Doesn't mean you can't play on Eastern servers, maybe someone will come up with a mod to transform the language to English or something. Closing down something that isn't making you money is a smart thing to do nonetheless.
I can't imagine it would be terrible difficult to take the language files out of the current version and apply them to the Korean version.
Then again, considering how old the game is it actually might be incredibly difficult. Who knows?
I remember playing Aion on the CN servers and the client I had downloaded had English translations up to a certain level. So it -is- possible.
I'am still pissed i missed this game when it launched.. ah well, looks like i can chalk up another game i'll never get to play like Hellgate london, Tabula Rasa, and APB even tho i might still get a chance now that its F2P.
Can you still play Hellgate London single player? I was fun even offline.
I don't think the client tried to connect to the internet unless you chose the MP option, so you should be able to play the single player with no problems.
Bummer! I played Lineage a few years back for a while. Even though the graphics wher quite simple there was a LOT to love about this game. I have been secretly hoping that they might turn it into a FTP game instead of closing it down. This is truly a loss to us all, especially anyone who didn't get to experience it.
Wow... Sad news for the people who really enjoyed L1. In my time playing the game (tried it out for a month; was too spoiled by L2 by that point), I spoke to many people who absolutely loved the game and wouldn't be leaving 'til they pulled the plug.
To the people making remarks about "NCSoft takes another MMO offline"... Ummm... Sorry to rain on your parade... but... might want to take a step back and actually learn the situation before you start commenting on it.
1. L1 has been running for about a decade now, in the West and East.
2. It maintained an active player base in the West at least up 'til now... 10 years is nothing to sneeze at for any MMO. That's a very long and successful run for one of these games.
3. It's still alive and well in the Eastern market. So, no, the game hasn't "died" and NC hasn't "cancelled it". They're shutting down the Western servers, that's it. The game is still up and will continue running in the Eastern market.
So... Yeah... It sucks for its players in the Western market. But the game will "live on", so to speak, in its Eastern market.

I am a bit shocked with the news. I haven't played Linage myself, but now I'll never know what it will be like (don't speak Korean, so that's no option for me )
AAside from teh news of closure, I have to say that NCSoft once again gives a good refund to the current players (even betetr then when they closed down TR).
Indeed, it's even better, they're not only giving out free digital copies with two months of game time but CE/extra stuff.
Though I did enjoy the timing of Tabula Rasa, it went out and NCSoft went on to refund people with the Collector's Edition of an unreleased game at the time. I got to play Aion from the beginning by paying nothing.
And anyone complaining about NCSoft shutting off the NA servers for a 10+ year old game really needs to check the facts and understand what a great run this game had, and that it's not actually over since it's only going offline on the West, and they're not even going to change business models (as in going hybrid like LOTRO or featuring a more aggressive F2P cash shop as most korean MMOs do).
They need a new slogan like NCSoft we close more mmogs than most devlopers make.
SOE holds that as a title.
Always bad to hear an MMO close down. Never tried Lineage but I did try Lineage 2 and didn't care for it. I played TR from launch til close. Hoping Firefly will at least come up to par with TR.
EDIT: Firefall*
Care to list all the MMOs SOE has closed down? The Agency doesn't count, it was never released.

Yea, you can play hgl in singleplayer but it is not the same without the Wilds etc.
If you do play it then download the mod that allows extra stash and better drops, more monsters and level 55. I think the site for it is in the hgl forums.
well its a very old game now.. and hell its its not maknig them money then its totally the right move to shut it down... NCSOFT are a business and out to make money like any other.
The game is totally outdated now, even L2 is outdated...
I could only wish my next mmo would last as long as 10yrs. It was a good run indeed.

I had a hunch that bringing up SOE would draw at least one clingly fanboy boy. Sorry, an unpopular update to a game that was already hemorraghing players isn't on the same level as shutting a game down.
I never played Lineage, not my cup of tea, but it's sad to hear that such a long-time MMORPG is closing the doors.
BUT we all know (or should know) that companies are here for the profit; when something is no longer profitable, it's only logical that they shut it down.
In fact, I think that NCSoft's approach to this closure is pretty straight and this is something I would love to see from more companies.
I mean, they close in 2 months, they are straight about the reasons, they offer refunds, reopen all closed accounts and offer events till the final day.
Wish I could get this for all MMORPGs I play/will play.
Why would anyone take a chance and play a NCSoft title? Knowing for a fact that it will eventually disappear as soon as the numbers go down. Heck I can go back and play my UO characters or my AC1 characters still if I wanted to. I just do not understand their line of reasoning.
Basically I just do not play any of their games because of this.

The shut downs of NCsoft's titles were foreseeable long before the call was ever made. Dungeon Runners never picked up, niether did Exteel for the most part. Tabula Rasa crashed after launch, mostly because the leveling was rather fast and there was no end-game content, and Auto Assault was just...Auto Assault.
Guild Wars isn't going anywhere soon because the overhead costs are too low to make the game not profitable. City of Heroes/Villains still sells well (2% of NCsoft's income) while Lineage 1 and 2, and Aion (worldwide) are NCsoft's biggest profit margins.
If anything is going to shut down, it will likely be Lineage 2 in the West next. NCsoft has long since downsized to one server in North America, and I'm not entirely sure what the population looks like.

L2's population is still decent in the West. If you go to Giran you'll see about 200+ shops at any time of day ('cept after restarts of course). Now that may not seem important, but most of those shops are an Alt Account used solely to sell/buy/craft.
I would love for Lineage III to start up again...but I don't think that'll happen; indefinitely shelfed, just like Starcraft: GHOST.

Pavlovian response I think...
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
I must agree. Most games can only hope for that kind of success

Time for them to start working hard on Lineage 3 I guess...

The should have shut down Lineage II. L1 was far superior in every way except graphics.

My first MMO I ever truly got into and aside SWG Pre-CU probably the best.
Tis a shame to see it finally close in the west but it had one hell of a run a decade+ for a "asian grinder"

By your logic all the MMOs that are a decade old would have to be shut down just because they are too old.
However, there would be an outrage if that were to happen, since there are loyal players, and the games still pay the bills.
