got the game for 20 euro on fathers day, but cant play it anymore since patch 1.3 because the computer keeps crashing constantly after 10-20 minutes playing since patch 1.3
really nice grafics, nice quest´s but that was it , ...... sadly
The game feels extremly slow to me
- Slow and unrealistic Movement
- Slow casting times (mage classes)
- The global timer sucks big time, its just a funkiller (they should remove it or lower to 0.5s)
-The Camera isnt good either, it should have some smooth turning effect
-The game feels like a Sandbox (EQ2 is better)
-3 classes combined sound good but ends in a build mess
- RIFT looks like a copy of WoW, even the ingame Font is the same
The worst for me is the high price of 49.99 Euro which is far to much for an online game
I am glad they offered me a trial and i didnt spend my cash on another game that i wouldnt play.
p.s i hope i wont get banned for just writing my opinion
I dont want to sound like a Rift apologist because I only played for 2 months and found the engame to be just as shallow and boring as WoW or EQ. However everything about the game I enjoyed except for the aformentioned endgame and the overly nerf happy development team, cough *Gersh* cough. But I really dont think you played past level 10 or so. I can assure you the game gets better while leveling, it just doesnt happen till the tri-class system starts getting fleshed out. You also sound like a fan of the EQ2 or Vanguard style of combat.
The speed is just as good as WoW's and the production quality shows through unlike other clones of WoW like WAR.
The Global cooldown is much more realistic for games then the 'castbar' for every ability and queue system thatgames ike EQ2 and VG utilized.
The camera is just as smooth as WoW, something tells me you failed to set your graphics and specifications to match your computer.
RIFT is as far from a Sandbox game as Hello Kitty adventures is similar to a First Person Shooter like Call of Duty. You really do not understand MMO lingo if you felt Rift to be a sandbox. Besides your use of (EQ2 is better)
is subjective and biased, so i'll leave your innuendo alone for now.
Rift is a complete carbon copy of WoW, and so will games like SWToR be as well.
Playing: GW2 Waiting on: TESO Next Flop: Planetside 2 Best MMO of all time: Asheron's Call - The first company to recreate AC will be the next greatest MMO.
I can't really agree with much the OP says. Slow casting times for mages? Well my casting times are fine and there are buffs that speed them up later as well, aiding a more strategic play style. In fact in my opinion the mages in Rift is probably the best mage class i've ever played, bar maybe the Elementalist in EQ.
Unrealistic movement? It's as good as any other mmo and better than some, including AoC and LOTRO.
Never experienced a single problem with the camera.
The game isn't a sandbox by any stretch of the imagination (unfortunately).
Build mess in the soul trees? If you can't sort your build properly, that's your problem not the game.
Rift is a copy of WoW? So what?
Glad you tried it at least even though you found it hard to play.
really nice grafics, nice quest´s but that was it , ...... sadly
The game feels extremly slow to me
- Slow and unrealistic Movement
I think if you're possibly coming from a game where you were at or near max level, with lots of fast travel and/or teleport options, starting travel in Rift (or any new game for that matter) is definitely going to seem slow. But realize, you're just starting out. All games are pretty slow at that point. I'll confess the character animations in WoW are very polished, but given how much better the graphics in Rift are, less-smooth movement isn't really a game-breaker. At the same time, I didn't find the movement all that bad.
- Slow casting times (mage classes)
- The global timer sucks big time, its just a funkiller (they should remove it or lower to 0.5s)
Yes, the GCD is a bit long at 1 second, but I think you can get used to it if it you play the game for more than 2 days. I confess this didn't really bug me too much at all. But I probably wouldn't mind a quicker GCD if they changed it.
-The Camera isnt good either, it should have some smooth turning effect
I don't quite understand this one here. Maybe you need to adjust your graphics settings? The game is pretty nice graphically, leaps and bounds ahead of a lot of games, so maybe you can't do that at whatever level detail you're used to in some older games. Either way, I don't have a great rig and I can't say I had any such problems.
