Paragon Studios has announced a new iteration of its flagship title. Called City of Heroes Freedom, players will have the opportunity to play content for free or take advantage of premium packages. The team plans to launch CoH: Freedom and Issue 21: Convergence later this year. Folks attending the San Diego ComiCon will be able to check out the game as well.
“ Freedom is about getting more content into the hands of our players, whether they are subscribing or playing for free”, said Brian Clayton, Executive Producer at Paragon Studios. “To do this, we’ve looked at City of Heroes from the ground up and focused on three ways to enhance the experience by giving our players more choices, greater rewards and the best content we've ever produced. And for the first time ever, players can choose to enjoy more than seven years of content for free.”

heh.. I knew it wouldn't be long..
I actually had fun with CoH when I played, and the price is about right, so I might give it a spin.

Nice move!
Nice Gonna look forward to really giving this a go at last .
Instead of saying City of Heroes is going free to play, they call it "Freedom" =D
CoH > CO I reckon. I'm definately going to try this, it's especially interesting to see if they stick to their plan of regular story arcs and content updates, I can see this being a clear winner in the F2P games list.
So we are down to one paying Superhero mmo now?
might try this again
I bought City of Heroes, Cty of Villains and Going Rogue all seperately. But it looks like if I chosde to return to the game and play for free I would lose a huge amount of the stuff I had paid for when I bought Going Rogue.
I, personally, don't like this road CoH has been going down for the past year. I'm glad I quit when I did.
This'll be the nail in Champions coffin, there's just no opint in choosing it over CoH if both are free.
Agreed. I've given Champions an honest attempt, and it's just so very much a lesser game compared to CoH.
I loved my mastermind business man person, i'm going to have to remake him.
He had food type names for his thugs like Musterman and lettucehead. It was really funny. Awesome to roleplay. I'm really going to have to give this one a whirl. Might keep me busy for a while, provided it doesn't come out next to when something else i want comes out.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
I'm in. Now that I've stepped away from DCUO for a while, I think I might give CoH a try. I like the 'freemium" models that I've been seeing, giving me the choice to pay when a what I want. If a game is worth it, I'll support it, even F2P games. Subs are fine, but I don't like being tied down by them.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
If you have been a previous subscriber you will keep all your old stuff fro free.. but you will no get any new P2P content unless you pay a subscription or pay for it in the store
This have been a good conversation
At first glance, I did nearly scream with rage at another 'Freebie' model being born, this time within a game I've supported since the first Closed Beta. In seven years time, I've seen the same road, and also have not liked many of the changes, from something challenging yet fun, without gear grinds, to the rampant greed in their Auction House, the copycat, ADD-easy LFG tool from 'that Bliz Monstrosity', and an increase in the Race-To-Endgame mentality that I've abhorred throughout my gaming years. Pretty much why I became a Solo Player, increasing my difficulty level enough so I can relive my soloing Arch-Villain years without the whine of, "Tone down your diff, dude. We have to rush through this to go rush through another mission!".
However, if you've left CoH before, and if you still remember your account info, you'll be put into the Premium Category, and not lose access to all your expansions. At least THAT part of this, ahem, 'Freedom' model won't kick you in the scrote all that hard. You just won't get to create an SG, they only give you 8 character slots without paying, and you still keep any of your Vet rewards you've earned.
I'm just glad I'll be able to transfer some alts to the VIP servers. Not going to like the local and broadcast channels commentary from many of the 'Freefers' on the normal servers for at least a year....:(
It's about time. With the mmo market in transition, only the strong can charge a monthly sub these days. That said I still think CoH is one of the best mmos, and certainly among the most fun to play. I will be playing again now.
What took em so long? Success.
COX has a very faithful playerbase.
And this is not a "CoH goes free" in the sense that they rely on a cash store... it's Fremium in the sense that it's more like a restricted neverending trial.
I'll be interested to see details when they are made available... I hope they follow the lead of Turbine more than Cryptic when they switch.

I probably won't come back for another spin, but CoH is by far the best (most fun) MMO that I've ever played. Loved the Triumph server comunity back in the day.
If you don't worry about it, it's not a problem.
Great news, I think. I really hope they officially out City of Heroes 2 soon, though.
Wait and see, free vs. pay content balance.
