If you really want to put a spin on things with DoT spells, you should take a look at the Reaver warrior soul. It's a tank, but with DoT's...it really was awesome to tank 6 mobs and just DoT them all up without having to worry about being squishy. It also helped with really fast leveling.
im DL the game now should i start off as necro or warlock? sorry newb here
Having done this myself a few times I'd
Get Necro as your first soul for the pet which gives you good damage at that point
Warlock as your second soul (which you get still in the tutorial zone by the way) and put points mainly in Warlock at first because - you get a couple self-heals that way and the ability to DOT multiple foes for a pseudo AoE early.
This will make leveling pretty easy at first.

This is what i play and i never die and can prolly take on 10mobs at a time.. With festering wounds + plague bearer you can spread a DoT to up to 12 different mobs that will heal you for 50% of the dmg it does.. So not only do i usually kill 10 mobs at a time i most likley come out of the battle with full health, and it helps when you get ganked.. Today i got ganked by a cloaked defiant when i had like 5 mobs on me, i simply hit Festering Wounds + Plague Bearer and used the mobs as walking pots while i DPSed the defiant lol.. Was funny taking down a defiant 2 lvls higher then me while having a ton of mobs on my ass.
Currently Playing: Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta

As far as I've seen in the mage the it's the Necro/Warlock combo. It does some pretty amazing DoT.
