State of AoC?

Oh.no.U_OOh.no.U_O Member UncommonPosts: 30

So I've been playing swg for a month or so and gotten my 2 90s but with the crap load of stuff thats currently going on with sony atm im not sure if i'll be sticking around for much longer.  As of now I'm looking at going back to my favorite game AoC.  The only reason I left a couple months ago is because tyranny seemed so dead.  So I guess I'm typing this to see if population in the servers is any better now?  I'm also go for transferring to a different server if I must to have a better population, all I ask is that its got some open world pvp possibilities.

I've been meddeling around the forums a bit and saw something about new servers being added and am kinda in the mood for that like to move my dt to a new server and start afresh.  not lvling wise though of course! took me to long to get him lvled, I don't care to do it again.

Any words are great, I just want to have an idea of what it may be like if i do decide to reactivate. going to mess around on free unlimited trial until i make my decision.

I quit a little over a month ago and went to Rift with my guild. It is my understanding that most of the big guilds all left to go to Rift from all servers. The population before that was pretty low on Set so my guess is that the pvp servers are pretty bad off for numbers. As far as the new server goes it seems to be the common occurence when talking about AoC and Funcom. To little to late. Obviously I cant directly confirm all this but from the looks and sounds of things from the few people I know that didnt move to Rift is that the game is probably at its lowest point right now which is somewhat sad.

Ya I too moved to Rift, fun game but I find it to easy.  I don't mind the game but its not my box of pie :P

Sure, some will quit rift just like i did and stumble their way back to whatever they were playing before, no exception to those that played AoC.

I know on the forums alot are saying the Conan movie coming out in a few months will probably raise subs a bit. Lets just hope they do, the only thing killing the game for myself is the low pop.  I enjoyed it even when it was plagued with all its bugs and mem leaks.  Be nice if they would just go out and try to appeal to a mass amount of new people to come join. All I really see them doing is adding new raids and instances that are hard to get a group together for as is.

From all accounts and some people I've talked to, Tyranny is considered pretty dead, although a rough core of people still pvp there. Cimmeria is better, but numerous amounts of players in recent months have moved to either Wicanna or Set - mostly Wicanna from what I can see. The new server you mentioned is probably the new Blood & Glory server, talked about here. It's a new start server as well, so every one will have to start from scratch. No transfers on or off either. Many players who left have expressed interest in it though, because Funcom indicated it will have pvp back in Tortage and ffa pvp - that post outlines all the details. Removal of Bori was another thing asked for frequently for the new server. They also mentioned merging Tyranny & Cimmeria, although this was floated as an idea rather than a confirmed event.

As for the technical elements of the game, it is largely stable and crash free now (not for every single person though). Dreamworld, after some hiccups (its Funcom after all), is now bedded in and seems to be doing the trick with many - higher fps, smoother in Khitai. They also seem to be pumping out new content. Should have been like this at launch, or shortly after. The grind aspect of Khitai is also being adresses shortly - major boosts to faction xp / and tokens, etc. I would agree with the other poster though, Funcom have dithered around too long, but if the game can continue it's upward swing, it should be able to grind on over a rough patch for a bit. Really just needs more players, and Funcom could do with advertising the damn game too. The number of guildies and friends that have just become frustrated with 'meaningful' (and I stress meaningful) progression is too numerous to count. Heaps of raids, 6-mans and dungeons and little or no return. I'm all for the challenge and the rewards, but it aint fun to go several years (yes, years!) and not get a particular weapon or piece or gear - they just throw up there hands in disgust and go elsewhere.

Thx for the reply Salmon, this shed a good deal of light on some of my questions.  In particular I was thinking of moving to cimmeria though I have no experience in how rp-pvp works, still have that to look at but if its a better pop then its well worth the pop.

I left before the dreamworld update came along but never really had any problems running the game on max anyway so should just help to make it even smoother I would think.  I know when I last played there were only really a few decent sized guilds running around and it was rough getting raids to do every week so I think a move to cimmeria is definitely something I will be doing.

As for the new servers the ruleset does sound interesting, so even if I cant transfer to that server I will probably make my 1 toon allowed anyways just as something to do on the side

Re-subbed after not playing since shortly after launch.  Tyranny looks dead.  Played for awhile till I found out that not much PVP happens till level 80.  I didn't want to grind and then find out what PVP is like.  Went back to WoW after not playing for years and I might not stay long...  This game was never really great.  They should have finished it before launching and maybe the story would be different.

I would love to see a good new MMORPG soon.  I haven't been impressed with a MMORPG since DDO. Age of Conan, Warhammer, etc. disappointed a lot.  Something with good PVP required.  I Rift in beta briefly and it was more of the same, but worse than WoW.

I miss old school PVP MMORPGs.

I'm redownloading the game now, I'm almost a little ashamed to say.  I've never subbed for fear of the declining population, and really only done the trial for a few weeks several months ago--I got turned off by an apocalyptic thread on the official forums where a lot of players called the devs to the carpet for WOWifying the game, among other sins, and frankly I still have some concerns from that, especially since the tone tended to put me in the middle of it (I'm a consensual-pvp-only guy)--but here recently as I've made the circuit through the usual LFGame milieau while I wait for GW2 (which is still going to be yet quite a wait), and I found myself thinking that this is the last game that I played in which I actually had fun.

