Open World PVP

BaconJA89BaconJA89 Member Posts: 118

As a former Dark Age of Camelot player, I'm really looking for an MMO with viable end game open world PVP.  I'm contemplating playing this, Aion, or Darkfall, but I want to learn more about the open world PVP here.

Is it like WoW where it is just a ganking game? Can you capture the other factions cities?  Is open world PVP viable for end game progression?

Thanks in advance!

Would be great to get some input from other ex-DAoC players too.

On pvp servers, unfortunately, it's mainly guild squads roaming around killing anyone they see.  I've heard rumors, there are plans that Trion is going to add quests and rewards for raiding towns and Sanctum/Meridian in order to improve open world pvp.  If you like DAoC's style of pvp, then I'd stick with DAoC.  I currently play Rift when I feel like PvE, and switch to DAoC for PvP.  The Warfronts in Rift are ok, but after 5 or 6 times in a day, they get kinda boring.  Port of Scion is the only real Warfront I can play for long periods of time, but you have to get to 50 first to play it.  Other than Port of Scion the pvp isn't that good when compared to DAoC, but then again, no game can compete with DAoC's PvP hehe :)

DAoC was one of my favorite games of all-time (could even be number one).  I too am looking for a return to real OpenWorld PvP with purpose behind it.

That said.. I tested RIFT extensively.. for a long time.. and did enjoy much of the game.  I thought it had the best polish of any recent game I tried and the dynamic events were quite fun.  Sadly... I feel they missed the boat on openworld PvP.  Instead of allowing actual territory control via existing towns they went with a forced mechanic called Ancient Wardstones.

They really focused their PvP energy on the instanced E-Sport battlegrounds (warfronts).  If that's the kind of PvP you are looking for I think the RIFT versions do a pretty good job.  It wasn't what I was looking for though.  I'm searching for that DAoC 2 version of Openworld PvP and just haven't found it yet.

But RIFT is actually a very good game IMHO... just not what I was looking for personally.

Ya it is really unfortunate no one has been able to come up with a game as good as DAOC in terms of world PVP.  I mean it was the 2nd or 3rd most popular MMO at one point, yet no company has successfully been able to make a worthy successor.

It's too bad about Rift's open world PVP.  Game would be great if they could only combine their open world PVE with meaninful open world PVP.

I find open world end game much more compelling than being in an instance, killing the same bosses that 20 other groups are killing.  Instanced PVP is the same.  It is match based, and being played by dozens of groups at the same time.

Unfortunately the world PVP is not good.... There's no incentive to do so and most are sitting in their capital city waiting for a Warfront to pop (sounds familiar eh?) :)

There's also lots of griefing, assuming you find ANYONE at all to fight, it probably won't be a fair fight.

World PVP is one thing in RIFT that's really poor IMO - but on the plus side, the Warfronts are fun and the PVE is very good... I very much enjoy the dungeons, world and RIFTs/invasions (though it gets boring over time, like anything I guess).

Not trying to bash the game but if your looking for DAOC - sadly, you will be disappointed.

Just my 2 cents/opinion for what it's worth

Open World PvP...is rather meaningless in Rift. No real reason to PvP in open world other than something to do, nothing to really fight over, doesn't really have any consequence on the world in general...aside from fighting over artifact spawns.

I'd say Rift is one of the worst PVP games I've played.

Warfronts are nothing but a mindless grind, but as the rewards they give are far more efficient that any other means (even if you lose), people just sit in their capital cities waiting for them to pop.

This in turn means that world PVP is next to non existant. Add to that, that game is heavily gear and class orientated, and that there is no meaningful death penalty... and you have one hell of a dull open world PVP system.

If you are looking for decent world PVP, AVOID rift IMO. Hell, even WOW had better world PVP than this.

I am not aware of anything that could compare to DAoC RvR. That was a truly great game for its time minus the botters.

Lack of meaningful world pvp and instanced pvp is why I cancelled my Rift sub.

Honestly do we need another game like WoW, Eq2, Vanguard, etc...?

pvp in rift is the same as it is in all other mmo's. just cant find games where pvp is not a gankfest. just the way it is.

As far as I know, there is no game out besides DAoC that is 3 faction RvR MMO.

If there is, please let me know so I can play it.

Guild Wars 2 will have WvWvW content in the form of 3 factions (servers, actually) RvR, although it will be separated from the PvE World. They claimed they developed it in the trail of Dark Age of Camelot; that's the closest thing we're gonna get, unless Funcom resumes the war between secret societies in the Hollow Earth, which was supposed to be RvR with objectives too.

yeah I was super disappointed that Rift's open world pvp doesn't have much objective/incentive for open world pvp. I've been playing it for a week now and I'm level 40. I have a feeling I will stop playing soon (I stopped warhammer around lvl 35 as well).

I don't want to spend countless hours grinding pve gear for a pvp endgame that isn't as good as daoc. I've been a daoc player for the last 10 years since it was released so I got really spoiled I guess and have experienced pvp that most mmo players don't know exist. ( is my daoc video page )

I really liked Rift's concepts and ideas, the game is very polished and brings a lot of things to do for the PvEr., but like I said DAOC spoiled me.

What open world PvP incentives would be attractive to players?

    To dream, perhaps to be.