-The game feels like a Sandbox (EQ2 is better)
I like it that you can quest, or you can help shut down rifts/invasions. More choices are better, I would think. But it's still basically questing to advance, so that's really not sandboxy at all.
-3 classes combined sound good but ends in a build mess
I liked the variety, though I would expand your criticism that it's far more involved coming up with the "best" build. Then again, the added variety is fun for a lot of folks. I think re-speccing and re-purchasing spells is giong to be very costly, so I'm not looking forward to that. But they went for something other than "1 build per class, per role". I don't know how that can be seen as "bad" on net.
- RIFT looks like a copy of WoW, even the ingame Font is the same
The UI and parts of the game world are shockingly similar to WoW. The UI I can understand, no need to re-invent the wheel, so that part wass fine. The lack of creativity in the game world was disappointing, I'll agree. But the rifts, invasions, etc. are just such an awesome little feature that it makes up for some of the lazy copy and paste in there. I remember people called Alganon a WoW-clone, but Rift doesn't seem to make any bones about their "homage" to the Blizzard behemoth, and was far more a clone than Alganon was.
The worst for me is the high price of 49.99 Euro which is far to much for an online game
I got the CE for $35 USD. I too would prefer if it were F2P, but it is what it is. It's really a game that's a cut above other games out there now. The amount of players you can get in one area taking down an invasion boss with no noticeable performance issues indicates that a lot of work went into this game. It's not some crappy Korean grinder. It's a Triple-A title, and I think of all the games that have come out in the few years, they have a right to charge what they did.
I am glad they offered me a trial and i didnt spend my cash on another game that i wouldnt play.
I won't be playing long either, but those rifts are so much fun. It was definitely worth picking up for a month or three, and I'll be hoping it goes F2P at some point now that they made some nice scratch selling the boxes.
p.s i hope i wont get banned for just writing my opinion

So you're totally entitled to your opinions and that's cool but I'd just like to bullet point out a few things about your concerns:
-IMO the game does feel slow, casting times just seem to be sluggish. But then if everyones casting time is slow then it doesn't really give anyone an advantage over another person so that's good I guess.
-Movement is unrealistic, I don't really know what you mean here.
-Global timer sucks, agreed but only because I'm a necromancer and it prevents me from macroing all my dots and debuffs to one button and then burning everyone. From a game perspective though, it keeps things balanced.
-The camera isn't good, I don't understand this.
-The game feels like a sandbox, not trying to be rude, but have you ever played a sandbox title? This game is about as themepark as it gets (which isn't necessarily a good thing either).
-Soul builds can be a mess, absolutely agree 100%.
-Rift looks like a copy of WoW, Oh well now you're just being rude.
-The price, Totally agree with you, that's why I bought it for 20 bucks during the Memorial day sale (that's around 13ish Euro (?) someone please check my math lol) and got a free month with it too, but that's pretty standard.
I will admit, when I first started playing Rift I was a really jaded ex-WoW player and all I did wa gripe and moan about it (I was also playing the free trial). But then I got it on sale and figured what the heck. Then I participated in my first Zone invasion in a raid with 20+ other level 12 playes and I have to say, it was like my first MMO all over again. No one knew where to go, no one knew the mechanics of any of the bosses that came into the zone, people were dying and rezzing and dying, in short it was a total cluster F but it was a ton of fun. After that I was hooked. I'll admit it isn't revolutionary game by any means but I am finding the more I play it the more interesting and fun it's become.

Heheh. I wandered over to Sanctum Watch during one of those as a low-level newbie and my God, it was hilarious with the invading NPCs friggin' spawn camping us. LOL. It was fun though, nobody knew what was going on, and the invasion seemed to have no end. Finally some "high level" (i.e., level 25s) came from Sanctum to rescue us and turned the tide of the battle.
This aspect of the game was more fun than I'd had in an MMO in forever. Nobody got pissed that they died, general chat was full of funny play by play commentary of the massacre, and I remembered again what was fun about playing MMOs.
