I haven't broken any rules and I've been pretty active, but my stars went down by about 3/4th a star and I went from hard core member to advanced member... Umm..?

Define active?
do you log in every day? Do you make multiple, long posts daily? Do you blog?
Your ranking is also dependent on the size of your posts and how much of your post was actually typed by you rather than just copy/pasted from a different page or links.
Well I do post about every day, not necessararily long posts, and I don't blog. But I have changed nothing yet it went down somehow.
It's all based on activity on the forums. If you are very active and post a lot you will be hardcore. It has nothing to do with rules or time on the forum, but the amount you post per day.
It actually has a lot to do with rules. When you break the rules, they knock you down. Trust me, it happens to me all the time
Took the liberty to read some of your post history.
Seems like you're reasonable to me, but posts such as this: "eventually you Rift fanboys are going to realize 'Oh hey, I've played this game before... About 5 years before it ever came out'..." will screw with your stars. Not that I disagree with that comment, btw Try and avoid name calling, as hard as it may be.
Personally, my stars are all over the place. I'm up, I'm down, it all seems to depend on my behaviour. Which at times, is admittedly rather rough
It's almost a game in and of itself to become an Elite member. But let me tell you, it feels good baby, it feels good. "My stars, are better than yours. Damn right, they better than yours....."
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb
I wouldn't pay any attention to it if I were you, it is just another archaic achievement system. Similar in usefulness to an XBL gamerscore.
