I actually agree with the OP to some point. While the textures and polygons looks like something from the 90's, then the overall color scheme is much appreciated. I tried a lot of other MMO's and either they are all black or very dark tones and that is just depressing to look at for longer periods of time - and that isn't too smart in an MMO - variation is key.
The animations in WoW is far superior to any other MMO I've tried so far - sadly. It's nice to see feet actually following the pace at which you are running, so it doesn't look like you are doing some weird moonwalking or sort of gliding in space. It "feels" right.
So while there's a lot of room for improvement, then it is still one of the best overall graphics in an MMO.
Every time I play a game that makes my video card cry, I go back to nethack and enjoy running around as "@" for a while.
I don't want photorealistic graphics, I want to play a game. After a month or two of playing a game, I don't even see the graphics any more - my imagination and reflexes have completely blinded me to them.

I concur. Except the graphics are meant to look that way. It's supposed to remind us all of where we came from, in terms of how MMOs were years ago. Amazing storylines, great graphics, the best animations around.. it's a good time to be a WOW player.
I hope you guys are aware that you are not in fact talking about graphics but you are talking about Aesthetics.
Aesthetics is how good the game looks, Graphics is mainly hardware stuff and in that case WoW does not have the greatest graphics with their polygons but they do have great Aesthetics.
Age of conan, highest graphical fidelity and IMO definitely the best art direction in an MMORPG. Aion is probably second on the fidelity and Allods Online (free-2-play) on the art direction.
Well im gonna disagree with the op on this one. I think wows graphics are very cartoonish, and for my taste i want realistic as possible.
I guess Mortal online or Xyson Conan and Entropia are more realistic and fit my taste better.
Wow was purposely given these low quality graphics so that it can run smoother on all systems even very low end systems can run the game.
I really think the looks of a game are totaly opionated to the player. and just because a game has 11.5 million subs does not mean the game is the best on the market, what it does mean is they have the largest player base. To me star trek had fairly good graphics but the game was so damn easy it was a waste of my money. I was level capped in 20 days of game play. Warhammer was also a pretty good game and good graphics but again level capped in 30 days. Conan has far better graphics and annimations that WOW and it also had issues that caused me to loose interest.
I guess its all in the eye of the beholder.
played M59,UO,lineage,EQ,Daoc,Entropia,SWG,Horizons,Lineage2.EQ2,Vangaurd,Irth online, DarkFall,Star Trek and many others that did not make the cut or i just plain forgetting about.
I have to disagree with OP from a personal viewpoint and I also do not think that 11.5mil players means they mainly playing it for it's graphics. But on a technical viewpoint I can agree cause character and world fit right together, where many high end graphic MMORPG often have character details differently then the world around them.
The animations however are one of the better kind in this genre.

The last part "Its all in the eye of the beholder", I like, cause then I always think about other MMOs that have "Beholders", and they tend to have like 8 eyes, so what are they ALL looking at? .. Anywho, I agree on this stuff Sabbath said, Age of conan is more to my taste than WoW ever was. Aion is a beautiful game too (again, to me, opinion). I got lost in both games, unlike WoW, I never got lost in it. And to speak on other aspects as well while we are here, I will admit WoW has some solid stuff going for it, and when you have that, and other games DON'T, yeah, your gonna have more people playing it, thats just common sense. I by no means am saying WoW is better than the rest, I only point out that I am not hating on it as much as my soul wants me too. I won't bring up the one other game that we all know deep down had better crafting, missions, community, player driven markets, story, professions, housing.. *stops his Han Solo sarcastic tone rant*... Hope I didnt give it ALL away *smiles while diving under a table to escape the youngsters upcoming remarks*
WoW doesn't have very advanced and realistic graphics but it sure looks nice. Most Blizzard games use this kind of graphics and it actually does wonders for thier games. Their graphics age well. I still find Diablo 2 visually okay even after so many years which is something I can't say for 99% of the games which are that old.
As for animations, WoW is the MMO with the best animations imo. They are smooth and responsive and no MMO out there can even come close to it!

Totally agree with the underline part, they have the smoothest animation ( minus male human running ) ive ever seen, especially the combat.
And they always goes back to fine tune the graphics, eg, different effect for spells of lock.
Graphic wise i think its due to the theme they are going, as a follow up from the rts series, and of course its a ble to cater to a wider player base with the low requirement

WOW may have good graphics, I wouldn't know, that isn't really something I judge and MMORPG on so I'll leave it to those in this thread who do.
But the number of subscribers is not an indicator of good the graphics are or are not, but rather the result of probably a half a hundred factors that came together in a "perfect storm" combination to help it roll over the marketplace.
It's unfortunate reallly that it happened, it ended up in limiting diversity in the AAAMMORPG market which we're still trying to break 7 years later, and with any luck we'll see some interesting new ideas in upcoming titles.

WARNING: Extreme level of sexy below! Look at your own risk:
For me it would be, Aion, Lord of the Rings Online, or the Final Fantasy online games.
I'm with you on the first two. I think STO would be my 3rd.
Aion is an "aiight" game. Their graphics leave a lot to be desired though. Good story lines though.
Lotro is in the same boat as Aion with their graphics, but they have decent plots.
Out of all of them, I think WOW has the most original, creative, storylines and plots out there.

That's how I feel about RuneScape.
RuneScape's graphics are better than WoW's.

I hope you update your dictionary now that you've discovered a new usage in the wild.
OP if you said aminations, I would have to agree, but on the graphics, no.
Rift, AoC, FFXIV and Aion (at least on the characters) all look better.
WoW art style works for it, and has held up well.

It is highly unlikely that 11.5m play WoW mainly for the graphics.
You might as well say that WoW has the best mailboxes, 11.5m ppl cant be wrong.
To me the best graphics in the MMO genre has to be Age of Conan (AoC)..
