General: E3 2011: Neverwinter Overview

The D&D setting of Neverwinter is one of the most beloved locations ever created. Cryptic Studios has taken on the monumental task of creating an MMO based in and around the city of Neverwinter. At E3 2011, MMORPG.com's Joe Iuliani had the opportunity to attend a presentation by Cryptic showcasing Neverwinter. Read on and then let us know your thoughts about Neverwinter in the comments below.

For any of you old school RPG players you can think of the persistent world of Neverwinter as developer-created modules. They’ll be sure to please and great to advance a character, but the dungeons your friends design always seemed to have that unique edge to them. To that end Cryptic Studios introduces The Foundry to Neverwinter.

A great idea that will go far in giving the game a more D&D campaign feeling than DDO has.  Hopefully though Cryptic will have a "content checker" that will look over the material prior to it being put into the game to keep the griefers, hate callers etc.... out of the world.

Vendetta Online already has something like this - a player developement group, they write the stuff and set it up, then it goes to the company to make sure it's OK and then it goes into the game.  No direct player into game action.

It would be nice if Cryptic did something like this.  Can't see anyone enjoying going to an NPC for a quest and having him tell you to F! Off.

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter

I guess it only makes sense that Cryptic, the master of content-less MMORPGs, shifts the burden of content creation to the player.

This idea kinda intrigues me. I have always wanted to come up with a thieves guild type scenario.

By being able to control the content and dialogue you could build in a special password required to be in the thieves guild and get the quests to steal something or assassinate a person. Very interesting and I hope to take a peek into this when it comes out.

Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.

It's Cryptic , if you want to know exactly what the game will be like play Champions Online, that'll give you a great idea of what to expect. The game will be very linear and not much to it . The only part that will be of any value will be the player generated content and that'll be narrow scoped assest .  This game was designed by Cryptic's own admission within a 24 mo window . To see the player generated content in action borrow someone's account , if you can, at STO.  It sounds better then it is. Oh and less we forget , the C-Store will be a key element to the functioning and play of this game.

I wouldn't touch this game at any price.

I love the whole idea of UGC in an MMORPG, I think user generated content tooling fits MMO's perfectly, I always thought that Neverwinter Nights should have a proper 3rd game in its series, with even more freedom, depth and network possibilities than the NWN editor had.

Just imagine, player made world servers as seen in NWN but then with the option to link more of them together into a whole cluster of player made world and realms, where your character could travel from one player made realm to another player made realm, where hundreds of other players adventured through those realms and where admins and GM's added to the richness of those worlds from time to time like DM's do in a PnP RPG.

Bioware's NWN already came surprisingly far towards that ideal with even that first attempt, progression into that line of development  when it would be done in these times, 10 years later with the current available computer and networking power, has the potential to fulfill that ideal even better.

Not that I expect Cryptic's Neverwinter to be an upgrade of Bioware's NWN's tooling options. Still, I hope they manage to make the Foundry a useful and well integrated feature in Neverwinter, will sure be fun to play around with.

I actually had a great time with CO, it had a lot of good ideas and its own distinct atmosphere, it was only light in the content department. Graphics wise I also didn't have anything to complain about with Cryptic's MMO's, CO looked pretty fantastic.

A better comparison of what to expect might be STO, there the Foundry has been implemented recently as well.

Yeah, but it is not such a bad idea. Since they are rather lazy themselves this might actually give us a lot to do anyways, if it is made right.

While a lot of the content will be crap I am sure some stuff will be really good, Biowares NWN had some really good user created stuff. As long as they have some kind of way to see how good something is (let us give a score after we completed something) it actually have a potential.

I don't have much confidence in Cryptic, and I really don't like what Wizards of the coast turned D&D in lately (4th edition sucks badly) but I will still try this one out. I just wish they used the "Pathfinder" mechanics instead of the 4th ed.

    Another rehash game..

I love forgotten realms but is this what we've come too.. everybody is excited about a 30+ year old storyline and

they ignore the creator of the storylines (salvatore) new ventures in video games.

Shun the creative.. long live rehashes.

all silliness aside.. I think the mmo community wants something new and unique... not a seventh or eight take on an (albeit excellent) storyline.

My point being , not that it was a horrible game , just about as deep as a kiddy wading pool. As to your point Cryptic isn't anywhere near capable of doing what you'd hope. Which is a shame, since I like you train of thought on it. They are more interested in the cash grab they could perpetrate on the public.  What'll happen when they run out of High Value IP's to stain ?

