I use to play this game alot until I got into Heroes of Newerth, which is a much better game than LoL. . Be prepared for a foul community in both games, if you arnt "pro" enough you will get insulted by some of the vilest gamers ive ever come across online, so your going to need a tough skin. But these DOTA style games are damn competive and as addictive as crack once you learn the ropes. Contrary to what the writer tells you this game is no way a MMO and has little persistant elements even less than Modern Warfare and that isnt a MMO.,
LoL has more mmo elements than HoN which is a exact copy of Dota.. so why not just play the original?
LoL is more unique
Well Lol has no MMO elements in my opinion other than your account leveling up, DOTA is really old now and looking old. And after playing HON I can not get back into LOL at all ive tried, it just feels wrong for some reason like easymode.
Also LoL really isnt that more unique other than it has some different heroes and brush you can hide in and alot of the intresting elements like denying and gold lost on death has been removed, in HON i dont have to grind IP for runes to stay competive in top tier and unlock champs, In hon I just play I dont need to spend any other money other than the price of the game which cost me like nothing at the time. Also HON has better stats and replays.

I'm not sure how anyone can confuse any of these games as an MMO. The game solely consists of instances involving a maximum of 10 players. It could possibly be defined as an MORPG (Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) since it does have some rpg elements, but it is certainly not massive.
Could be massive in the sense of the amount of players.
You stil lget leveling up your summoner, unlocking summoner spells and also runes slots.
Every game that is played online fits that description. I may be wrong, but I was under the assumption that the massive in MMO referred to the amount of players in the same world/instance.
I have to say I'm not surprised LOL is featured here. However it is not the best of it's kind. LOL is the Runes of Magic of the F2P MOBA genre while DOTA is the Everquest and HON is the World of Warcraft. Why do I say this?
LOL is F2P but you don't start on equal foooting with everyone. You need to unlock stuff that makes you better in game. Sure after a few months you will unlock all you need and will be on equal footing but that either takes time or money. However in HON you pay $30 and you have a lifetime subscription with no incentive to pay anymore for the game other than stat resets or cosmetics.
That said, play what suits you. There are far more 13 year olds playing LOL so be warned. However the 20+ crowd in HON aren't exactly angels.
So I'm looking forward to your HON post later on since this site now decided to include MOBA in it's discription of MMORPG.
Denying is hardly counter intuitive. In fact denying adds another layer of skill to HoN (and DOTA) that LOL doesnt have. HON is also faster paced and requires more teamwork and strategy. It also has a MUCH better interface when it comes to launching a game, crashes less, and is over all more refined and simply a more well made game. On top of all that the Matchmaking system works far better it has comprehensive Stat tracking, it is more competitive, etc. etc.. Like FastTx said LoL is like the Runes of Magic of MOBA's.
I'll give LoL one thing though, it does have more Unique Heroes.
If it didnt feel like I was playing LoL in slow motion compared to every other MOBA maybe I would give it another chance, but even watching the Dreamhack finals was so boring that I ended up just turning it off and watching something else.

HON the WoW of the MOBA genre? Please.. stop right there.
Wow is famous because of the high number of subscriptions.
Now think which one of these two has more players? HoN or LoL?
I'll give you a tip: it's not HoN.
I've played Dota, I've played HoN and I've played LoL. And my opinion is that LoL is better than all. And better things to come, as they keep rolling in money.
That's right! It wasn't me who was wrong. It was the world!

