It seems to me that Switching Worlds for many has become a bit of a hot topic.
Personally, I think it is ridiculous to expect this. I think it was great that GW1 was able to have everyone on one server. However, the way GW2 has been designed, I dont think thats a viable option.
How could you ever have server balance when for free and with not much of a cooldown, you can just switch worlds.
I dont see how people have a problem with being stuck on a server. Most MMOs dont have server transfers available at launch, let alone free. And there are usually very significant cooldown periods. In WoW it was 60 days I believe (may have changed)
I think they should make it a paid character transer. They dont want people hopping to winning servers, solved.
A game that only makes money off of box sales---well now they can make a bit more.

I thought I heard somewhere that this would be free anyway?
I wouldn't want a paid transfer, although I wouldn't mind a cooldown.

No thanks, they make plenty mula on their item mall. I'm all for a time limit but charging would be gouging.

I think the only issue is The Mists. Maybe only provide a cooldown in participating there. Everywhere else it's not an issue.
Free with a cooldown. Not sure about the cooldown time though.
If you want to change while in cooldown then it should be paid.
I dont see it as gouging. What other BIG BOY mmos let you do this, for free. I know its not like they have to move a mountain to transfer your character, but it still a service they provide for you.
I just think it would be too chaotic. People constantly would be going where the grass was greener.
Whats to stop all the leet PvPers to end up on one server?
The developers have already said switching servers will be easy, so that makes it less likely that it will be a paid service.
The only official statement on this topic I know is the following:
"Since every server is always involved in a WvW match of some sort, we need to allow players to transfer servers during a WvW matchup. However, since it would not be fair to allow people from other worlds to influence the balance of the battle by constantly moving between servers, we will impose some restrictions for a short amount of time on players who switch servers."
Now I just hope that the short amount of time is long enough to keep people from switchting to winning servers. If the restriction is only 1 or 2 Hours people will simply level a toon this time or do housework etc. and then join the winning team.
In my opinion you should be restricted to one server per week for World vs World because the fights last for one week if I remember correctly.
My idea, is I think that when you start GW2, you should pick a 'home server'.
Your WvW rewards (Bonuses to the PvE content) only apply to when you're on your home server.
This means you could visit your friends in other servers, or even go WvW in other servers (As long as it isn't for a server that your server is fighting against), but it's only for fun, and doesn't benefit you. In fact, you'd be a little crippled compared to being on your own server.
Maybe let people switch home servers, but on a MASSIVE cooldown (2-3 months), and charge for that (... and maybe not let people switch home servers to any of the top WvW servers)
This way you'd have the benefit of being able to play with your friends if you really want to, but the advantages of staying on your home server (Which is also the server you'd default to logging into) means most people will stick to their server... and if they want to get any benefits from WvW, they'll have to go do it at their home server. So it'll still build community, without locking people into a little tiny area and making it really rough playing with friends.
I think you should be able to transfer to a server for free, with something like a 48hr transfer cooldown, as a visitor. So you can group with friends and do PvE content (e.g. Dungeons) with them and structured PvP but whenever you try to enter WvWvW, you'll only be able to play on your home/original server. So in order to transfer fully, you'll have to pay a small transfer fee. Maybe they could also give 1 free full server transfer aswell.
GW2 team do things how they want, not how all the "BIG BOY mmos" do it.

Ever stop to ask why other games require you to pay for it, or have a cooldown on it? Character transfers can't possibly take that much of the administration's time to pull off, to warrant the high price that most games have. There's not much point to it other than milking the customer that much more.
Why would you want to force a player to stay on a server whose population is screwed (or whatever that player's problem with the server is)? How would free switching have any negative impact on you as a player? Particularly if they are coming from a gimped server where they would presumably be gear-impaired. That would put you at an advantage over said player right? Such a decision only ends up benefitting them, as it retains customer loyalty and improves the appearance that they care about the customer.
I dont think that servers work like that in GW2. You dont need someone from support to transfer your toon. Itll be an automatic process, just like now in GW1 by going from Europe to American districts.
But with GW2 Ill expect a cooldown period for WvWvW balance reasons.
Wouldn't it be nice to have one company out there that doesn't gouge like the "BIG BOYS" do?
I think so.

That sounds like an interesting idea.
I think the Guild Wars fanbase are a spoiled bunch and the devs caved to unrealistic childish demands to appease GW1 Fanbase that had a similar mechanic. This isnt guild wars 1 however, GW2 is a full fledged MMO.
There a smart bunch and they have already committed themselves, I am sure they will think of something that makes sense. My ultimate fear is that there is so much moving, that you dont even get to make any true rivalries, and people who you like and expect to be on are doing something else, somewhere else. Guilds that you got used to seeing, nope there on another server now. I would hate to see that. It loses the sense of community imo.
Again, what stops all the leet PvP'ers to all end up on one server, dominating everyone in every WvWvW match?
It's still not gouging. I think its an unreasonable request/demand/feature to constantly be transferring worlds. Every other mmo I played, it cost to transfer servers. And I was happy to pay, but it wasnt often.
To me the sense of community gets lost. In a way like being in a city where the people change everyday. You go to the same coffee shop but you never see the same owner, the same waitress...always someone different, constantly.
I'd be surprised if it was free. Everything they say is said through the filters of marketing, any nice thing they can say about GW2 must be said and server transfer being free, besides easy, would be a nice thing. As in "but wait, there's more! it will be free!".
It just could be that they haven't decided yet but still I believe they will charge for it.
I'd rather have it for free though.
The closer the instanced PvP comes to online shooters in terms of match-making, with dedicated servers that have different options from which you are able to choose from freely, the better, in my opinion. I vote free, anytime all the time. Especially for games with very large numbers of players.
The WvW, maybe not so much. I do like the idea of server pride, community coordination, and heated rivalries. But, at the same time, who's to say you can't try and locate some of your friends/rivals like in dedicated servers for these things?
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
That wouldn't happen given their nature. There might be some number that want to work together, but there would also be a significant number that want to fight them, seeing as true PVPers don't get a whole lot of satisfaction out of fighting non-PVPers. Sure there is always some initial hilarity when facing the truly inept, but eventually it becomes a question of almost-griefing vs. true competition. They'd probably balance themselves out.
Oh, it looks like Bobby Kotick decided to use his forum account. You should also learn how to make a better poll. If there is a cooldown, I don't see why it should be 45 days or 14 days. If there is a cooldown, it should be a period of time that is right for the game, even if that time happens to be 31 hours (for example).

I think that this is entirely incorrect. One company doing something different doesn't entire fanbase is "a spoiled bunch" and their expectations are "unrealistic" and "childish."
I'd tread carefully from here on out if I were you.

That's really uncalled for and certainly untrue.
If you want to be charged so badly, why not just make a direct donation? Just because we don't want to be nickled and dimed for something that's already free doesn't make us spoiled and childish.

I agree with paid tranfers, this would give them another source of money that dont really affects gameplay but yet it is useful and would limit switching worlds (WvWvW remember?, how would you feel about your server emptieing out every end of the week?)

The leet PVPers from GW1 will see WvWvW as something casual. Its also a hybrid of PVE and PVP, with PVE goals.
The 5vs5 areans will be their main game. It will also be the most balanced of all PVP in GW2. Just like in GW1 where 8vs8 was the main PVP game and alliance battle just something for PVEers to enjoy (not my thoughts, but their take on this anyway).
Also Guild Wars 2 PVP will still be about Guild vs Guild.
