This game is targeted at a decidedly male audience. The type of woman that would enjoy this game, isn't going to give a rat's arse about not being able to play a female character.
This game is targeted at a decidedly male audience. The type of woman that would enjoy this game, isn't going to give a rat's arse about not being able to play a female character.
Most of the people that female characters matter to are actually male players.
Combine those male players with female players, like my gf who won't touch a RPG unless she can play as a female, and you actually do have a large percentage of the audience.
15-25% female players, 15-25% guys who prefer to play as female characters, and I'd estimate upwards of 40 or even 50% of thier potential audience that they neglect by making us play as Geralt.
That's not even getting into the percentage of people who just want to be able to make their own character, at least in name and appearance, gender aside.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
I dont get the appeal of the witcher series, geralt isa boring dude, the combat isnt that exciting, and the conversation is flat. I think the witcher is more of a german pride thing like stalker then anything. Because i beat both witcher and DA, and DA is much better. As for DA2 and witcher 2 i have both, and dislike both equally.
Geralt boring? Combat not exciting? Witcher is German? Dialogue flat?
Are you sure you weren't playing Gothic 3? Its almost a pure concensus among major review outlets that Witcher 1 was a very well-made game with an original character, great combat, and a well-crafted story (since it is, you know, a novel). It had a few issues (cant jump, loading screen frustration) but when it came to the meat and potatoes of RPG elements, that game had it in spades and more.

I play the game myself, and that is how i feel about it, the game is good. But there are better games out there, I tried playing through the witcher 1 twice, and i got bored half way through both times. I just stopped caring.

Have not had a chance to play either game, but I do know Witcher 1 was pretty good and from the information ive been hearing regarding DA2 and W2, Witcher 2 sounds like the dominating game. It does everything DA2 does but better.
Except let you create your own character. That's huge, IMHO.
I dont see that as much of an issue. There have been plenty of games where I was unable to create my character and that doesnt make the game any less fun. I was able to create my character in both ME1 and ME2 but I didnt care to because it doesnt matter. The only person who will see my created character is me, and what my character looks like has no effect on how the game is played (unlike games like Fable, to a degree). So if all the other features are there then why does it matter if I can change his hairstyle and make his chin more defined? It doesnt. If being able to create a character is your only selling point for DA2 over W2 then I think W2 has it beat. Additionally, if you being unable to create your character is a game breaking thing then I think you should reevaulate why you play these games because you can still create a personal story different frmo other people.
Physical character appearance in single player RPGs is nearly pointless and should not be a reason to decide to buy a game or not.

Wow, before we write you off as super lame and beyond saving, I would ask who you find to be not boring? Name characters that you find appealing, please.
To call Geralt boring is pretty insane and I have to wonder what it would take to punch your clock.

The Witcher 2 is a masterpiece in gameplay, graphics and story,it eats anything BioWare have bought out or any other RPG dev team in recent times of dinner.
BioWare step aside and let us euros show you how it's really meant to be done. Great price, free downloadable content and a great dev team.
Both DA2 and W2 are the same "new trend". Both set you in very bleak and dark worlds where essentially all parties and factions are only variants of evil. Or mad. Or both. In both I had this feeling like "why the heck am I here doing this instead of just going away?" And I didn't really have an answer besiders "I paid for it". I miss the heroic and positive elements. On top W2 just has way to excessive swearing, which I don't like. You don't have to use so much swearing just to create a dark world. At least I see that as chilish and more an amateurish idea of "dark".
Both are not real RPGs anymore and essentially have betrayed the RPG idea. They are pure action games. You can't pick races, in W2 you can't even pick class and visual look of your char. W2 is more an action game like the "Legacy of Kain" games or the like. That both have WAY too many LONG cutscenes and dialogues doesn't make it an RPG, but it just makes it less interesting. So much endless blah blah, look how dark I am because I can swear.
Both have the same hack and slash ideology in their combat which doesn't really have to do with RPGs anymore.
And both are terribly bleak realities I wouldn't want to live in if I get paid for it!

Dragon Age Origins was better than The Witcher 1. I didn't play DA2 and will likely not play The Witcher 2 until it comes down in price, the entire Witcher Series is a little overrated to me, but then again, so is the DA series.
In my opinion ME 1/2 and 3 are currently and will be better than both entire series of DA and The Witcher.

Its been a long time since i saw a PC game where keybinding was not built into the game
I cant really compare it to DA2 as I havent seen that game for myself
From what I have seen on a friends machine, W2 is ok, the interface and weird wheel thing seemed a bit consoly though, but its not really my genre I am more into sci fi than fantasy games
As ME3 isnt out thie year then W2 will probably and quite rightly win best RPG of the year, but ME3 would of beat it if it wasnt delayed

I like what I see from W2, but if skyrim isn't delayed there is no way that W2, ME3, or DA2 could ever beat it for that award.
Also, ME2 and ME1 were terrible RPGs, no way ME3 would be able to beat a heavy hitter like Skyrim.

This partly your fault for not paying attention to what you were getting. At least in the case of Witcher 2. It's pretty evident what sort of world the Witcher is set in, and that it is not going to be all sweetness and light. I see it as a reaction to all the generic, heroic fantasy that abounds. As for the cussing, well, in my experiance there seems to be a lot of that in real world as well. You know, there's a phrase called 'Cussing like a sailor'. I think that goes for soldiers and warrior types, in general, as well.
You are totally entitled to your preferences in games. You just don't get to determine that every game caters to them. Publishers are always going to be making their own decisions on the best approaches. Research them, to find ones that mesh well with you.
As for the RPG thing, categories are, essentially, moving targets. In a perfect world the category choice would give you a clear idea what you were getting, so you could match it to your interests, but it's not that cut and dried. Look at music, there's all these categories, then sub categories, then niche sub categories, all trying to define a particular 'sound'. And even then things don't match up all that well.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
Originally posted by jpnole I am definitely dropping my Rift playing time for this. In fact, I may just give up on mmos all together for now. W2 has reinvigorated me with that passion I had playing single player rpgs back in the 80s and 90s.
I agree 100%! Not only did I cut back on my RIFT playing (patch 1.2 was a game killer) because of the Witcher2, but yes! The Witcher 2 makes you want to play single player of coop RPGs and never ever play a MMO ever again.
Admittedly I have not played w2. I only played a small portion of W1, and I found the voice acting, combat, story, and gameplay fairly lacking.
I don't think it's hard to be "better" then DA2. If the W2 has more then 6 zones and more then 3 different small buildings to go into. Of course, if every building you go into is the same, that sorta makes it equal eh lol. I heard the graphics are great and you don't see SUPER LOW RES graphics everywhere like in da2.
From what I understand, the Witcher series is more about sex and that makes it better also? <.<

ME series doesn't compare favorably to DA or W series as it's sci-fi and the RPG elements are heavily stripped down to make the game appeal to console folk.
Both are not real RPGs anymore and essentially have betrayed the RPG idea. They are pure action games. You can't pick races, in W2 you can't even pick class and visual look of your char.
I really have come to the conclusion that role players need to start broadenign their horizons and start taking some acting and improv classes.
As an actor you take on a role. Your lines, for the most part are already written.
yet you can see one version of "the importance of being earnest" and another version of "the importance of being earnest" and get two completely different performances.
Why? Because the actors have applied their idea of what that characters does and how he does it. They have taken the role and made it their own.
Every single one of these games shouldn't have to give players umpteen millions different ways to create a character. As long as they give the player choices.
Now, you say you like the heroic type of choices. I do as well. But I also like exploring darker paths. There are different types of heroes other than the tried and true "knight in shining armor".
But then again I also think that is one of the reasons players had issues with DA2. Hawke wasn't the type of hero they thought they would get and it's hard to follow a reluctant hero when your mind isn't really into it.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Personally I'd take DA:O over W2 and definitely over W1. But W2 over DA2. W1...... you couldn't pay me to play. Hated that combat system. So far finding W2 combat to be a HUGE improvement. I enjoy it enough that it even cuts into my LA Noire and Fable 3 time. Guess i'm just strange in that I found DA:O better then it's sequel. But found Witcher 2 and Mass Effect 2 to be better then their originals.