When I first saw this I had heard it would be single player, and I was happy to ignore it. Then Atari started to make moves to sell cryptic and I hoped they would be taken off the job. Now I just hope they don't screw up so bad that D&D dies from it. So far they have yet to make a decent game.

I think there will be some good Foundry missions like there are in STO. I just hope they get the rewards situation figured out or going to be some upset people. Exp is one thing, but I want some loot! I don't know about this point system.

I have to agree with AG-Vuk, just one look at cryptic's current titles and i have very little hope for this. Real shame being i loved the neverwinters series :(

" Neverwinter is aiming to bring the classic feel of Dungeons & Dragons to the MMORPG genre."

I think MMORPG.com should clear this up, Neverwinter is "not" an MMORPG. It is an online story based co-op game, Cryptic has been very clear about this from the start. Don't expect MMO features in Neverwinter or you will be setting yourself up for disappointment. Still I think this is a great setting for their foundry system and look forward to it's release. I think the only thing that could make this better would be for DM feature for those that like to play in a more classic style.

? I didn't experience CO to be a buggy game, it was pretty smooth and polished, especially when compared with buggier launches.

CO was light in amount of content, but that which was in it was fun while it lasted.

You're right, of course. But then again, Vindictus, DDO and GW are also CORPG's, still they're listed here on the MMO list, and generally all these 3 are treated and regarded as MMORPG's on various MMO sites as well.

What exactly is an MMO feature? To have boring solo-quest that persist throughout the game to funnel people to the top level, whereupon they run the same raid over and over again in an attempt to get a piece of gear?

Get over yourself, guy. The most popular MMOs are poorly done single player games until you've reached an arbitrary level to start raiding.

Someone needs to lighten up and stop getting so defensive over nothing, I call the game what Cryptic called the game. ;)

Didn't all the previous interviews with a guy name Jack said its not a MMO and repeatedly kept emphasizing and avoiding the term MMO and use the term OMG , Online multiplayer game?

I have been a fan of Cryptic sinds City of heroes and the worlds the make are nice the games they made for atari do have the problem of being very low content wise.

As in both CO and STO had almost no content en felt like games that where only 25% done.

having said that i have a livetime sub for both CO and STO as i know that if you give them time the do get there right now CO and STO are getting a lot of work done and they are both nice games and fun to play.

I will look into NWN as it is both a francise i like and as it will give a lot of power to the players in the UGC.

Right now there are a lot of missions in STO made using the foundry that are gems pure and simple and as has been said the foundry that is used there is only partly the foundry that will be used in NWN so i have hope for it.

O and yes there are also missions that stink but those get moved to the bottem of the list real fast so are not realy a problem.

If not for Cryptic behind this title I would be a lot more excited. As it is, I will take a wait and see attitude and hope for the best. As a huge fan of all things DnD I will keep my fingers crossed that Cryptic experiences some real inspiration and delivers a title worth playing.

yeah it is not a mmo, but it is a multiplayer game so I let it be on here, it is being made by a company that makes mmos, or used to anyway.

I know exactly what this game is gonna be, and I know exactly what I expect out of it, Im not on some type of hype train, what I want is a multiplayer game that i can team up with my friends that  I used to play dnd with before lives got too busy to get together regurlarly and do some dnd dungeons once a week or so.  the game is supposed to be free to play or no monthly sub at least, so therefore i can pick it up when i want to.

I know cryptic has put out shallow games and dont exactly have a sterling reputation, but city of heroes was  a great game that is still going today and is one of my alltime favorite games also.  co and sto i think wouldve been great games if they were set up to be free to play, i think the content was a little light for a sub fee game.  some people need to back up a second though and not continously bash a title before it comes out just because its cryptic.  they might of learned from their mistakes, I say at least give the game a chance before you bash it, the screenies look very good.  besides it cant really be any worse than the previous gazillion games that have come out over the last 6 or so years trying to copy wow and what is probably gonna be coming out in the next several years trying to copy wow, so chill out and give it a chance, but dont hold your breath for cryptic to do something right, you might die.

If it can match bioware's nwn, as well as being subscription free, I'll be interested. It'll be ages before decent player content will available though.

I only quit playing nwn1 to play wow, all it really needed was a better graphics engine. To be honest I had far better gaming experiences on the small servers (20-64 players) of nwn over 2 years, than the bulk of the 6 years of playing wow.