    Remember fun?  Wasn't fun great?

Now to be fair, I have no delusions that the rest of the game will be as polished and funded as Tortage, since it's basically the sales room, but there's a spark in me somewhere that really, really wants to hope this game will make it, because it's actually different and fun.  I'm more convinced the more games I play that this is really the only non-first generation MMO out there that qualifies as a persistent theme-park MMO without also qualifying as a WOW clone.  There was a time when I thought I would never have to make that qualification, but that time is gone.  So I'm holding out hope that despite its imperfections, the server population is at least stable enough--or if not, FC will take steps to make it--to give the game the kind of longevity to keep it around for the foreseeable future.

The alternative, I'm afraid, is a bit of a heart-breaker for me--and I've never even subbed to the game!

So I'm going back to Tortage to hang out for a bit and see if anything happens.  Maybe I've got nostalgia syndrome and I'll realize that I really can't afford to pay for a game that has a very reasonable likelihood of shutting down in the near future, and at least arguably should have gone F2P a long time ago.  Or maybe I'll get bored.  Wouldn't be the first time.  But on the other hand, maybe I'll have some fun, and that's a reasonable risk for no money down.

    Peace and safety.

The Godslyaer xpac killed it for me.  The rediculous grindfest that was evident throughout that entinre xpac was too much for me.  Especially when you had to do some e-motes on a boss...was like "Are you SHITTING ME!?!?!?!" when a guildie looked up and found the strat.

Just coming back myself.  I was in at launch but never stayed despite liking the game, and when I came back during a winback weekend about a year later I had a blast but was in a bad financial position at the time and so couldn't resubscribe.

I'm playing on Cimmeria, and have yet to hit the server during prime time, and have character only in the level 20-30 range, which I'd feared would be utterly deserted.  To my surprise, I found both people to group with, people to gank, and people to get ganked by.  These are not bustling zones by any means, but there are still people around, and you can find them via the social tool.

The game still requires a pretty good system to run it on at high settings, but it looks great - better, even, thanks to DX10 and some Dreamworld engine updates that have been done.  I have had no client issues regarding stability or glitches thus far.  Gameplay is still fantastic; it looks like some rebalancing has been done (I know stats and gear have been reworked) but I don't have a solid opinion on that yet.

The Khitai grind issue is supposed to have been addressed by the patch released this week.  I can't say from personal experience, but word from the AoC forum is that it's a big improvement in that regard.

Problem with AOC is they totaly screwed up the release.  The game was very unfinished, unstable and lacked polish.  For an MMO to be like that at release theres almost no coming back, unless the developers do something amazing (which just hasn't happened with AOC).  There is more competition from TOR on the way too which will probably be big.

They need to do something to attract more players even if it means loosing money in the short-term.  New players are not going to start playing an MMO which has a low population.

Theres two major issues keeping me from giving this game another serious shot, one of them is the population. I don't want to invest time in a game with no future. If they some how manage to pull people back I will probably give it another go. Also, a better LFG system. This is a must for me, finding groups while leveling was almost impossible, we need some sort of LFG tool for dungeons. I don't want a solo grinder. Hopefully they do some serious advertising, they need the new Conan movie to be a hit and launch an ad campaign.

Actually I think the existing player finder tool is pretty decent, but it puts the onus of contacting others on the player, rather than providing some kind of insta-group feature.  Granted that it could be better, but this is one area that's weak in many, many games.

The grind has been addressed nicely with a recent patch.

If you consider having to do an /emote to progress a quest as a negative, perhaps you'd be more comfortable with Rift or WoW - games that play themselves for you so you don't have to think and simply click on whatever is glowy. :)

I personally love AOC. The only reason I'm not playing now is because I'm stuck overseas. Once I get back stateside where the internet connection is reliable, I will most definatly be playing again.

If Funcom can launch an Ad campaign, they cacn draw more players in. The game is leaps and bounds better then it was at launch. The game obviously isn't going to die, since Funcom is putting together a new expansion. Likely adding the Turan nation.

I played at launch (early access to be precise) and after a couple of months I quit due to the fact that the game was rushed out for release.

I tried it again when the game was having a lot of memory leak problems and therefore quit again.

I tried the free trial last month to see how it was and it was good enough for me to risk subbing again and all I can say is that I am glad I did as I am having a blast and without any problems. The server I play on is well populated and busy at all times of the day which was nice as I was a little dubious due to the stories of dead servers which I know there are a few of and a lot of players transfered to busier servers.

Now, you could go as far to say that I now love this game.

I really liked AoC but left when they decided to put in horse racing and freeze tag and story time instead of fixing there broken game.

    Playing: PO, EVE
    Waiting for: WoD
Favourite MMOs: VG, EVE, FE and DDO
Any person who expresses rage and loathing for an MMO is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae.

Not that I know off, but If you fear it, play on a PvE server instead. PvP servers in AoC is not the usual PvP server other might be used to.

Besides, there are more ppl playing on the PvE Servers atm.
