviews are good for showing the reader one person's point of view, hopefully with solid examples and explanations of that point and it's the reader's job to assess which of those opionions/examples resonate with him/her.

Pc gamer UK was negative yet pc gamer US was positive. it all depends on whos writing the specific article. personally i just skim most reviews(yes i know these are previews, im talking in general) for information i care about on how things work and try to leave their personal opinions out of it when looking for a game. doesn't always work but helps let me decide for myself.

There were 2 pc gamer articles. One from the UK magazine and other from the US! The UK guy aka Tom Francis, just complained about stuff that it's pretty normal in all MMO's, which means he probably had very little or even zero experience with them. In fact some people who got to play the game in the past weekend, called him a douche because they didn't experienced anything of what he described.
One think is giving a constructive opinion, other is to rant of say things like "this is the most boring game or MMO i've played in my life", really?! what a joke.

Well, giving the benefit of the doubt even if all of your posts on SWTOR are negative in one way or the other . But you're completely wrong about the reactions upon SWTOR's gameplay. You only refer to the ones that had some negative comments, which yes, I know SWTOR bashers love to quote, but at the same time ignoring the 95% of other previews and reports that were positive to enthusiastic.
Shrug. Seems to me that you've made up your mind never to play SWTOR anyway.

im in the UK.. guess which one i read
Bah you and your Royals, From everything I have read, things have mostly been positive, some have not liked the cover mechanics, but mostly positive reviews.
Well UK PC Gamer May edition wrote this after their 48 time with the game..
Plot Figures.
The visual effects of combat between eight players are fast, flashy and tough to read, but the actual business of killing people is SLOW. That means it may have some tactical depth at higher levels of skill and coordination, but it isn't hugely satisfying to play.
A lot of the compromises and oddities of The Old Republic come from BioWare's determination not to let anything get in the way of them telling a traditional, singleplayer RPG story.
It makes grouping up awkward-if you play different classes, you can't both make story progress together. If you play the same class, the story makes less sense and you have clone companions.
But if BioWare had sacrificed the story-driven aspect of their game, there wouldn't be much reason to play The Old Republic. Other MMOs have BETTER COMBAT MODELS and more IMPRESSIVE WORLDS.
Instead, they've gone with an awkward fit,but one i do want to play.
Early on,it's painful. The Old Republic has a cover system, but oddly it's restricted to certain classes. The Bounty Hunter isn't one of them,so when you've only got a few abilities you're really just standing there in a large open area hitting number keys.
I've heard BioWare call this `heroic combat`, but I wasn't really feeling it. When i hid behind a nearby wall to cool off during a boss fight, the boss couldn't figure out how to get to me and immediately went into `evade` mode, rendering him invincible and healing all the damage I'd dealt so far.
they dicuss the article indepth and pull alot of direct quotes from it. but it is an old republic videocast so do expect a certain amount of bais at the very least

the cover mechanics... well it is hard to be positive about that..though i regard several other issues as being far more serious.. ..must admit though..im more than a little curious as to why the US and UK versions of the magazine are so much out of tune.. i've never read the american one so i have no idea if thats the norm ..

well both magazines sent different writers. in the UK article, the writer mentions his partner playing the agent. im guessing that would be the guy who wrote the US article since his article covered his playtime as an agent
edit: just pulled my pc gamer out to check. Tom Francis(think thats his name) wrote the the UK article and Josh Augustine wrote the US article
First it was the PC Gamer article guy not liking this much at all and now this. I don't know but it sounds like good first impressions are not happening here. I am starting to think that 2012 will seem more likely for The Old Republic.
One article that is majorly negative and people fall apart? This is a pretty bad article overall, he doesn't touch on a lot of things the other articles did, and I've read through most of the previews, some of which played the game for the same amount of time and left without even knowing about multi speccing in advanced classes.
This guy is complaining about a game meant for tens of thousands online at any given time, that has 50 players in it, being empty. This guy is all 5 shades of idiot, he barely touches on any of the story decisions, and, furthermore, this isn't even remotely a site of merit. There have been plenty of other sites releasing previews of the game that have been overwhelmingly positive. I wouldn't even be half surprised if this guy released a bad review just to generate hits.
So beacuse his review doesn't live up to your feelings of what SWTOR deserves his opinion dosen't matter? Or worse he MUST have some fiendish alterior motive for giving the game a bad review in the first place?
I can completely accept you disagree with his review, but FFS Masked, please stop with the conspiracy theory nonsense. All you are doing with comments like these is to make those of us willing to give this game the benefit of the doubt look like raving maniacs.
Getting hits on his site is simply conjecture, but reading his review it seemed rather content thin and his points of view didn't make sense. I mean seriously, there were 50 people playing across the entire world and he's talking about the game not having enough people?
Come on now. Then he goes in to saying how (all paraphrasing here) that the story choices were mundane, and barely goes through ANY of the choices with the readers at all. I find it rather disproportionate to just about every other regular preview we've read. Even the RPS review which was mildly negative at least had more meat to the game (although his ideas on class abilities were a little off) but they also had some good things to say about the game too.
Bad reviews are okay as long as you aren't dealing with a bad reviewer. He could have been much more succinct in his review and his experience and I would have disliked his stance, but at least agreed he gave it an honest try. Do you really feel from what he wrote that he actually set out to be thorough in his review?
These after all, are opinions, and a negative opinion is just as valid as the many positive ones we've read... but ... come on now, I see little dignity in some of these opinions.
given the article in PCGamer though... it looks like things are not going that well at Bioware.. but.. it was always a bit obvious.. the game will live or die by its game mechanics.. storyline is nice and all that.. but its not enough to make a game.. there needs to be more than just 'script' ... perhaps i was being too optimistic thinking the game would be released in november.. maybe it really will be next year.... .. november 2012 that is...

