Seriously, I have played MMORPGS for 14 years always on the Linux platform ( I know not supported, blah blah blah only ubers use windows or mac os. ) use Wine.   Never and I'll repeat Never have I ever seen an outstanding team ever dedicate atleast 3 minutes of their time to respond to a LINUX thread nor spend time investigating why the current Game doesnt work on Wine/Crossover/Cedegea as in this thread.   http://forums.riftgame.com/showthread.php?188265-Disallowing-play-using-WINE .  Overall it shows them that they care about the miminalst of players because I am sure only 100-1000 players play the game through wine but they are willing to respond and TRY to fix a bug that is nor their problem.  Kudo's here.

Btw; I am on n off player and noway a fanboi of Rift but I do like the Developer Team.

    [Mod Edit]

To the OP it's nice to see Trion addressing this issue.

I will agree that Trion is a team of honest developers that genuinely care about their customers - I got their impression from extensively playing the Rift beta events. Even if the game itself didn't appeal to me, being only an expression of something that has been done before, the people behind it seemend competent and trustworthy.

Thus, it comes as no surprise that the Trion folks would unnofficially support an unsupported platform, even if just for the good of a few hundred paying customers.

First of all I want to say that Mono's comment is as valid as anyone elses.  In fact I find it objectionable that people would see fit to try to silence his comment.  That said, Rift is a time filler until better MMO's come out for a lot of players.

'To each he's own', doesn't support pointless comments to this topic.  If he wants to say how, 'average' the game is there's plenty of other topics on this forum for that, contribute your 'insights' there.

As for the OP it's nice that they do support Linux.  Even on their 'approved' guides there's one their linking to getting the game to run on a Linux system.  I'm a big fan of Linux in general and although it's obviously clunky it's great for the future of PC development and Trion are smart to embrace potential customers for that format.

Honestly, I might despise this game more than anyone else and I clicked this thread because it was on the recent feed on the front page but once I saw this wasn't talking features of the game, I'd have to agree that opinions on gameplay don't really belong in this thread.

It's kind of like going to an Ipod thread to talk about your opinion of Safari.

While I am not a fan of RIft i do think that Trion as a compnay is great. Companies like Cryptic should learn from them. The market is now saturated with MMO's and you cant treat your cutomers like crap.

And yes i am aware that i play a game from one of the worst culprits of treating there player base like crap.......so feel free to not listen to me. If another company came out with a game like Vanguard I would leave SOE in a heart beat.

    Playing: PO, EVE
    Waiting for: WoD
Favourite MMOs: VG, EVE, FE and DDO
Any person who expresses rage and loathing for an MMO is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae.

Looking at kittens>rift.  I mean i am a special snowflake and everyone has opinion and mine is special.  Just like yours.  Everyones opinion is special so nobody can talk about anyones special opinion.

But I assume you would have at least a little experience of checking out kittens first?

that's your opinion, to make a blanket statement like Rift is a time filler is folly. Say that as IMHO, cause it is. To some of us, we're enjoying the game for what it is without any anticipation as to what may come. As to what may come, who the f,  knows, until then, I'm enjoying the ride.

If this company ACTUALLY cared for the "niche" folks they wouldn't have made a cheap WoW clone.

I'm pretty sure the average forum goer understands that these are all our opinions, specifically on things that can't be proven as factual.

I also have to agree with thebigchin11, that the game is both a stepping stone for the average player and for Trion themselves. They are already developing other MMORPGs, I think Rift was just testing the waters with a safe game.

.. But in a good way.

Judging by the amount of free trials Trion is giving away, it looks like even those 100-1000 players could help make profit

Glad to see you're getting help. I tried to run RIFT in Linux and it worked but the performance was abysmal. Good luck!

Agreed. While i'm enjoying Rift, loving it during the world events and invasions in fact, I can't see me playing it in sixth months time, and certainly won't be playing when GW2 comes out. A shame really, as it is a decent game, yes maybe for casual PVEers like myself and not the hardcore raiders and PVPers. It's come out at a good time, as there really isn't anything new and decent around at the minute, so it's caught some support. Like I said though, the test will come when it;'s up against a big new release of quality like GW2 or ToR.

This made me laugh .If an mmo does'nt give away free trials within the first few months people accuse them of hiding something . If they do you get comments like this . The games was doing fine before the free trial started in fact I experianced waits to get in sometimes because some servers were full and I did'nt start playing untill the game  into its second month so it cant all be people on the first months included period . While its not perfect and definatly a derivative it is by far the best mmo to be released since WoW which is why its doing pretty well . Glad they support linex though . I did try it ages ago but I found it to be a bit of a pain in arris . Much easier to get a cheap oem windows through ebay .