Will I play it forever? Likely not. But is it fun if you have an open mind about it and look past the "cloneish" parts of it? It sure is.
When i played through my first beta experience i had some of these complaints.. I was playing a cleric and the casting times was unbearable.. I've since switched to warrior and it plays very fast paced.. You should switch up the classes and try leveling to higher levels and all you're complaints will pretty much be void.
Currently Playing: Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta
Hype is an amazing creature. Two, Three months ago, posters here would have, and did, rip apart more-informed reviews from people who played the beta and real game.
Some of you disagree with this guy, some of you mostly agree but I'm rather shocked that 2 days in the trial lends him any credit.
No offense intended to the OP.
Spec'ing properly is a gateway drug. 12 Million People have been meter spammed in heroics.
If any of you out there enjoyed this game then fair play to you.
I didn't, I bought it like a fool instead of going for the trial, maxed my char' out within the month and had to force myself to do that because I was determined to get my monies worth, I was bored within the week.
Sword & Sorcery has been done to death and I should have known better but I was hopeful...
Borecraft has benefitted immensely from the fact that there just isn't very much decent out there to play, my friends have little imagination and are all still grinding for bigger swords with more hit or boots with more agility or...pfft,
Five years and several level 80's later I did the unthinkable, I committed a blasphemy, I gave my WoW account away and moved on to what I hoped were greener, fresher pastures, Lord of the Rings and Warhammer. Well that lasted about as long as me in a bed with Katherine Heigl and Kristanna Loken.
MMO options are shite at the moment, all fanfare and little to no follow through, (am I off-topic here? Fuck it my rant, don't like it "move along, move along")
I try not to be too subjective in life, what I like others may not and vice versa, you may love this game if you play it and I envy you if thats the case, really, but experience is nothing if not shared and if I was creaming my pants about Rift I would be on here recommending to you all so you could share the wonderful experience that I was fortunate enough to be having, my pants however, remain unsoiled. I only really mention LofR and Warhammer in this post but the list of games I have tried and worlds I have entered (and endured) is long and somewhat undistinguised.
The world of Rift is nothing most of you haven't experienced before, but if you're tempted play it safe - get the trial first.
I would say that you really do need to play the game up to at least lvl 10 or 12 or so. The newbie zone, which takes up to about lvl 6 is not a good indicator of how they game will play with the rifts and invasions and footholds active. Once you are out of the starting zone and open up a little bit of the map over the course of a few levels it will give you a better impression of what you are up for.
The rifts may or may not be your thing. I am not saying that you will change your mind or anything. I am just saying that you don't really see much of what the game is until the low teens.
Right now I am back in Aion so I don't currently have a dog in this race. Rift is a decent enough game. It just doesn't hook you like some other games do. So unless you get connected into a great guild it tends to run out of steam fast.
One think I have ti say for this game. If you have an alt habit like I do, this game is quite fun.
Once you complete the quests for all of the various "souls" you can respec your character at will. Thus at level 20 or so is only about 5-10 gild for a complete respec. This equates to about 5 quests worth of cash.
If your necri is nit doing well, try speccing with more Elemental magic and sprinkle in a little Necro for fun!! the game is not a whole lot different from others out there. The rifts are basically a PQ a la WAR however, the boss mobs coming out and establishing Footholds and taking over quest hubs is a breath of fresh air in the stale MMO world currently available.
My .02 is this is a good destruction while waiting on TOR or TSW.
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.
Purchased Rift, played for a few weeks to level 31 (I think...) and then had to quit. Very boring and repetitive game. The instanced dungeons are dull and uninspiring when compared to AO's, AoC's or WoW's...the characters jump really funny and movement can seem stiff.
I can't believe that someone actually stood up for the combat in this game. IMO Warhammer Online had better combat than this game. With Rift its click 1 to initiate combat, click 2 til you have all combo points built up, click 3 to use finisher....between that and the global cooldown it seems very generic and something from a FTP game.
