It's one thing to say people are sore over a game failing. It's a completely different thing to having a bait-and-swap type gameplay (first 20 levels of AoC) and literally lieing about features of your game, printing them on the box, and when release comes...oh yeah sorry we'll get to that (dx11). Couple that with half-implemented and poorly thought out features (how many epic player-city sieges do you see happening) and huge content gaps in the later levels, and many people who were even defending the game couldn't go on even playing it once they realized the last levels were nothing but a grindfest of repeateable quests to get to 80, only followed by an unlocking chain of gear raids...myself included.

In other words, its no different than any other MMO but we tried to put a marketing spin on it to make it sound special.

That's exactly what I thought when it came to that part. It still sounds interesting, but that tidbit is quite possibly the most laughable spin ever.

You know not every adventure is about the destination  some are about the journey.  this is what single player games are all about. its funny because we have all heard "this or that mmo" wont be just another grind but they end up nothing more than a grind.

so its hard for players to have a different mindset when that is all there has been. alot of us are tired of empty promises. I am one of those. but i will still hold out optimisitcally pesimistic for  TSW and TOR and hope it will be what they promise to be. i expect there to be some boring content.  I just hope there not grind fest.

I really hope these games are about the journey not the destination end game is great but boring beyond hell.

Games I will be playing are: TES V, SWTOR, ME 3, TSW

Looking at the question his comment was an answer to, I think it's more that he was saying that even if they provided immersive story content ingame, the story of the player, what players experience and do ingame, is still more important to them. Sort of making a statement or reassurance for those who're sceptic about dev provided story that to them player 'story' (experiences) > dev provided story (quest, lore) content

I don't remember any recent MMO that came out with no classes or levels and modern era settings? so please tell me what other MMOS TSW look likes?

Just waiting on some kinda of expected date. Even the year would be good. Although it shouldn't be so far in the future that everyone gets turned off just because of the wait.

Guess this wait is like TOR, we are just getting teased enough to keep interest spiked but not told enough to really hold them to it.

Their last release date projection was Fall 2011 to Jan 2012, but that was said last year, so it might change.

    I like this a lot .

    <-SNIP->

"" Investigation Missions - These missions are really the connecting line between the real world and The Secret World. Your character needs answers, answers that can often only be found through searching the vast annals of human knowledge. Instead of trying to include all of the knowledge of human experience inside the game world, we simply acknowledge that answers exist on the outside. And then we let players research and uncover these things to solve in-game problems.

Some investigations are informational - you have to search for the right information which clues you into what to do next. Some of them are logical - figure out a sequence of numbers or a series of events. Some require very specialized knowledge - hack this computer using a series of commands only a hardcore hacker would know or translate a riddle from this language which is only spoken by 300 people on earth.""

To me this shows great vision, I really like the idea of using real world knowledge and encouraging exploration of it. I'm an information/history nut though. It really looks like they want to attempt something unique here, they basically did the same with both AO and AOC in many ways, to varied degrees of success. That's why even considering their past issues I am usually intrigued by what Funcom try and do.

I'd bet this comes from their adventure gaming day's.

Still very generic questions and very few concrete answers given... This kind of interview could even fit for games like darkfail...

    You're a Hardcore Survivor!

You not only survived the zombie apocalypse, but did it with style! Your mastery of zombie knowledge, survival tactics, and weaponry is nearly unmatched. Congratulations, for you are hardcore!

Or it could mean that they are trying to get back to what MMOs used to be where the players actually formed a community.

The more i read about TSW the more intrugued and even interested I become. Then I remind myself this is a funcom game so from previous firsthand experience I should temper my expectations until at least 3-6 months after release.

As much as I look forward to this game I am SHOCKED by how little was said in the above interview but used so much space.

Not a single question was answered directly.

    For Example:

MMORPG.com: The dev diary makes mention of the fact that all characters in TSW are motion captured and voice acted. Will this be the case at launch or will it only extend to the opening parts of the game as was the case in Age of Conan? Dag Scheve: We're putting a lot of emphasis into making characters in The Secret World believable, and giving them a voice is one aspect of that. Our aim is to have all characters in The Secret World fully voiced at launch, from the start of the game and all the way to the end game content.

    No mention of motion capture.

    Here is another example:

MMORPG.com: You say that the most important story in The Secret World is "your" story, meaning the story of the players. With that said, how is my story, as a player, going to be different from the stories of every other player? Dag Scheve: When we're talking about your story, we're talking about the one you'll create for yourself. How you experience the game, the friends you'll make and the alliances you'll forge. Your experience will be different because you're you, with your unique point of view. Everything you experience in the game is part of your story, and your experiences are always the most important.

That is the most generic answer in the world and has nothing to do with the game whatsoever.

So he basically said that you make the story up by your own experiences and not the game meaning the game is the same each time (which means it is linear and repetitive in my book)

As much as I want to LOVE THIS GAME and I think like many others it will have potential, these vague answers that dont say anything worry me greatly.

Yes, this is the trick with all these interviews etc: "The Secret World" OR "Promising the World"? This was a good response:

Part of the problem is the emphasis most games put on progression. If people are doing something *only* to be rewarded, then they will search for the path of least resistance. The aim is to make the challenges enjoyable enough that the players feel rewarded simply for overcoming them. This is something we are encouraging in every aspect of The Secret World - no levels and classes takes the emphasis off *acquisition* and hopefully puts it back on *enjoyment*.

Also the quip about Endgame, same as GW2 "The whole game is endgame" or "Level 1 is endgame." HOWEVER so far TSW has been HIGH on ATMOSPHERE (!) but low on detailed mechanics... definitely letting the monster rattle it's cage, before letting it out *expectation*.

Sounds like an interesting game... I went and checked out their web site... I'll certainly take a another look at this game once they start releasing hard facts about the game.

I've been waiting for an mmo to come along that has the elements of World of Darkness dice rpg, i hope this does this genre justice. I could definitely go for a more modern approach to an old story.

Awesome interview.  I especially like the 2nd question and answer and the last.  These are the types of ideals and goals I would have if I was making my own MMO.  I am very happy to see Ragnar get this project, and to see the direction they are taking it.  They are not cloning what is out there chasing a $ sign.  They have real passion for making games, and they did with AoC as well.  They just over promised and marketed.
