I admit, I haven't been following TERA that closely because until the western release nears close it's still too distant for me.
But there were some news bits that I encountered recently that have me puzzled.
First one was that it was slowly falling down the list of most popular games in Korea, with even a Lineage 2 above it now. The second, more surprising one was that it was going to merge its 36 servers into 15. It was a surprise, at least to me, because barely a few months have passed since its release.
I admit, I wasn't expecting this, I had expected more of an Aion pattern, where TERA would be hugely popular in Korea, maybe even surpassing Aion for a few months after its launch or at least nearing Aion and maintain popularity for many months, like Aion did.
Instead a tumbling down on the lists is happening with at least as far as I can recall the fastest merges that I have seen happen with AAA MMORPG's. To compare, if I recall correctly, Aion still has like 40-50 servers in Korea even after almost 3 years now.
What happened?
So far the most common themes I read was lack of endgame content compared with too fast leveling, and some talk about a bit bugginess or rushed launch.
Has anybody here followed the news around TERA that they've found explanations for this unexpected decrease in popularity or quick need for server merges?
And what makes it different from Aion? Because personally I'd rated TERA to be on the same quality level as Aion, so I also expected TERA to have the same success as Aion. So why doesn't it have the same succes in Korea itself as Aion had, what makes the difference?

Dang! Tera failing already
That's what they say, to bad it's not true.

I'm not saying that it's failing, but it seems to be doing less well than I had expected.
And what I'm curious about, how come? Why this fast server merges or why isn't it as high on the list as Aion, or why is it even falling down that list that it has to let Lineage pass above it, even while TERA is out only a few months?

Because those games are grinders which is what Koreans like.
actually if korea hates it that might be really good news for us considering the west hates most of their A+ games.
You might be on to something there.
That's true. I guess it depends. If the reason was that there was too little content to keep players entertained after they leveled to level cap too quickly, then you'll have the same problems here. So, I wonder about the reasons why this downward pattern in their own country.
Anyway, I had hoped that somebody here had done some extensive research in this matter and obtained some more thorough knowledge including specifics regarding TERA's state of affairs in Korea itself, but I guess I'll be doing some websurfing and research by my own, see what other TERA sites and sources are saying about it.

Tera will release here with aproximately as much content as it has in Korea at the time of release.
Tera launched in Korea with only lvl50 content (the developers wanted to wait until lvl58 content was complete) because the investors & there publisher needed funds. Players made the lv50 very fast, then proceeded to make alts. And then from there they decided let there subs expire until new content was released (Koreans are not used to paying for subs I guess). The lvl58 content was just added last week with and lv60 content should come on line sometime this winter.
What does this all mean for NA/EU. I don't know but it will launch in the west with lv58 content with an outside chance of having lv60 content but don't bank on it.......Will it be any good? No one knows, I guess we will find out in the coming months.

I don't know if that's true. I read somewhere that TERA released in Korea with like 600 quests and that it'll release in the west with more than 1000 quests. Granted, I'm not sure if that was just a rumour, but I'm pretty sure that TERA will undergo some serious westernisation before it'll be released here.
Also things like the political system will be implemented at the time when TERA's ready for the western release, where this was lacking at the release in Korea.

Well there is a HUGE difference in combat between Tera and Aion. People on these boards seem to want an action combat MMO, but look at Chronicles of Spellborn, DCUO and now Tera. I really don't think the majority of players want that kind of combat. Just wild speculation on my part, but there is real evidence in the lack of success so far for this type of game.
Sorry I put it bad, that's what I meant. All content that Tera has now in Korea will be in the western release and maybe even some of the upcoming content.
Did you ever play Chronicles of Spellborn?
The combat system was a complete joke. It was HORRIBLY contrived.
I can't speak on DCUO, but it's SOE so I really don't need to. Absolute worst MMO publisher there is. Horrible decisions across the board that indicate they have no idea what they're doing.
Tera looks like it's getting the idea, but I haven't played it so I can't say. Koreans, however, like a certain kind of mmo and Tera isn't of that type.
If you go to the website you'll see that the studio localizing it over here wants to make a lot of changes to it. They want to have the most recent build that Korea has available to the west on release. They also want to have other stuff in too.
considering they've had quite a few months to do this already I see this as entirely possible.
I hope Tera will have its place among sucessfull mmos, especially because it offers a different type of combat system to the traditional one. Having said that, there are many games that "share" the same basic combat gameplay but differ alot. Aion for example is very fast paced (especially if you play scout classes with high attack speed weapons/buffs) and also has flying added, even at 1 sec global cooldown, from WoW, looks somehow slow by comparassion. When I play Lotro or Aion I do not get the same feeling at all yet they share the same basic gameplay roots.
With the new expansion I think we can see better if the Korean gamer is interested in this game or not.
Wow it hasnt even come out to everyone else and its still failing...Must not be as good as everyone said.
maybe games like lin.2 are ahead of tera cuz of all the gold farmers that play more populated and established mmo's there like wow
and maybe they figured that they really dont need 1000000 servers at launch and down size the servers..have you ever played rift on a med. shard ..its like its dam near dead imo
less servers = more people on the servers at release ...if they need more they will open em up
They are downsizing though....Meaning they didnt even have how many people they planned on getting. Meaning the creators even hyped themselves up thinking it would be good...but found out that other people dont think that.
well.. if the combat system is anything remotely like DCUO then personally i wouldnt touch it with a bargepole.. the drop off could be due to the lack of content, with 'surges' once the content is added... given its failing popularity there, and the type of combat used in the game.. i'd lay fairly heavy odds on it really not doing all that well here in the west either.. DCUO for instance, is virtually dead, its probably only the PS3 guys who are keeping it running.. and how long will that last...
Pretty sure that this is the more accurate version. I dont think that the combat is not popular, I played the game for a bit and the combat was alot of fun.
I do believe that in a interview with Brian Knox from E3, he mentioned that most of the patches out by NA release will be in the NA version or something like that.
"WarpCode: Will we have all the korean updates at release or will we be several months behind them?
Brian Knox: As we finalize our timeline for launch we will evaluate what our final updates will be. Every update out so far will be included."

(I dont know how to quote from other sorces.)
I think Tera will do just fine on release, or as well as most people who follow Tera think it will do.
Well relax because it's not.

glad to hear it.. those types of games only really work on game pads.. and.. imo.. are the main reason why DCUO failed so badly on the PC...

The exp went to quick in tera , aoin takes a bit longer to exp/grind.
for a korean game lvling in tera isa bit easy compared to the real grinders they have out there l2 for exampel.
I had enough qest there are alot of repeatable hunting qeust. i think the players that came from l2 expected a bit more of a grind to max lvl instead of 1 week boom 50 and endgame cleared.
From what i can gather...
Tera is failing.

Only good thing about Chronicles Of Spellborn was combat. Otherwise it was small , and extremely boring game.
You can not expect sucess based on action combat alone.
