Stereotyping or not, I foresee Champions Online and Star Trek Online to shift over to pay to win.
CO is already F2P, and I agree with you that it won't be much longer until STO announces it's also switching over. On the pay to win part, I do alright as a free player in CO. I don't pvp so the only thing I'd ever consider buying out of their C-store is content. And since you can pick up a copy of CO for as little as six bucks, it's not bad considering that gets you 400 store points.

True. Cryptic did a nice job of keeping pay to win out of there games. But Perfect World is another story.
Isn't Cryptic the one that said STO won't go F2P until there other games get nice revenue from being that way? The irony.
Fitting, since PW is like the Borg of the MMO empires. They're assimilating everyone and everything with the massive amounts of money they culled from all the very stupid people paying literally THOUSANDS (per person!) to deck out their characters for PvP.
Terrible news. I can't think of a more greedy company that Cryptic could go to. I don't think this is going to affect Cryptic's lineup positively, though one would argue it can't get much worse for them.

Mmmm , I cant decide if this is good or bad , I know Perfect World is a hugely succesful FTP game .... it will be interesting to see how this Pans out.
Trying to think of the positive, I would say that at least PWE already has a branch in the US.. So anything coming from the cryptic studios would definitely see a stateside release probably first or very close to any other release..
Had an "Asian first" company like Hanbitsoft got ahold of Cryptic, we'd say goodbye to seeing anything from them for a few years..
But let's hope that Cryptic can finally bring some true WESTERN influence to their lineup, where all the guys don't look like females and armor isn't a chem-lite glowing robe or asian garb..
Of all the potential buyers, I think PW is a good choice. They have a similar portfolio with f2p + item shop, and among the f2p games I always thought PW had the better games. Not my cup of tea, but of an ok quality, and they keep their MMOs supported with expansions and new stuff. So it looks like a fairly good choice now.

Well as they say, birds of a feather flock together. They both love the idea of pay to win.
They were already taking the worst aspects of P2P and F2P and putting them together in STO.
A subscription to play AND a cash shop? When I left STO, Cryptic crammed as much as they possibly could every month into the cash shop, despite the game lacking in so many things.
It's not a stretch really to see them go all in with P2Win. I expected them to do it sooner. But I guess they were busy fleecing what remains in STO.

We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." It tickles me that so many are wasting time throwing pennies at this topic. Everyone hates Cryptic for killing their first borns blah blah blah. After 18 months it gets old. I get that they are the official sin-eater for MMORPG but how does this change anything and how is this news? The biggest story here seems to be how much CO players are celebrating now that Atari is out of the picture (focusing on their wonderous Daggerdale title, I'm sure).
There is NO miracle patch.
95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.

Oh my... Yeah pay 2 win (like Need For Speed World). I have a copy of STO CE I got for $14 out of the bargain bin less than a year ago, haven't played it past the 30 free days, perhaps when it's F2P I could fire it up once in a while to shoot some ships in space.
Having read the statement it's my distinct impression that this purchase was more about a percieved advancement in tech. ( the engine ) With Cryptic losing money I can't see PW allowing Cryptic to continue to operate in one of the more expensive labor markets in the world. PW will more then likely get up to speed on the engine and then either close Cryptic or move it's operations to a cheaper labor market. As for what it means for STO and CO , I'm not sure the IP's don't seem to be the motivation for the sale. More then likely they will continue in F2P form and slowly fade from view.

Not really surprising this news, I don't care about CO or STO but fear the worst for the new NWN project.
