What genre of MMO...

JamesPJamesP Member UncommonPosts: 595

I am working on a MMO Using the Hero Engine. I have a basic listing of features set but they could all work in either Fantasy or Scifi or maybe even some others So before I start on the Story I was just wondering what players were seeking...

Fantasy. sci-fi? Been there got the T- shirt. I am voting other becouse I would like to see anything other than thoes two genres. How about some Cyberpunk, or Steampunk. Time travel. Or some crazy crossover of fantasy/sci-fi/ Shadowrun or Rifts (Rifts the pnp sistem not the lame mmo) style.  Gothic Horror, anything. The world is full of endless posibilities. Making a game is a huge underttaking on your part. Don't stimp on the story man. Good luck with it. :)

As you guys are voting I am talking with my team and we are coming up with ways that we can combine your guys wants into a single game... We can however confirm that Horror will not be included. Some elements of the others will be included! Still keep the votes coming though!

    Steampunk would be great.

So Steampunk seems to be a popular sub-genre that your guys want! Any other votes?

A Music themed MMO wouldn't lend it's self well to the features we have planned:

    Faction System

    Faction Created Kingdomes/Nations

    Nation vs Nation Combat

    Just to list a few...

    Thanks for the Vote though!

    Good luck on your endeavors.

There isn't much sci-fi MMOs around with 'fantasy with elves' settings cornering the majority of the MMO market. So not a surprise the Sci-Fi is what the forum-goers prefer.

Though  there is plenty of fantasy MMO's there is properly not enough of the kind you have planned!

I have always wanted a fantasy MMO based on the BIRTHRIGHT ip exsactly because of its system of faction and kingdoms conflicts. Combined with a few other really cool features (bloodpowers like highlander, the shadow world and so on). Unfortunatly its a world in the Ad&d setting.

Other. Alternate history, steampunk, WW1 era. Something like the Keith Laumer Imperium series.

I said other just because I already play a ton of fantasy and scifi and love em but want something different.  Horror, like survival horror, alternate history, steampunk, cyberpunk, etc.  Possibilities are endless.

Just don't forget to build the world first then add the game elements.  Immersion is a MUST with MMOs.  After that add the accessibility and fun factor and you should be golden.

In indie games it's best to have your own vision you really enjoy and make that come true. Trying to please the majority doesn't work for indie developers very well in such specialized field anyway.

I'd go with sci-fi, cyberpunk -ish theme, and mix it up with something very original.

From a (retired) game designer at TSR and Pacesetter Games here are my suggestions:

Shadowrun - absolute perfect for an MMO with single/group dynamics. In game net runners w/hacking and avatars/raid the corp/ambush the caravan/help the helpless/prey on the helpless/PvP/Jobs(quests)/shaman/mage/cyberpunk/computers/air combat fighters and transports/rolling tank cars/bases of operation and the list goes on..and on....and on.

Deadlands - Actually a great Steampunk/Western + Horror combo. The genre and background of the PnP game was outstanding but the game play mechanics were terrible. Cards/Magic/Texas Rangers/Bandits/Riverboat gamblers/Tart with a gun/gunfighters/native american nations/posse/showdown/aerial gunboats....u got it all.

Check out the TOTAL WAR series for PC. Obtain and use your own army/navy/airforce/space marine/fleet etc, Watch all the fascinating little figures (stunning detail and ease of control) do the fighting. PvE/PvP potential is unlimited and applies to any genre. Engine and games are from EA Games.

One piece of advice - select your genre VERY carefully. Try to do what you like to play but be careful of being too much of a niche game.

    I like classic fantasy because:

    - It has the most possible class concepts (fighter, barbarian, paladin, ranger, rogue, bard, martial artist, priest, druid, shaman, wizard, ...)

    - It has the most well laid out races (elves, dwarves, ...)

    - It can include pretty much any other genre easily (esp horror - the undead are pretty much standard part of any classic fantasy setting, but steampunk and cyberpunk elements are very common too)

    - It has the most variance in possible environments

Compared to the possibilities of magic, other settings are simplistic in comparison. For example, Star Wars pretty much only has Jedi, which are some kind of fighter/mage.
