I know GW was extremely popular back in the day.  Is it worth playing (read: spending umpteen hours downloading) today for someone who never played?  I loved DAoC and can still get some enjoyment playing it but I wouldn't bet on people liking it if they played it for the first time today...

Also, do you think being familiar with GW would be of any benefit to the GW2 player whenever it comes out?

I'm lookin for a MMO to kick around in until the next big release and am wondering if GW would be good for that.

Well, you are in the GW2 forums, not the GW.

Personally, I couldn't get into GW. I am looking forward to its sequel.

Doing achievements in GW1 will unlock items, pets and titles for your GW2 account. for more info read :

Yep. And apparently, by posting here, I found someone who could answer my question ;)

Besides, this relates to both games.

Is it worth playing right now?  Hell yeah.  There are still tons of people playing it everyday.  I don't currently play, but I probably will start again later this year before GW2 comes out.  I think it'd be a benifit to play it, even though they are going to be different types of games, just get familar with the universe.  It's a wonderful story and has got great gameplay imo, although there is not too much PvP anymore if that is what you are looking for (it does exist, just not as much as used to, most people in the game nowadays are pve'ers).

Also, achievements you accomplish in Guild Wars will transfer to GW2 with the Hall of Monuments.  Check it out here:

It's worth noting that GW isn't actually an MMO.  Well... I suppose by today's standards, it's as much an MMO as many other games that call themselves that, but back when it was released, it was called a CORPG.

Some people like it (Even people introduced recently), some people don't.

It's hard to tell who will like it or not, since it's its own kind of game, with no exact analogues to compare it to (Ie:  If you liked 'This game', you'll like GW)

GW1 is a great game and is worth playing, both for familiarizing yourself with the GW lore and because its a solid game.

BTW, the GW client is the best client i have ever use, and its downloader is very good.  Depending on your internet, it won't take long at all to download the game in its entirety, and if you really want to speed things up, and you have a friend who has the game, just transfer there .dat file to you computer and you will be playing in minutes (read less than 10).  Other games feel unneccisarily slow for some reason.

I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

I still wouldn't necessarily call GW an MMO even by today's standards. But it is for sure accepted by the MMO community.

GW1 is a great game but it is a CORPG. Don't expect it to be a MMO, expect it to be a mix between DDO and Diablo and you will like it.

The instances and how the game is made makes it different from games like Wow, EQ2 and LOTRO. It do have a lot in common with other CORPGs like DDO, Vindictus, STO and other similar games.

The graphics looks fine enough still, even though it annoys me somewhat that I can't jump. But it is still a great buy, you get a lot for the money (try to get a platinum or trillogy box at your local gaming store, that will be cheapest and plat have everything in it).

The game will be very different from GW2 but it is still challenging even if it takes a little while to get to that part.

I suggest to add ( "C:gamesGuild WarsGw.exe" -image ) to your shortcut. That way you will download everything and wont w8 later for it. After you finish, make new shortcut or remove "-image"

You don't currently play so how will you know if there are more PvEers than PvPers right now? And no, the only pvp that might be lacking people is Codex (which has been given new life with the new update that added Zaishen Strongboxes). Random Arena is still going strong, 8v8 is still quite competitive especially now with the new update. Plenty of pvp mate, on the other hand there are empty PvE safe areas in those far away places and the only time you'll see a large group of people there is if there is a Zaishen daily sending you there.

    This is not a game.

I play and I still don't know. It is almost impossible to compare.

I do know that there are more people PvEing now then when I started just after Nightfall was released. I base that on the fact that I see more players in the outposts. But the way the game is made (instanced) made it hard to compare. And many players play both...

There are some PvE places pretty empty, mostly in "Factions", particularly in Eochwald forest but both PvE and PvP seems highly populated, both on English and American servers.

People are playing both and have fun, I don't see the point of even trying to compare which is most popular as long as neither are close to dead and they ain't.

Of course there are more people in the main towns and outposts. It's because they are trying to sell their z-keys or buy z-keys or some other thing they need to gain more HoM points heh. And I was just trying to correct him on the PvP population whilst letting the OP know that there are going to be some empty outposts along his journey.

    This is not a game.

probably because those people are on their way to ft aspenwood. they go in but don't come out until they remember that there is a jade qurry too. but from what i can tell, most people playing factions are playing pvp in either those two competitive missions or in the alliance battles.
