I get that being online changes it a bit, but character customization is the last thing i care about personally in a game compared to gameplay itself and content. The game could be the coolest one of them all but we dont know that, we just know you cant customize a character. Its really not that big a deal if the game is awesome.

Also if people care so much about customization why do most of them do their very best to replicate known comic book characters?

Those games you just mentioned are SINGLE-PLAYER ACTION GAMES.

You know who is going to want to play this boring, shallow, CoD in spandex Virtua Fighter: Marvel Edition MMO for 14.99 a month?!!

    Nobody!

Meanwhile Vindictus is one of the most popular games out there, and it features 3 whole characters to choose from with the only customization being underwear you get to pay 10 bucks for.

Customization isn't as much an issue as people scream and cry about. There's already a bunch of superhero mmo's where you make your own game. I for one am looking forward to being able to play as Storm or Gambit, two of my favorite Marvel characters. I'm hoping it takes me back to the arcade days. Anyone remember the X-Men side-scroller? Nightcrawler was a beast.

The Marvel Universe game will be F2P.

The people that are incapable of enjoying anything other than an MMORPG of the type they favor might not like this game.  People with more diverse tastes in games might like it quite a bit (though almost nothing is known about the gameplay at this point).  It's likely that more people than "Nobody" will enjoy the game.

It wonder how they will do the naming of the characters, Superman(Sam), Superman(Cindy), Superman(Susan). If there is no customization, how will players be able to find each other or know who each other are?

No can do if it's non-customizeable. This will fail.

Of course they won't. What a silly suggestion ... Superman is DC not Marvel, They would get their pants sued off if they did that. Instead they will name them Spiderman(Sam), Spiderman(Cindy), Spiderman(Susan). image

Popular compared to what?  Seems like it barely made a splash at all, once it came out that you couldn't make your own character.  The repetitive grindiness almost took a back seat to that, and it wasn't so long ago that it was being hyped as the next big thing in the MMO world..  then it just sort of fizzled when it released, and lack of customization probably had a lot to do with that.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

Kyleran is on the mark - only way this will work is that this will be a solo experience with co-op play instances. The game will give slots for missions and not allow more than one type of character for immersion purposes. I suppose they can use alternate universe models if they really have a problem with so many spidermen that no one else is available, but as far as a standard persistent world. I doubt that they will use that formula in this game.

Well, at least the game would be unique with regard to this... I mean every MMO has some sort of customisation lets try one where there isn't any D:

I see a company that is bringing out an MMO with zero customization and I have to wonder if they've done any research at all into MMOs.

Another problem I see with this total lack of customization is balance.   If they are going to make everyone play an iconic character, then the comparative powers of these characters in their source books goes right out the window.    Will Falcon be just as powerful a character as say, Thor?     Will Black Widow be on par with Hulk?   And on and on.

Hey, maybe I'll form an All Wolverine guild.   Where we can all look identical and have the exact same powers.

Doesn't seem like this was very well thought out.

It will probably work like LOL you que up for a certain mission and pick a hero, than everyone else can't pick that hero and you can unlock new heroes with points earned in game or buy skins or heroes with cash.

We still know almost nothing about it, so it's hard to say if it's well thought out or not.

It's not likely that it'll play like the standard MMORPG.  But, a game doesn't have to be an MMO to be fun.

It's funny how bitter people can be about a game that isn't designed to suit them.  Especially when that game is free.  Some people seem to be really tired of the same old MMOs, and when a game is planned to be not more of the same, it's automatically considered a failure.

"I demand something different, and tons of innovation, as long as it plays EXACTLY like my favorite MMO of all time".  Weird.

I'm not saying I'm going to like or dislike the game, but I think I'll wait to hear more, maybe try it, before passing judgment.

Well I can see 2 ways they might go to make this less strange:

    1. They make it a very different format from the standard WoW-lookalike. Unfortunaly I can only see massive separation of the playerbase to make it less weird (less chance for 7xMagneto in the same spot), practically a instanced lobby-like game. The "universe" part might be a bit misleading in this scenario.

    2. They explain it with lore, in other words its "The Clone Wars" in Marvel universe. image Even with that "explanation" it would be just as weird as a standard persistent world: we'll see 47 spidermen dancing vertically on a huge road sign.

I didn't see anything about not being able to customize at ALL, just that you'd be playing a specific character.  If the game is strong on other points, and somehow they prevent you from running into clones of yourself while providing a quality multiplayer experience, it could still be a great game, just probably not what most would consider an MMORPG.

Doh, there is lot's of character customization in Diablo.

Well, I'm one that enjoys creating a charecter and making a name for myself in a vast world. Superhero MMOs included. If they keep this as a no customization, I can see myself avoiding it. As it stands, there will probably be about 10,000 wolverines and a handfull of various other super heros. And in essance, you won't be out making a name for yourself, but for the superhero you represent. As will every other person out there.

Wonder if this has anything to do with the IPs and why the first marvel universe went under.  Marvel has a lot more complicated rights agreement then DC has.  The authors hold more power.
