14 DAY TRIAL= NO TUTORIAL?

pupurunpupurun Member UncommonPosts: 561

I just started my trial at MO...and i am suprised that there is not an inch of information the minute you spawn your player in game.Distances are quite long for a new player start running around interacting with the few NPCs...So whats wrong with this picture? Is it me? I mean i didnt expect a full tutorial but nothing at all?

there is nothing wrong with the picture.

MO prides it'self in doing things differently then most other mmos. you are supposed to feel lost, and you are supposed to learn by exploring not by reading a tutorial. go explore, try things, ask people, inteact with things, enjoy that feeling of not knowing what the hell you are doing or what you are supposed to do.

use that brain instead of looking for that "go to A, interact with B, gather X ammount of C, return to D"........

That is part of what makes this game revolutionary, not many games are ahead of the curve enough to sabotage themselves by designing a trial such that the player spends more time floundering and less time getting exposure to the game.  Starvault is just beyond revolutionary.

it's a ffa full loot mmo so yea there are many of those morons.....just stay in ghost form and watch him untill he gets bored and leaves. or just go find a different priest further away or inside a city were there are guards.

Its just how this game is meant to be played. Log in with no idea what to do, "do what you want."

It is definitely not the type of game to play if you want to jump into the gameplay. This is one of those games you pick up when youre super insane bored and just want to explore a world and take advantage of the "do what you want" thing.

    So far i am impressed!

Impressed by the fact that most NPCs are floating or sitting on mid air while their chair is next to them.....

Impressed by the fact that game client has crashed to me 3 times in 30 mins

Impressed how i actually realise i had to die after i was already dead in order to become alive again. All i had to do is( while being dead) talk to a live priest.....Bye bye Immersion.

Lets see some MO more before we reach into a conclusion....

But those are all revolutionary gameplay features too, which I'm sure DAWN will revolutionize even further.

    what is DAWN!?

Yea there are alot of technical problems here and there, but more MMO's need to be like Mortal. I literally cant find an MMO i want to subscribe to anymore with whats out because im getting tired of the theme-park, hold your hand model. Its got a very steep learning curve, but games like this are far more rewarding.

    Currently Playing : Rift, EQ2
Has Played: Anarchy Online, SWG(Pre NGE refugee), DAoC, EQ1, EQ2, Lineage 2, CoH, CoV, Horizons, AoC, FFXI, FFXIV, Aion, WoW, DCUO, Matrix Online, Vanguard, Tabula Rasa, LotRo, Fallen Earth, Shadowbane, EQoA, ArchLord

Dawn is the first  MO "expansion" (aka large patch) that's supposed to come out sometimes this month. some of the new features will be horse breeding, fog, some sort of eating mechanics, and some sort of long lasting wounds mechanics, as fas as i undestand.

the last major ptach scewed up server stability for more then a month, so fun times ahead :)

The problem is that they have taken it to the opposite extreme.   They literally drop you into the game in such a state that you do not even have the skill to sit and rest on the ground until you learn it from an NPC trainer. Even though your character is 30 he apparently has not learned to jump yet... and he seems to have amnesia because he has no clue at all about the town he grew up in.  You cannot even run for more than 2 seconds before getting tired...  The end result is a horrendous experience for new players.  It's not "hardcore"... it's just poorly designed and implemented.

Now.. one of the huge improvements promised for DAWN is a revamped new player experience including a tutorial.  Hopefully they can backup their words with actions.

No.. it's not hardcore... at all.  A 30 year old character that doesn't know how to sit down.. or jump over a 2 inch rock... that's not hardcore at all.  The same guy who has lived in this town all his life has no idea about anything around him or in town.  Thats not hardcore either.  It's just poor design/implementation.  SV has admitted this and are adding a tutorial to the game.  Does that make them carebears?  No.. it means they realized the current design results in a horrendous new player experience and a pitiful retention rate (while adding NOTHING positive) .  If you really care about the game you would encourage them to continue to make the game more beginner friendly in REALISTIC ways.. like being able to run for more than 2 seconds at a time... knowing how to sit down...  maybe being able to jump over a pebble.  That has nothing to do with hardcore or carebear.. that's just bad game design.

DAWN promises to change this... we will see if they deliver.

This game is a train wreck. Didn't you do any research before trying the game? I guess thats what a trial is for but still, you sound surprised or something.

I honestly don't mind that so much. What bothers me about it is that the only thing my character knew how to do when I started the game was swing his arms and move his legs. At least that ferret thing I killed seemed to know how to eat.

Well "quite a few" I guess would depend on your definition of the term... but regardless..  liking it or not.. nothing that I listed makes a game "hardcore".  This is of course why SV has acknowledged the issue and are promising it will be fixed in the highly anticipated DAWN expansion.  It doesn't make them "carebears".. it means they understand they made a mistake and are trying to correct it.  We will see if they are successful.

SV has promised that they will fix the lag/desynch issues soon.  Please be sure to come back in a few days and give us your updated impression!

Train wreck, that sums it up. Agree. This game is well known for what it is.
Best quote from this thread. "It's not "hardcore"... it's just poorly designed and implemented." that sums it up well.
I love when people keep saying lets see what they do! Let's wait and see! Oh come on! These people have been full-to-bloody-bursting with empty promises since day 1, how long can you make apologies for them? That old saying immediately comes to mind, fool me once...

As far as I can tell, the only people saying how awesome and imperitive the expansion is in this thread are the same people who constantly voice their hate for the game...  most the fans of the game are looking forward to the expansion, but playing the actual game in the meantime.

... looks like you owe the advanced haters here thanks, they're working hard to set up your jabs.

you know what I call MOs lack of tutorial? ... stupid design choice. It is wrong (to avoid stronger expressions due to moderation) to claim that lack of tutorial is equal to hardcore, nothing prevents a game being both hardcore and user friendly. However in Mos case they lack both experince and time to make it such.
