Well, Haven and Hearth has permadeath and it seems to be pretty popular, at least considered it's a 2D browser game.
When you die in H&H you don't lose everything; your next character will inherit some of your stats and your property (not really sure how it works, never got into H&H). So it's not like you'll have to start from scratch after losing a high-end char, more like an extremely severe death penalty.
I believe Salem will feature a similar system; it's the same devs after all, and in many respects Salem looks like H&H2.
Yes, your "descendant" will inherit all of your property except for what was on your corpse, plus an unknown amount of your skills. So its a sort of hybrid permadeath. I'm looking forward to it, as someone else said if you don't want permadeath then play any of the other 99% of mmo's out there. I miss the days of mmo's have consequences to death, ala EQ1 corpse runs. Heck I'd even take loss of exp at this point instead of nothing which is what we have now in AAA titles.
If I remember correctly, people would game the system by putting LP (learning points) into their villages, then when they die and their land passes down to the new character, they would just decrease the size of their land and reclaim those LP. My memery is shot, so that could be wrong though.
But, I'm down for perma death. When I played I had like 2 characters. My main crafter stayed in the base while the hunter/gather when out and explored, collected, huntered, whatever. I really didn't care if that one died since I had my main and of course, you get back a bit of the dead characters skill.
I like the idea of permadeath; I'll be playing this one for sure. One issue with the permadeath thing though - say you get a crapload of people playing, and those people die frequently. Have to make a new name, right? So after half a year or so, will we see names like Gimli5, or perhaps DarkPonythe22nd? Geez - I'm gonna have to write up a list of 20 or so names to pick from when (not if - I know it's gonna happen) I die. Should last me the first week or so.

Character progression does exist. If your character dies, your descendant takes up where you left off, except they need to build up their skills again. It's kind of the opposite of Eve. You keep all your stuff, but lose all your skills. No real word yet on how long skills take to build up, or if there is a point at which they become useful.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Permadeath wil be one of the reasons I will be playing this game. Love the concept they have with the game. Can't wait to get more information on it.
<.< you.....
I played a game with permadeath before but it had a legacy system where you could come back as your child which made permadeath pointless.
This isn't a signature, you just think it is.
