Returning to the MMORPG scene, need advice on a decent game that will run on poor bandwidth

MajesticoMajestico Member UncommonPosts: 481

After a long absence, I am wanting to return to my favourite genre of game, the MMORPG.  However, as I am using a PAYG, wireless device, I only have around 1 gig of band-width, actually only half that during prime-time hours.

This forum has been one of the first places I've reuturned too after going back online, as I used to post here a lot and I value the community's opinions.

I am wondering if there are any good games that you can recommend that will not lag under this band-width (or at least not too much), and I also need a game that does not need too much downloading as I have a restriction on how much I can download.  These are the reasons why I cannot simply return to the games I used to play, like Lotro, WoW, and EQ2.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Btw, I posted here instead of the LFG forum due to the specific restirctions on what I can play, and also because I've a better chance of getting help on this forum due to the volume of posters.

Moved to LFG. These threads belong in here, and there is much activity here as well.

For lag it depends on how good a connection you're getting with that wireless broadband more than the game itself, if it's half decent connection and you live in the US you should be fine on any game. The times when i've connected using mine i get around 200 - 250 ping from the UK to the US compared to around 100ms from the home cable connection.

For GB usage i couldn't say which but even Age of Conan with it's shiny graphics never used much, but 1GB isn't a whole lot so i'd probably opt for something less shiny like Rift or WoW.

To be honest I have no idea how big the dl is or how much bandwith used, but I'm enjoying GuildWars in my 3 days or so of playing.

Actually AngryBeaver, that is quite a good shout.  I hadn't thought about Guildwars until you mentioned it.  I know it is a lifetime account, so mine should still be there.  Unless they clear the data-base after a certain amount of inactivity.  Think I might still have the gameclient somewhere, so I'll need to rake it out and give it a try.

Anyone else have any suggestions?  I was thinking of trying UO, as it sounds like an old-skool type game that I might like.  However, my problem would be downloading the gameclient, as it would be in the giga-bytes and too much for my PAYG thingy!  Unless anyone knows if you can still get the game on DVD or something?

1 Gig of bandwidth...Wait are you going to download the client elsewhere?

A few more things Im not sure about :

    Is the latency ok?

Do you have a steady connection?

I remember when I had limited bandwidth, MMOs never really pushed me to the limit.  Its mostly websites.  Did you know that browsing around mmorpg.com forums usually uses somewhere around 1-2mb per page?  MMOs will usually have you using a constant 20kbps  in slightly crowded areas.  I remember 8 person teams in CoX uses uses 20kbps with spikes of 50kbps whenever the aoes start rolling around o.o

1gb is more than enough for MMOs if youre not downloading the client.  You usually have to worry more about browsing since its usualy 1-2mb or more per page o.o

    Edit :

Umm...isnt ther eanywhere else you can download from and maybe use a flash drive to transfer it over?  Or an external hard drive? Because seriously the client alone would cut you off

    Edit:

Doesnt matter if you get the dvd.  Patches will still eat your bandwidth

Thanks for the advice Castille.  Yes, it would appear that downloading the client, plus patching is my major concern.  I'll just have to see what I can do. :)

Im guessing this is the same sort of technology.. I used a hsdpa wireless device for 2 years and it cost me so much frustration..

1 gig would last me about 2 weeks playing world of warcraft just on send/receive major patches and client updates were out of the qustion due to cost.

Connection stablillity...Can be quite flakie, random disconnects from game are quite common. Frustrated me so much infact, i soldiered on an antenna and ran it up to the roof lol.

Think you will be ok with data transfer consumption for almost any game, but fall short with stabbility, Lag is a given due to the nature of the device.
