I came across this review while trying to discover more about the game and found out quite a few interesting things. I know that the West will receive a different game from the Koreans, but it should still give you a good impression. Enjoy watching!

Great read and enjoyed the vids. Nice Post!
Ouch:
"Crafting in this game is a joke. Everyone can achieve the max level within few hours just as long as you have the materials ready. Heck, you can even do it while you're watching TV or something. Since you are are able to queue up materials while you level up your crafting. And you only need to craft one item per 50 levels of crafting, which is one of the main component material you need for that current tier. So in total, if you have all the materials ready you can get level 200 crafting easy. Which means you would only need 4 different kinds of recipe to go from 1>50>100>200.
Honestly, I was a bit disappointed in the crafting system. It's kind of useless unless you want to make a white item, then use it as an upgrade material. Even if you are to craft a legendary item, the field boss items are much better. And the instance sets are way better than the ones crafted."
Not so impressed with the importance of gear and the main source for getting the stuff you need to even attempt endgame dungeons is grinding specific monsters. (Or buying the same drops off the AH).
Apart from the political system which is very nice, are there any other game features Tera has going for it in the rpg department or will it be just a good looking, fast paced combat fantasy mmo?

Well... you can change your armor's or weapon's appearance to the appearance of another one of the same type that is in your possesion and you can dye your armor. It will also have guild housing "eventually"
That's pretty much the only RPG features it has except it's political system, however it will have some other neat features in the next patch that have nothing to do with the RPG part, if you want to know about these features just ask.
I love this part:
Tera isn't a skill spam game after all. If you're looking to spam 20 different skills per minute then this game is definitely not for you. Tera Online is more concentrated on player skill, control, and reaction
So far (for the most part) I'm liking what I am seeing.

Keep in mind that in Korea the situation is very different. In Korea the players generally don't mind a less polished product, their starting version had no political system, no maximum level yet, some other features weren't really present yet. The Western version will receive a Westernized version. Not just a translation like Aion, but less grinding since us Western people don't really like that, increased travel speed, altered graphics for races such as Elins and some other things. The Korean Team is made up of roughly 200 people and the Western team is made up of 80 people or so. So they are taking the Western market serious and will most likely update the crafting system as well.
Recently they said that servers were merging and that the situation for the game wasn't exactly looking great. This is another thing which should be eyed with suspicion. Merging servers after the initial levelling rush will keep your servers far more active. At launch people will be able to find other players for BAMS, but later this could be much harder. So I am quite happy with these server mergers. A friend of mine noted that Rift should merge some ghosttown servers as well, but refuse to do it since they fear bad news being brought out.
To sum up the interesting features currently in-game (Korean Version):
- Combat System: Duh!
- Political System: My main reason of interest.
- Huge World: The amount of zones is staggering and they all have a very unique look.
- Solid Character Creation: Similar to Aion.
- Impressive Cutscenes: They were interesting which is surprising as I hate cutscenes.
- Combat Customization: Similar to talents, traits in other games.
- Gear Customization: Similar to the GW2 dye system by the looks of it.
- BAMS: Outdoor Worldbosses all over the place? Sign me up!
- PvP: This is uncertain yet for Western version, but the political system can do wonders for PvP.
- Server vs Server combat: Couldn't find much details on this yet, but it seems to be in the game now or soon.
- Story: I don't know if it is truly a personal story like TOR/GW2, but they seem pretty excited about it.
- Personal Store: There is an Auction House, but you can set up shop yourself or let your homonculus do it.
- Homonculus: Pet Character created by you to sell stuff to vendors, do your auctioning and so on.
They also promised several other features to be implemented in the near-future:
- Player Housing: Not much detail on this.
- More content: Duh!
They took quite a while for their first major content update, but if you take a look at the patchlist. You will notice that they are capable of creating huge amounts of content in reasonable time. Since our Western version will start out extremely polished, this gives me quite a bit of hope. Anyhow, here is the first patchnotes they put out:
http://www.terafans.com/topic/8776-destruction-of-the-beastsfuture-update-for-tera-online/page__pid__51278__st__0&#entry51278
In the next patch they will also release Server vs. Server combat wich is another type of PvP where servers fight each other and they will also introduce Dark crevices (Something that sounds similar to RIFT's rifts)
Interresting read.. Thanks for sharing !
Well, review was written by realy big fan of the game and it was 4. feb. - close to release. I know few ppl who were realy hypped for Tera (so much they went to play it on korean servers after release ) and all of them were realy disapointed by the game. And I read Tera is loosing playbase in korea already

http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/01/rumor-tera-korean-servers-merging/
server merges and according NHN (korean publisher) 'lower-than-expected financial performance '
So my advice: keep your expectation low
Actually... couldn't poor performance in Korea hint at the possibility of better performance for a western audience?
Ouch. Reading all those comments it looks like they released it way to early and incomplete in Korea which has led to this mass exodus. I hope it fairs better in the west in a more finished state. The features mentioned by others here all sound pretty cool.

Hm, it would be probably first ever.
That's great but we need to know why they are dissapointed.
Because if it's becasue they have to do a bit of grinding or they can't zip to level cap or it's not something that someone cares about then it's a moot point. If however they say it was a buggy mess well then that's something else entirely.
I'm old enough to know that if someone is dissapointed in something then it's not that they are dissapointed that matters. it's the "why".