How is killing your own team not counter-intuitive? When you first played a MOBA, was your first reaction to kill your own units? Sure, after playing DotA or HoN long enough, denying becomes second nature, but you would be lying if without prior knowledge, your first game you denied.
Denying does not add another layer of skill. The skill that denying uses is no different from the skill required to last hit; however, it does require the player to manage and be aware of the health of more units.
Matchmaking, we can give HoN the advantage.
More Competitive? I would like to know your definition of competitive. LoL has more competitors. LoL has more spectators (dreamhack proved that by a landslide). LoL has more in terms of cash prizes through the tournament year.
So do you control a team of 5 champions in this or is it a 1 player controls 1 champion deal? And are they all available to choose at the start or do you need to buy/unlock certain champions?
" however, it does require the player to manage and be aware of the health of more units."
Thats where the extra skill comes in. Also, denying is used for more reasons than just killing you own units to prevent the opposing team from getting more XP. One of these other reasons is to keep the emey creep wave pushed up closer to your tower to set up ganks/have tower protection.
LoL does have more spectators mainly because its free. Most of the top level teams play both games and 99% of them will tell you HoN is a more competitive game because it caters to the competitive "hardcore" style of play, and not to new players who like playing in Slo-mo. The only reason they even play LoL is because of the prize money.
The thing that really pushes it over the edge for me is that if you are good at HoN you are good at LoL too, but if you are good at LoL it doesnt mean you are good at HoN. For instance on the rare occasion that I do play LoL i will literally stomp the opposing team single handedly getting 15-20 kills with 0-2 deaths. Some people think this is fun but I prefer more teamwork and would rather struggle to keep a 1.5:1 K:D Ratio in HoN than constantly go 20-0 in LoL anyday because its more fun to be Challenged.
I play Sona main and love nothing more than ending a game with 25-35 assists and by endgame having some enemies really foaming at the mouth and doing anything in their power to try to kill me as I wisk away :P But haven't played it in about a month, I think I was summoner level 22-23.
As they said though this is definitely not a pay-to-win game. But given the sheer # of champions there are there will always be some Champions around who seem a bit OP. But honestly I think I have seen pretty much every Champion there is get their rear kicked at some point by someone so there is balance. Due to all the combos possible though there are just sometimes it doesn't matter if you have a good team or not, you'll lose. Just the synergy factor of various teams. As I said I play Sona most and sometimes I make a good team great, other times I feel pretty damn useless(but I was starting to be able to tell when that was going to happen and picking to play Cho'Gath or someone else) :P
If there is any champ who is pure easy retardo dumdum mode it is Shaco in the hands of a really good player. He is just ultra-lame to get stuck in a game with at times.

ELO is easily abused by people constantly making new accounts (Since the game is FREE) to stomp on the lower level players. It doesnt really mean anything, you can even be a terrible player and have high ELO. Likewise you could have a high MMR in HoN and suck too.

My point was, if you make an account in LoL, after playing HoN, of course you are going to stomp, but if you play a bit, get into higher elo, you will find you won't stomp people.
I disagree with terrible players having high ELO, for the most part, the higher your ELO, the better the player, you can even see this for yourself playing through the ELO ranks.
I could probably bring myself to like the game even without denying and everything else it doesnt have.
But what I cant stand is how SLOW the game is up until the final 2 or 3 minutes of the game. I also cant stand that I effectively have to launch the game twice and wait 5min for everyone to load before every match. Or how you don't have access to every hero from the start, or how someone on the opposite team can pick the same hero as you.

My understanding for LOL and HON is they are filled with a horrible community. So, that is a negative to me.
In LoL only part of community is bad (the outspoken ones) they may blame you for a game when you have no idea what they said(ex. You feed them to much, Why don't Juggle?, and then ask what they mean and no response.) Some of them are nice, You just have to ignore the evil ones.

Its more like LoL is like WoW
and HoN is like EQ2, the ugly copy with more advanced graphics that only the hc fans enjoy.
If WoW = The Beatles

1 player one champion deal
you have 10 random from all pool / week that are free to play
you need to unlock/buy the others by playing games and making points or easy way by paying moneh

Oh, and Dota2 should be better than both LoL and HoN and rumors are it will be Free like LoL.. so I guess this argument will be pointless ~6months.
If only LoL had an ELO system.
Ohwait.
Also I forget, what is HoN?
Its sad that people start to see these games as MMORPGs which they arent ...
If you start saying LoL / HoN or Dota are MMOs so whats about
MW2 / BFBC 2? ... You see the point i want to say.

LoL is awesome. been playing it a lot lately. good, quick, rewarding fun. better than any MMo out right now for sure
