Microtransactions Not an "If" but a "How" for World of Darkness

KhalathwyrKhalathwyr Member UncommonPosts: 3,133

http://www.evenews24.com/2011/06/22/greed-is-good-purportedly-leaked-internal-bulletin-shows-ccps-refreshing-new-direction/

Can read newsletter pdf near the bottom of above article.

Hmm...reading that article, along with Eve's Lead designer's thoughts on microtransactions just knocked CCP down a notch or three on my list. I was really looking forward to playing an WoD MMO but after reading this...I'm not so sure anymore. Sure, they mention that for "power items" anyone can get the same item with enough time (presumably grinding in game money), but I don't see how it's justified that just because someone pays money they should get the items quicker.

I dunno. Between this and the other goings on with Eve I've been reading about it looking like CCP is giving in to the dark side from their previous position of could hardly do wrong (not perfect, of course).

World of Darkness for me just went from a "purchase, no questions asked" to a very tenative "wait and see". Taking in consideration of the last line in the WoD article section, though, that "wait and see" is very loose at best.

Always wise to check the business model before you install a game.

  • AmarantharAmaranthar Member EpicPosts: 5,852

    A) If gamers are going to accept it, why would any company leave money on the table?

    B) Even if a company launches without it, they add it at some point, because gamers accept it.

    C) Once Micro Transactions are in, at some point when some person in charge needs to bolster earnings, they will start adding Pay-to-Win items. First in small unassuming ways with little complaining, then growing more and more.

It's the nature of things. Give them an inch and they will take a mile. They don't have to keep making their gamer better...that costs money. They can just sell items. Quick, easy, bonus money. Who's gonna turn that down?

    Once upon a time....

All the bonus items in the world won't mean a thing unless the game is fun first.  If it's not fun people will not spend the money.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

Heh i see you 'forgot' to mention that CCP stated that the newsletter i not official policy rather it presents a scenario and asks employees to give exaduated ideas. In other words its not policy. Once again a storm in a teacup.

I'll make my mind up about WoD when it arrives rather than discounting the game due to the grumblings over MT in a completely different one. There are plenty of comanies out there with multiple games using different methods of making money.

Overreacting isn't going to help anyone.

  • SagasaintSagasaint Member UncommonPosts: 466

micro? they have nothing of micro, its more on the "macro" and dangerously close to the "mega" side

and yep, not touching WoD with a ten foot pole. RMT is bad per se, but >I can see that F2P games need revenue.

in a P2P game its plain unjustified greed

  • tawesstawess Member EpicPosts: 4,227

The way i see it is that if they do micro transactions they might actually be able to licens real world brands for the clothing (since that will be  BIG thing in this game... trust me VtM/WoD players are VERY picky with how their characters look)  instead of the generic almost stuff we get otherwise.  So your Venture Ancilla might actually be sporting a real Armani suite and so on and so forth...

And as long as they do not sell anything that is a game advantage (XP potions does not count here.. i could care less how quick others level up as long as the leveling speed is not based on using them) i could not care less if they have a cash shop.

This have been a good conversation

Good news! Does that mean that the game is f2p?

    "Real"?

Yeah you know... like levis... Armani, Adidas CK and so on and so forth...

Basically the concept would work like this

In the game you can for in game cash buy "generic" clothes of made up brands like Golconda street wear Inner circle shoes Thamaturgy Gothing Faschion and so on... Just like it always have.

But in the cash shop you can buy "real" Adidas shoes, real CK clothes real Gucc for your character to wear.. Since basically the world will be set in "our" reality.. just darker and filled to the brim with mystical forces... That way every one wins.

Have you ever worked for a corporation? Of notable size I mean, not some mom and pop local deal. If so then you'd know that by reading the last few lines I cited to read, which I guess you didn't, that when they say:

The question of virtual goods sales is not "to do or not to do". Rather, it's "how do we do this". For the yet unpublished World of Darkness, the details are foggy, but the philosophy is strong.

Now, I'm not sure where you've been the last few years but it is not uncommon at all for game companies, or any for that matter, to do PR damage by saying "It's not official policy" when something that is negatively received is leaked. That said, they have made this (highlighted in blue above) "strong" stance on this policy behind closed doors from the public, so I'd bet 10 to 1 it IS official policy right now.

If it changes, so much the better. That said, I would not be looking forward to a subscription based game with MT or even a solely MT based game. Give me a flat rate fee and access to all itmes with investure of my time.

CCP already have 'pay to win' items in Eve with the plex. Buy a pile of plex, convert it to isk and hey, you've just bought a pile of ingame currency for rl cash. I know the arguements about how isk doesn't equal skill or that only clueless nubs do this and waste their cash etc. But its all one and the same thing. Ingame advantage (however large or small) gained through rl cash.

    starts crying.....

couldn't open the pdf, so can't see what it actually says, but this doesn't sound good.  On the one hand, if they do it for meaningless items (name brands vs. generic), all well and good, but if it even remotely looks like a pay to win or even pay to do better scenario, then this game will be as ruined for me as SWG and WoW.  I could even live with them selling "advertisements", as the items that exist in the real world exist in WoD, as long as they did it with a little creativity and imagination.

This game was going to be my next EQ/DAoC, hopefully if they do MT's, they will institute them properly so as not to kill immersion in the game world.  If it was solely White Wolf's call, I wouldn't be to worried about it, but with CCP calling the shots......

pffft.. like they will ever finish WoD anyway.

    to me its vaporware.

even if they start focusing on it after Dust.. i dont see it coming out this decade.

Don't you think it is a bit of a kneejerk reaction to say it will have this and that as we have noto even seen the final form of the shop for EVE yet... You do not know what a power item is.. i do not know what a power item is... Nor do we know exatcly how it will work in the end... Not to say i have no concerns dor how they MIGHT use their item store but having played APB it seems it can actually work. The only thing i am a bit worried over is if they choose to go the "grin-fest" route and pretty much force you to buy a XP-potion to gain any even half decent XP. Apart from that i could not care less as PvP will most likley be a mess any way.

That goes for single-player games as well.

Nice .. does that mean that SP games are going free too? There already some on the iOS.

Not really, if you look at EVE, it is P2P + P2W (pay to win). Which is just mind-bogglingly dumb.

WoD isnt even in alpha testing.  Theyre still laying out the graphics engine through EVEs incarna o.o  Which means WOD will sitll have a LONG way to go.  Im guessing around 4 years as the fastest but will most likely be out by 5 o.o

Maybe. If it does pan out that way then I guess I'll have to do as you allude to in your thread about MT and get out of playing MMOs. Good thing is I've recently gotten my friends to expand out from Warhammer and 40K table-top to World War II miniature war gaming so it won't be like I'm losing any gaming free time.

No, I don't think it's a knee-jerk reaction to say it'll have this because the company making the game states for you in plain english, in black and white, that it will. I just repeated what they said. If the source wasn't their own company newsletter and written by someone who has an affect on the direction the game takes, then you could start flinging "knee-jerk" at people. Unfortunately, that isn't the case.

And again, if you read the article slowly and carefully they give a very clear idea of what they mean by "power item". Especially since they label two other types of MT items they want to sell, "cosmetic" being one of them.
