I've been away from the genre now for some 8 months. And by away from the genre I mean away from it, all related media and any associated websites. I just had it when Rift launched, same old, same old... So anyway, just thought I'd pop my head in here and ask is there anything actually happening? I was over at Massively.com and there doesn't seem to be any new release dates coming up, just seems to be the same story when I left. Eternal development cycles followed by a release to a jaded public and back to the hype machine once more. So what have we got, is it still GW2, STar Wars, Secret World and Tera? Anything happening with them? Anything new coming since?
This genre seems to have slowed to a snails pace in terms of content, release and hype. Nothing seems to happen anymore...

Well there is the 38 studio's project, ArcheAge, and Firefall all have my eye in addition to the games you listed. The Secret world keeps releasing new info on their game, so is ToR and Guild Wars 2. Tera has released in Korea, so there is a lot of new info on that game to be found as well.
I think the genre is moving at about the same pace it always has, perhaps a bit faster, we get a LOT more free to play games that come out all the time now, and about 3-4 releases of an attempted "AAA" MMO every year now. Which is more than it was back when this genre was just gearing up.
I guess you're right, but it stills feels pretty stagnant compared to other genres. Which I guess it is to some degree. In all honesty I've been waiting for a good MMO for years on end now. Whereas most 'other' games you can expect to get a decent one every few months, if not once or twice a year depending on how picky you are - MMOs seem to be far less frequent in both time and quality.