Well I would imagine since you're surrounded by other British people, you may have realized how worthless their opinions are and started reading the only opinions that matter, those from the U.S.
Well UK PC Gamer May edition wrote this after their 48 time with the game..

He did not play 48 hours, if that's what you're thinking! And what he wrote is just his opinion, which doesn't represent a majority! All the people or almost everyone who got to play the game this past weekend for hours... said the planets/environments and the graphics of the game are stunning. They also said the combat is awesome and some even said it was the best combat they ever had in an MMO!
You can call them fanboys or whatever you like, but you can't ignore all the positive previews about the game. It happened in GAMESCON 2010, PAX PRIME 2010, PAX EAST 2011, GB UK EVENT and now in the fan summit.
Btw it's a shame Mr Tom Francis didn't pointed out which MMO's he was talking about, im curious... since he seems to have zero experience with online games.
First it was the PC Gamer article guy not liking this much at all and now this. I don't know but it sounds like good first impressions are not happening here. I am starting to think that 2012 will seem more likely for The Old Republic.
You should be aware by now that SWTOR bashers and critics purely love to quote the negative comments, and none of the positive ones. You refer to 2 previews of SWTOR that were the most negative, while ignoring the PC Gamer US and the 95% of the other reports and previews that were positive and enthusiastic about their gameplay experience.

A bit biased against SWTOR, don't you think?
It's something i don't understand. Im starting to believe people are getting paid to talk trash about the game, im serious. I don't understand all the hate around this game, i simply don't!
So did the NDA get lifted or something, seams like somebody does not like bioware from what im reading.
This is just a preview from a weekend of playtesting or so for an event BioWare had. We have, what, maybe 20 - 30 reviews of the gameplay over the past couple months. This is the worst (meaning most critical) review of them all, but ultimately MOST of them have been very positive.
I find rap music to be pretty dull, I find lots of well received movies to be dull, it's a matter of personal preference. MMO's depend largely on the playerbase in terms of being dull or fun, if I find people I like playing with, just about any of them can be fun. If I find that a MMO has a dead or dying community it usually turns out that the game is pretty dull to play. I'll take this "review" with a grain of salt for now.

First it was the PC Gamer article guy not liking this much at all and now this. I don't know but it sounds like good first impressions are not happening here. I am starting to think that 2012 will seem more likely for The Old Republic.
Except that there have already been a WHOLE LOAD of good first impressions.
This is the problem here.
People have staked their sides right from the outset and essentially, intentionally, ignored what has come before so they can fix themselves to news that supports a view point that they have had right from the outset.
And if you are saying that you didn't have a viewpoint right at the outset and this is the first "impressions" news you have seen then take heart: there have been many write ups that have already given the SWToR experience a hearty "thumbs up".
What going to happen is this. and you can set your watch on this.
Players on both sides are going to gather whatever bits of news and footage support their sides right up to launch and argue themselves hoarse. Many players are going to give the "I doubt this will make 300k sales" arguments. Probably because they can't possibly imagine that anyone else couldn't possibly not agree with their opinion. Oh, incidentlaly the top two movies of last week were Rio and Tyler Perry's Madea's big happy family. go figure on taste.
It's then going to sell way over a million easily from very eager people who are already chomping at the bit to play this one.
You are then going to get the same polarizing reviews after the launch. Whether or not SWToR is going to be able to keep those subs is another thing but I suspect it will be a hit in the short term.
This is going to be a polarzing game and I will also state that the people who are probably going to get the most enjoyment out of it are not going to be the old school die hard mmo gamer types or the people who are bothered by cut scenes in games.

When i hid behind a nearby wall to cool off during a boss fight, the boss couldn't figure out how to get to me and immediately went into `evade` mode, rendering him invincible and healing all the damage I'd dealt so far.

for anyone that hadn't seen the pc gamer uk article, maybe watch this: http://www.gamebreaker.tv/swtor-the-republic-37-embargoes/
they dicuss the article indepth and pull alot of direct quotes from it. but it is an old republic videocast so do expect a certain amount of bais at the very least
the cover mechanics... well it is hard to be positive about that..though i regard several other issues as being far more serious.. ..must admit though..im more than a little curious as to why the US and UK versions of the magazine are so much out of tune.. i've never read the american one so i have no idea if thats the norm ..
well both magazines sent different writers. in the UK article, the writer mentions his partner playing the agent. im guessing that would be the guy who wrote the US article since his article covered his playtime as an agent
edit: just pulled my pc gamer out to check.
Well I would imagine since you're surrounded by other British people, you may have realized how worthless their opinions are and started reading the only opinions that matter, those from the U.S.
ROFL I'm kidding
So did the NDA get lifted or something, seams like somebody does not like bioware from what im reading.

The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
It's something i don't understand. Im starting to believe people are getting paid to talk trash about the game, im serious. I don't understand all the hate around this game, i simply don't!
