My choice would be AoC. I think it's a great game as is despite the population problems in the lower levels. Breath taking scenery and graphics, a fun and involving combat system and plenty of non tank and spank end game for the raiders. Out of all the current games it's the one where i find myself enjoying the combat no matter whether i'm fighting mobs or PvP'ing.
The only thing that might let it down is performance as it still has a few issues, most notably in the new Khitai areas.
I'm sure LOTRO is a great game but i only played it to level 10 due to same old same old combat and lack of PvP.
It's questionable whether LoTRO is actually a better game than all these. But it ABSOLUTELY has the best F2P model. I'd venture to say it's the only F2P game to nail the F2P model perfectly. Others should just copy. (DDO has similar model but a lot less game).

If you are looking for something close to free, then buy GW1 now, and buy GW2 later. They will both be cheaper than any P2W game you listed. However, if those are your only possible choices, then stick with LOTRO.
Well, without making any inflammatory judgements about the player base expecting something for nothing I will say that for 5 bucks a month or so you can experience a heck of a lot of DDO and LotRO.
Really nice systems where you can play as you like and not feel bound. DDO is especially good as a second gaming world as it is so different from other MMOs.

To me right now it's LotRO but I haven't ever tried AoC so I will have to wait and see...

Not quite traditional MMOs but I think Global Agenda, Hellgate London and APB are worth your time, since they are completely free too.
Does Mythos belong on this list? I wonder if it's good. The beta 3-4 years ago held so much promise!
I can't vote AoC since I don't know how greedy Funcom will be when they implement F2P.
I voted DDO because I still think it is the best freemium game.
F2P and freemium isn't the same however, they work rather different. I don't think comparing the game is truly fair.
The best F2P game is probably Forsaken world, or possibly Runes of magic.
Atlantica Online because of its unique gameplay.