I got a good chuckle out of that. I'm not being a jerk or anything it just sounded funny reading that.
Interesting review but it sounds a bit contradictory. He says the game is skill/twitch based but yet also that it is impossible to finish some dungeons with small party and crappy gear.
That too me does not sound like a skill based game but rather zerg and gear oriented because surely, if you are skilled enough, you would be able to do the things he mentioned without the best gear and optimal party?
My gaming blog
Ok, 'Why' by ppl who played it :
1) game was realeased in Korea realy unfinished - boring grindfest (even by Lineage and Aion veterans) and whats worse combat system doesnt realy shine when u need to grind.
2) PvP system in korea sucks and sucks badly - when u want to attack someone, u cant attack him straight but he gets like 5 seconds to prepare for fight - it's more like duel.
Both can be 'fixed' for NA release, but question is what commitment to the game will be from developer when game is already considered fail in Korea.
From what I read he was basing it around not spamming 50 abilities per minute. So you need to pick the best ability for the situation.
That's just what I took away from it anyway.
Actually they complained that leveling was too easy so no grind like the one you described... the problem was that it was unfinished and had no endgame content.
I didnt wrote it was hard to level, what i meant was there was nothing to do except to grind mobs in PvE. Anyway I dont want to argue about how the game is (intentionaly avoided it in my first post in this thread) becouse i didnt played it.
I just wanted to say to not believe reviews like op posted.
I always said that Tera was going to be Lineage 3 (Aion was Linrage 2.5)
Never had any expectation or hype for this game
Funnily enough I am very hyped by the next MMO of Lineage creator (Archeage)
But from what I read, Archeage will be something completely different from the Lineage2/Aion/Tera trash
If you had read what I wrote, you would know why quite a few people left. Game came out in Korea without the levelcap, political system, server vs server and a continent less. The first patch was going to implement a shitload of content, but instead of the usual 2 months for a big patch, it took 4.
The couple of months after release are extremely important, but they dropped the ball at that point. The things which make the game interesting, came out a month after a lot of people stopped their subscription. Unlike the Korean Market, where incomplete experiences are generally put out already, the Western Version of the game won't suffer from this.
We are going to receive a proper beta, even though the game is already out in Korea. Our beta and final version will have the levelcap of 60, have all the continents, political system, server vs server, every single content patch Korea and many things exclusive to the Western Market since our wishes and needs are very different from Korean consumers.
This might give you the impression I am a diehard defender of the game, but that isn't true. I am quite concerned about several aspects of the game, but writing a game with a lot of potential off simply because they decide to merge servers after the initial craze of release is just silly. The best is to try and get into the beta, see for yourself or wait for your favorite reviewers to comment on the game.
To name a few of the things I am concerned about is the PvP/PvE/RP server thing for the Western Market. The biggest point of interest of the Political System was the capability of the Vanarch to set this himself in their respective province. Chosing the safety of your zone is pretty damn cool. Nothing is certain about this yet, but hopefully Vanarchs will keep that power.
Another point of concern for me is that beside the American team handling the Westernization of the game. That there is another studio who will make it European. They try to make it appear as if they are only handling translation, publishing and crap like that, but I am concerned nonetheless. There is quite a few games where Europeans are treated as dirty rags compared to the North-American market.
I could probably think of more concerns, but I will hope that the beta proves me wrong.
I would hardly call tera a failure in Korea. At launch they had around 160k concurrent players playing the game during the day, prior to server mergers they were running around 100k concurrent players. That was mostly do to the fact that as said above the game had to release early (money issues). Tera at launch was ranked 3rd most played in Korea, prior to server down size tera was ranked 7th. Now with the new patch that was added last week i'm sure most of those inactive accounts are now active.
What people fail too see is nobody likes to play on low pop servers and because of the nature of tera's political system they just cannot have low pop servers, esp when they plan to have multi-server invasions coming this next patch.

I was responding to malevil who wrote:

And I was interested in what they had to say. The other stuff you posted is not a concern to me. did you play L2 at launch? No sieges, no flying mounts (as was advertised). all they gave us was levling and crafting and ffa pvp. That's it. And we had a blast.
So no level cap? that's not an issue. No political system? not an issue until later.
Essentially if we get what L2 had at launch then I'd be satisifed.
edit: er provided it's not a buggy mess.

You posted review from initial realese which gave game score 9.5 - based on all reports I have seen, that was totaly wrong.
I wouldn't hold high hopes for NA/EU release. Same promises about NA/EU release i have seen in Aion, you know when came first real new content in Aion after initial NA/EU release ? Almost 1 year later ... and Aion was/is realy succesfull in Korea. Now you have game that failed to meet expectations in its home market, I simply dont understand what makes you think it will get better support and more content in west than other way more succesfull korean game (with the same NA producer as Aion had -> Brian Knox ).
Actually the west will launch with lv58 content and not lv60 content. lv60 content contains Exarch system, server vs server content & 3 new zones I believe.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
Actually it is not known if the level cap of NA/EU release will be 58 or 60. EME said that it would be AT LEAST 58. So thay could also release it with the lvl 60 patch for all we know.
