I'm not usually one for posting in any forums but felt compiled to do so on this rare occasion. I've been following this whole stupid mess (admittedly, not as thoroughly as I should have done)
I found the above statements (amongst others posted in this thread by several different people) the most pathetic thing I have read in a long time.
Why oh why should Sony give in (no I am NOT a Sony fan, but a corporate/business supporter no matter how big or small the company is) All Sony have done is provided a service to the public, yes they may have been lax in security (to err is human nature). Would you offer a business service and then expect people to take extras for free, costing you a financel loss in the process? No I doubt you would.
Sony giving in would just give the sad, pathetic, no life hackers an extension to their fat head egos (maybe they need a fat head to match the fat bellies). Hey, I'll justify this and come round your house to take what I want and then sue your behind off because you didn't give me what I wanted, it's practically the same situation.
These people (hackers) should grow up,stfu and have their butts beaten into next week. I hope they get caught, they deserve everything that will happen to them. I seriously hope some of their relations incomes/livelihoods are taking a knock unknowingly due to the damage the are causing. I have not owned a ps3 so I cant sue for crap to deal with a ps3, but its about their reputation, and their manor in which they are selling their PS3, I am quite sure that a number of people who have bought ps3's and then find out that they cant modify it, or play custom burned discs of any kind in it would be quite angry.
As far as what I could get sony for right now, a couple of days ago in another game totally unrelated to sony I got a notice saying that sony had been hacked, I was like big deal, and then I find out in my email days later after my information had been compromised that sony themselves did not tell me the moment my information was compromised, nor did they protect my identity or anything with encrypted information.
This information was also clearly accessable by any employee by sony, and the fact is that if a hacker could pull this off unless it was an inside job is that information of anyones could be leaked really easily based on all the news reports and their failure to keep their security, and apache updated properly which is what was said in the last news report I saw.
Maybe it is just me but I find that they failed to keep my information safe.
As a gamer with sony for at least 8 years maybe longer I will say that since the days of EverQuest ended all they have done is gone down hill with all their games anyways including EverQuest 2, DC Universe, Star Wars galaxies, they have totally ruined every game I have played from their service, not updated planet side to be even worth playing, and just really is the reason I had not touched my sony account in years, yet I come back to find that all my personal information has been leaked to some malicous group of hackers that could do god knows to people they hate in game, even go to their house and comit a crime or two on them, and god knows what else, just something to think about.
More than Likely I will just sit back, and watch sony, and the Media get feed to the sharks, and that is about all, because I sure as hell am not going to buy or use a sony product with the way this service is going not only because of the hacker attack but what I saw in those videos of what sony has done, droping lawsuits on people for modifying their own PS3 is just really stupid.

Without being personal or offensive but it is your ignorance on the matter only.
Encryption is not an answer and people bringing this up have no idea how encryption works. It is extremely complicated nor to say impossible to encrypt a database like this.
To encrypt any data, you need to a way to encrypt it. For this purpose you use a key. The problem is though, more encryption keys you hand out, less efficient the encryption will be.
It is like having only single copy of the keys to your doors. You stand at the front doors every morning, let everyone in and then in the afternoon you let everyone out. That's fine. The problem comes when you will be handing keys to from the front doors to everyone in the building, resulting in hundreds of copies flying around.
More keys you hand out, easier for unauthorized entity is to get one.
It is simplified example and does not take into account other numerous related issues, but that should give you a picture what the issue with encryption is.
Also, I am not saying it is impossible to find a solution, I am not a security expert, but I say that it isn't as simple as you think. I do believe that this will kick off small revolution in data security and e-commerce because those issues are serious these days and new security methods will need to be developed.
Saying that your personal information was 'clearly accessable by any employee by sony' is just trolling because you do not have anything to back up your claim and the statement as such is simply ridiculous.
If there was software not patched up to date solely due Sonys negligence is speculation only and even then, there is no evidence that patching would prevent the intrusion. Yet to say, Sony explicitly does not ensure your personal information safety in their EULA.
Forgive me for my overwhelming stupid observation but isn't it a little hard to hack into something that isn't even online? Good luck with that, unless the hackers are working for SOE, lol.
Well yeah I dont support illegal hacking of any type espicially when it comes to any type of computer information, or sensitive information, however there are hackers out there that will compromise security, go for revenges, for any, or no reason at all.
The part that pisses me off about sony is the fact that they go after people without reason for lawsuit against them, and then right after that they mysteriously get their DataBase compromised, and loose thousands each day they are not online, if not more.
When I purchase an Xbox 360, or a Ps3, or even a game from the store, the store doesnt come out, and say to me, hey you have to read this agreement and sign before you purchase the product, or you cant buy it, they just sell it to you, and the ps3 doesnt have a label on it that says you cant modify me, or the such, which really makes me angry that sony would go after people for modifying their own system, sure void the warranty some people dont care, and sometimes I modify my own hardware, and service my own stuff.
For example the IPad sucks, I will not buy one until they fix their illegal tracking in their Ipad because it can compromise a persons security and I was going to buy one until I found out it didnt support flash memory, so if I could hack an Ipad and add flash memory support I wouldn't want to get sued for that.
Okay so anyways yes Whoever did the hack needs to be caught, but the chances of actually finding all those involved are slim, and if it is anon behind this even if one or two are caught and proven guilty in a court/law, then others will just come for revenge down the line.
I see the computer as an open door.
If you do not upgrade your security software like sony did not do, and like they let their apache software get outdated as it says in this video, then they would never have been compromised, I mean its an open door that welcomes people to come in and screw with them.
I am not saying that this is the right thing to do, and even if I myself had access to any DataBase myself I would never abuse with this type of stuff, and any type of exploits I would immediately report to the right people but thats me.
I mean I myself use apache, and a good antivirus, and it is always updated every hour, and as secure as I can make it, now I do not challenge people to do hacks, or such on me, or my pc's, but I keep them as secure as I can.
All I can give is the advice that if it is anonymous, dont screw with them, I have spoke to people in various games that claim to be from such groups in the past, I have crossed paths of members, and griefers, and let me just say that my experience did not do too well, if the FBI, or Law wants to get involved with it and can get them its their problem, but honestly I think that even the FBI, and goverment, as well as sony, and possibly other companies have spies in them already working for anonymous, but that is just a theory.
** I saw someone make a post about World OF Warcraft compromise as well in one of these**
My WOW accounts that got compromised in the past were my fault actually, I had no authinticator on them at first, although Blizzard did restore everything almost 100% to what it was, and I added the Authinticator to it, it was one of my add-ons that had a keylogger and it came from curse gaming I am quite sure of that, but I quit WOW anyways due to the game play.

The coin has 2 sides. When you purchase PS3, you purchase a product, not a technology which is an intellectual property.
Same as remixing a song is illegal if you do not have a consent to do so. Same principle applies.

The quote is absolutely meaningless as it does not specify what type of patch/update, what servers, where in the infrastructure the server was placed, where is information comes from, etc.
It has no context, no value.
You might be surprised but 130 server farm running 50 apps isn't anything like your Apache you run at your home computer...

That's not all, that's the problem, they retaliated to the detriment of the average user, ie, me. As far as I'm concerned someone publically anounced having done something he knew would have consequnces then threw the dummy out of the pram when those actions happened.

This is not even close to a human shield.
Now come to think of it, it is quite funny to see first how people started climibing the barricades in Egypt when the government unplugged their Internet. Now it is the same thing but with only PS3 users. Suddenly people have time and motivation to do horrible things... be afraid, be very afraid.

From my persepctive it it is, they are ruining my past-time, they are banking on SOE's need to appease me in order to get what they want. It's blackmail with me as the bait. That's plain cowardly, you can see them as some kind of Robin Hood all you want but I have no delusion sorry.
What correlation is there to Egypt what nonsense, that was the people fighting for themselves, this is a bunch of tits fighting for their right to rip off someone elses engineering. They aren't fighting for me or a vast majority of the public, they're doing it for themselves and for money.

The riots in Egypt really took off after they denied access to Internet. Coincidence or no.
They have no money on the line and what do they have to gain? In any case, this is not a black & white issue. I don't consider laws that cannot be enforced proper laws. People have the right to modify their own game consoles. They bought it, they own it.
Right =/= Legal
Illegal =/= Wrong
This is a much bigger issue than you and your past time. It is a protest of in a way. And I fully support the message.

No, the don't. You bought the product, not the technology.
You cannot buy book, change a few details and say that you wrote it.
No ones is trying to mod a PS3 and say they created a PS3.5. Legally, I don't see how Sony can tell me I can't hack my PS3 to run Linux, as long as I keep it off their network. I own the hardware and should be able to do whatever I want with it again, as long as I keep the modded version off their network.

No, it isn't the same. Tunning your engine is enhancing the product in given, set parameters. That isn't a case of PS3.
Anonymous don't steal credit card infomation, they had access to the DDos previous to the attack but nothing else, and Sony have only brought this on themselves with there lame security. Hopefully this will teach them that security isn't a joke and needs to be updated and upgraded all the time to keep up with the latest threats.
How's the front door of your home? Is it lockpickable? Breakable? How about windows? Oh and one good way (I've heard) is to go through wooden walls if you have those. It takes a moment but not too long. Is there any weak spot in your house that would justify breaking into and making those that do it heroes?
There are lots of weak spots in my home, just like you describe. My defense is not giving someone a reason to bother circumventing the meager protections I have in place. It wouldn't be that hard, but why bother unless there's a reason? I'm not storing the Hope Diamond inside so the only reason someone would have is to be malicious. Good thing I don't go around pissing people off to the point that they would feel inclined to kick down my front door.

Hence 'planning'.

Every console gets cracked eventually. If it wasn't the guy now being chased, it would be someone else. Microsoft took this better than Sony did, thats for sure. IIRC they (MS) send the hacker a Windows phone too and asked if he could find any weaknessess on it. What did Sony do? -They painted their faces and went on a warpath. Anynomous retaliated. That is all.

These twats are the equvalent of the scum bags who use civilians to hide behind when the troops come knocking. They're trying to hold SOE to ransom by using us, well fuck that, I ain't about to be anyones human shield I will continue to use SOE because these sorts of ciminal cyber terrorists should not be encouraged.

If sony breaches their own ToS (removing OtherOS), nothing happens.
If and individual breaches their ToS (hacking the PS3 to revive OtherOS), they're brought to court.
Hackers were simply trying to bring back a feature that Sony wrongfully took from them.
Sony deserves this. Their customers, not so much.

Right =/= Legal
Illegal =/= Wrong
This is a much bigger issue than you and your past time. It is a protest of in a way. And I fully support the message.

No, the don't. You bought the product, not the technology.
You cannot buy book, change a few details and say that you wrote it.
No one did. It is equivalent of tuning the engine of your newly bought car. To make it better. Do car manufacturers sue these guys? -No they don't.

Care to explain how? Stating "facts" without any type of justification or explanation of why you feel that way really doesn't accomplish much.