The world feels like a narrow road that leads you everywhere you go. Go off the beaten path and you wont be rewarded with amazing monuments or things of that nature...just the same world.
Im glad some are enjoying it, but I still cant believe it gets hype these days.
I don't think the original poster has given the game enough of a try. As people have said here, the game really opens up after the first couple of areas, the rifts get more involved and interesting. That's not to say that there aren't problems with the game, there are, but some of what was listed are not major big deals.
I am a bit perplexed as to the global cooldown comment. Either there is one, or there isn't. It can be annoying (for me it's not my prefered combat mechanic), but how does having a slightly slower one really make a big difference to that annoyance? I would prefer if games didn't have one at all to be honest, and had more of a queueing system like the two EQs, DAoC, LotRO...
With respect to the slowness of characters, one thing I really like about Rift is that you move slower when going up hills, as one should. I wish developers would go one step further and make flora on the terrain an important element of strategy in MMO combat, as well as weather. I think these would both be cool elements to have in PvP especially.
Builds, well... it takes some playing around to find one that suits a person's playstyle, beyond the usual drive for competitive gamers to min max in a flavor-of-the-month sort of way. Building the builds is great fun as is experimenting with them, but the negative I see is that most of the souls are... well... a bit drab in comparison to some of the classes in other games. I still think the pennacle of fantasy game classes was Vanguard, and I really love the classes in DAoC, EQ1 and the more recent incarnation of EQ2. I have found two souls I really like in Rift: Cabalist and Necro. They have some special little abilities that make them cool, but the others seem very plain. They don't really give me the strong desire to play them, at least not in comparison to the two I mentioned.
Originally posted by Deathofsage I'm rather shocked that 2 days in the trial lends him any credit. No offense intended to the OP.
Credibility for what? To give his opinion based on his 2 days of play time?
He didnt talk about high end PvP or raiding.
If his opinion is that the animation is not good then thats fine, he doesnt have to play for 2 months and get to level 50 to give his opinion on the animation.
I agree the GCD is a poor design. It slows the game down for no reason.
Not sure what you mean about the 3 classes combined into one bit. If you mean souls, then don't combine defensive and offensive roles. That's your decision.
Its takes until about level 20 for the soul tree to become interesting, IMO.
Basically, its a well made game that is based purely on the WoW model of solo questing until max level, and then getting on a gear treadmill.
I'm currently 2 days into my free trial of Rift. I can't really say I feel the same as the OP about it. My initial thoght about the game was WAR 2. It felt exactly like WAR for atleast the first 6 or so levels. I'm only currently level 12 but I don't feel it is exactly like WAR anymore. It still has a lot of the same feel, but I'm starting to enjoy the game more. At first I was disappointed in the Rifts because they felt like PQs only you couldn't do one anytime you wanted, as you could with the PQs. After fighting through a couple full invasions, I now feel they did improve on PQs. Also if there are not any Rifts available in the zone you are in it will not take long for one to pop. Anyway I still have no plans of purchasing, but I am having more fun after day 2 than I did on day 1.

I see this game more as it's all about rifts and invasions, some dungeoning, and the quests are just a fall-back. So in that sense, this game is not purely based on WoW's model of solo questing. I think you're missing quite a bit of fun if you don't group up with people and close some rifts and defend against invasions...

Not sure what server you're on, but I'm on one that is labeled "medium", as are most, and there is no one rifting at my level range(35) to group with. I actually stopped seeing people once I left Stonefield. Are you new to Rift? I can see how someone who has only been in the starter zones would say something like you did.

Nope not new to Rift. I am level 30 cleric and level 40 mage.

He didnt talk about high end PvP or raiding.
If his opinion is that the animation is not good then thats fine, he doesnt have to play for 2 months and get to level 50 to give his opinion on the animation.
No through my experience that'd be Fallen Earth. xD
Currently Playing:
Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta
