This game is not an MMO. Nor is it really Age of Empires. It has the worst features of both.
Or rather, it has bare bones AoE gameplay, layered with RPG gameplay that ruins balance and keeps you from playing with your friends. It's not worth wasting time on if you like Age of Empires. Its singleplayer "quests" are about 100 times worse than the campaigns with dialogue and cut scenes in old AoE games, and its mutliplayer is beyond broken.
It's AoE + a grind. There's nothing MMORPG about this other than a few RPG elements. There's no virtual world, you never play with more than about 4 other people. If people are calling this an MMO than I guess its safe to say any game with a grind and RPG mechanics is now called an MMO. Oh, have we fallen so far?
I wonder just how much MMORPG got paid for whip up this article for AoE online. It's so obvious it made all their point irrelevant as far as unbias review piece goes.
I see a lot of the comments are about item shop, but didnt they say thet would NOT make an item shop? I played beta and it is actually pretty good. I will be playing it when the beta is over, dont really feel like progressing twice. If they do introduce an item shop later on though, im outta there.
I refuse to try this game due to Microsoft Live, or whatever that thing is called. if I could get the game through any other service, Steam, D2D, etc, I'd jump on the chance, as I love Age of Empires. I draw the line at Microsoft Live though.
Age of Empires Online is fun to play with friends, though the cartoon-ish graphics are a slight turn-off. Though I'm not feeling the AOE charm in this game, it is actually pretty solid, though there are some irritating bugs and annoyances that needs to be sorted out ASAP.
Unfortunately, it's best feature (in my opinion) is also the game breaker. I'm referring to gear/equipment system. Basically, you have 4 ranks of gear that give bonuses to the units you attach them to, with the bonuses getting higher with the gear's rank. These items can be obtained from random treasure chests that appear around the map. A person loaded with Epic (highest gear rank) gear on their units will easily demolish a person with inferior equipment even if they're not as skilled. As a result, PVP has become more about gear than strategy.
Another big issue is the game's messed up connectivity; sometimes you disconnect/get dropped without warning, other times the co-op mode just doesn't fire up. I'm guessing it's got something to do with LIVE.
All in all, worth a try if you're a strategy lover. As long as the premium content won't disfigure the balance in the final release of the game, I'll continue to play Age of Empires Online for a some time to come.

I am enjoying it so far, but I just cant seem to get past the defend 2 towns for 30 mins quests
Use wall to wall off section of the map and use enemys pathing AI to your advantage.
thanks that worked well
