Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
GW2 Dragons, at least the major ones, are a force of nature. Heck, them just flying over the land causes destruction, they don't even have to think about it. It's like us walking past some ants.
Lol...its funny you mention this OP because I was just complaining about this yesterday to a fellow coworker of mine how tired and overplayed the whole dragon concept is in fantasy oriented games, movies, and entertainment.
Yes, I'm sick of 'em. Just played out. Would love to see more variety than it always seeming to boil down to a dragon or dragons as being the eventual ultimate baddies.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

i aggree with the OP in the sense that the "Dragons-Orcs-Trolls-OH MY!!!" approach to MMOs is getting...well has BEEN getting stale for quite some time now. there will always be "favorites" when it comes to what makes great MMO lore so i'll say that noone who posts in agreement or disagreement is wrong. my opinion just sides more on a sci-fi approach to MMOs. i've always been a fan of the mechwarrior/chromehounds style games, hell any game with large robots for that matter. i've wanted a game with the depth of lore, exploration, crafting, and interaction of the triple A title "fantasy" MMOs in the form of a robot/mech-themed approach or style for a very long time now.
i know there's earthrise, but i'm giving it time to flesh out it's issues first. if it's still around when i decide on that "investment", i'll give it a shot. even still, you're traversing the landscapes on foot or with the typical cycle or car-style "mount". that even gets old when all your mount is is a fast form of transportation. why not make your mount THE primary staple in a players arsenal? sure you can keep the hand-held weapon based combat for on-foot scenarios, but mech-vs-mech combat has ALWAYS been epic in my book.
long story short, i'll take a player operated mech and larger than life robotic raid bosses over a flying hippo-cow and 3 story tall snot-blob monsters (oh... and dragons) any day.
Very much so. It's gotten silly that dragons are always the end all of games too. People beg for new things, different things. And then they want dragons. <.<.

I like the idea of dragons. But now-a-days they are massivly overused, it seems. WoW being what everyone compares things too, I will use it as an example. It has too many dragons. They are everywhere in the WoW universe.
As someone has stated in a previous comment, dragons are amazing and are awe-striking... if used correctly.

Love dragons, fairies and elves too. I think maybe the high fantasy genre is out for the OP. You might want to try low fantasy or non-fantasy games for a bit.

My problem with the "oh, I'm sick of dragons" idea is that it really only takes into account the smallest portion of a person's life when compared to thousands of years of what "dragons" were/are about.
Dragons can be anything. The problem is that most game companies are pretty bad about depciting them. Same with all those horrible fantasy books that are seemingly churned out each year.
And the thing about dragons is that they really were thought to be real.
That's why they have lasted so long. heck there was "evidence" of their reality to back up all the old stories handed down from generation from generation. All the old fables, tales, what have you. There is nothing more scary to the average person of "pick your favorite long past century" than finding evidence that they creatures once existed. And if they "once" existed might they "still" exist?
Of course we now know better. Still, all the dinosaur findings and lord knows what other findings that supported the idea of dragons show us they never existed. Still, there is a certain awe in the idea of huge lizard like beings. Just ask any young boy or girl about dinosaurs and see their wide eyed reverence.
THAT is why dragons might still resonate today.
yet suddently with a few years of playign bad games depicting dragons, in a pretty bad way, they are passe?
Same thing with Angels and Demons I suppose. yet drill down deep enough and the idea of Angels, Demons and Dragons might still stir feelings of awe if only they were not bastardized in some horrid video game franchise in order to make a few bucks.

Dragons should always be a part of a fantasy MMO.

I like my RPG fantasy and my FPS modern or future.
