Rift a huge WoW clone

i00x00ii00x00i Member Posts: 243

Seriously it's not, I find absolutely no similarities between this and WoW that I wouldn't normally find in any other RPG. However, alot of people seem to think this game is still a major "WoW clone" so please if you think this game is like WoW explain.

Try to explain your reasons while keeping out Rifts similarities to RPG elements. What I mean is that if there is a similarity between Rift and WoW that must exist for the sake of the RPG genre then do not list it because it doesn't count.

Let's see how many reasons you can give me because I've yet to find one.

Most people go through life pretending to be a boss. I go through life pretending I'm not.

Wow this has been way over done, if you cant see it and cant find reasons inthe 1000000000 threads about this, then this one wont help either.

The ~join our Horde~ adds don't help there cause.

I think this is a troll post, but ill try to explain it anyway. Its a wow clone, because it has exactly the same game mechanics as WoW for starters. Gear grinding dungeons over and over to go grind more dungeons.

It looks a lot like WoW graphically. The avatars are virtually the same. Well lets say it is more, WoW/warhammer/AoC graphically, but mainly WoW imo.

The zones, and the way they are laid out is like Wow. Pretty stupid to go from the forest to the desert because you crossed a zone line, just like WoW. Not only are they laid out in a similar manner, most of the zones in Rift are complete ripoffs of WoW zones.

You grind quests for exp, just like WoW, and they hold your hand so its mindless, just like WoW.

Most of the classes are very similar to WoW, for example, a ranger is exactly the same as a WoW hunter.

You can do lame boring warfronts, just like the lame boring BGs of WoW.

I didnt personally craft, but im told by friends who do that the crafting is very similar to WoW crafting.

I played WoW for 6 months when it was first released, and if i saw someone playing Rift, and they told me it was WoW, i would honestly believe them.

It's not a big secret that since the massive success of WoW, everyone has been copying this formula, thats what big business does. You look at anything that is made by humans, and you can be sure other humans will copy it, like cars and cell phones, and computers. The I phone came out what 3 years ago, and it spawned a whole genre of phones they now call smart phones.

Every company that makes a cell phone has their version of the I phone, just like virtually every game company has their version of WoW. This is trions version of WoW. Wow has spawned a new genre of game, a subset of the mmo genre, we have even come up with a name for them. Just like people now call any phone that is like an I phone a smart phone, we now call any game that is like WoW a themepark/geargrinder.

This game falls into that category, it is a themepark/geargrind.

Everything you just explained should be in an RPG period because they are all RPG qualities.

Graphically the game engine is completely different and WoW is more of a cartoon.

As for zones, a dessert and a forest, how original WoW was to come up with that, oh wait again every RPG has forests and desserts.

Every RPG is a grind and quest for EXP

The classes are not similar to WoW their similar to WHAT EVERY RPG CLASS must be in order to be a good fantasy RPG.

You failed to list similarities that AREN'T LIKE RPG'S PERIOD. Everything you listed explains an RPG not WoW or Rift.

Do you get the point yet?

I don't see the WoW clone mentality. Comparing Rift to WoW is like comparing apples to apples or an RPG to an RPG.

Most people go through life pretending to be a boss. I go through life pretending I'm not.

I hate People that say games are a wow clone because there fantasy

They genre of most games now is Fantasy and most are going to have the same setup and same featuers as other Fantasy games.

And plus i don't think Wow and Rift have much in common lol thats just me but also if you want to call other games Clones of each other then World of Warcraft is a Clone of Everquest

and the First Warcraft games is a clone of Warhammer Since that is basicly what they went for

    Playing: Single player games |

Awaiting: Wild Star |Blade & Soul | The Repopulation | The Elder Scrolls online | ArcheAge | Firefall | Survarium | Bless | Black Desert |

i just don't get it why there's always someone insisting on calling some game a clone of wow. ok developers get some ideas from wow but not just wow because people are always influenced by the ideas of others even if they have original ideas of their own (usually it's just a unique recombination of other ideas anyway rather than being really original) and wow is not an exception to that 'rule' because it was not the first mmo out there.

but as long as it's not just copy - paste in a computer game it's like blaming someone for not reïnventing hot water every time when someone makes coffee, tea, soup or whatever with ... hot water, that still does not make the end result taste the same but ... individuals always have their own way of thinking so it would not surprise me if there will even be someone claiming that hot water is already a 'clone' of water :p

    Easy.

Everything WoW does, RIFT tries to do. They do it in much the same way as well. If you can't see the similarities, you're refusing to see them.

You don't have to agree it's a clone, but it is the way it is simply because Blizzard made so much money doing it that way

It starts at the basic UI and NPC interaction. It continues with the style and number of questing. Combat is equally as dull. Playing RIFT really highlighted just how dull WoW's combat is for me--I remember telling my friends the combat was dull years ago and then somehow slipped into the game. Playing RIFT and realizing the combat (123123123123) was boring, and then realizing it was the same... It gave me reason to never go back to WoW.

There are other models that have worked well. Maybe not (ok, certainly not) as well as WoW but still.

    • RIFT could have chosen a different UI for gameplay and npc interaction

    • Mehanics could have used different names.

    • Find a different setting. You want to separate yourself from WoW? Give us something in a new setting. Did you see the top 10 non-fantasy mmo's? People may disagree on the order, and that SWG or STO wasn't listed, but it paints the picture vividly: Most non-fantasy mmo's suck. A superhero setting like CoX doesn't lock out the potential for battles with magic, magic based players, or baddles with behemoths--maybe even a dragon or two. A scifi setting can incorporate tehnology to look like magic or have magic exist somewhere in the universe.

    • Combat. Change it. TERA, for instance, is coming out soon and has a kind of free-targeting system. That's mounmentally better than tabbing.

You see a game that's well "polished", I see a game that was easy to "polish" because they already saw a vivid version of the game they were trying to create.

By the definitons being used, every fantasy MMO ever made (including those made before WoW) is a  WoW clone, so saying Rift is a WoW clone basically means nothing.

I really wonder how much Rift hate comes from people who've actually played the game.

OP is just rehashing his other threads challenging the existence of WOW clones only applying specfically to Rift in this case.

As mentioned, there's a sticky thread that contains countless arguments of why Rift resembles one game or another.
