No one on stage said that at Fan Faire. Nor does eq2wire credit any soe employee with saying those words.
SOE already said it was a mutual agreement and that makes plenty of sense.
In fact Smedley just told G4TV why it was closed down
"Smedley cited business reasons, the way the product had performed, and the fact that Star Wars the Old Republic is on the way soon from EA as contibuting to the decision to end the title."
Why is everyone working so hard to find a reason that a game with a terrible reputation and an anemic population for the cost of the license is being closed down?

Yeah and Smedley has a history of telling it like it is huh? Why is he avoiding the questions from the fans? Only things I've seen from Smedley is care bear interviews without any answers to any questions the fans have. LA hasn't had a single comment on the subject.
As for your last question on why we care. Have you played SWG? If not then you have no right to ask that and judge the game as you are. If you have played then you know it's not the game it's the community and we are being bull dozed while being told there is another game with Star Wars in the title so go there and we'll love it. The 2 games are nothing alike so shouldn't we be the judge of that? SOE and LA have avoided every question we have and will not tell us why when there are proven methods to continue and even grow the game. We are all life long Star Wars fans but LA is disenfranchising us with their silence when we the fans that made them the icon they are, are being ignored. Yes they owe us answers, not the answers we are getting but the answers to the questions the fans are asking not someone else. We paid the monthly bills, we bought the merchandise, movies, happy meals, endless things throughout our lives so yes they owe us answers.
Why would anyone really want to save this game, at least in its present form.. lets face it.. SWG has been a joke for years.
isnt it kinder to bury the dead....
Okay, how about all comments about Star Wars Galaxies and all the flaws it has and all the stuff SoE did before to ruin it and everything after... How about because we the customers/fan base/the underdogs, had someone speak for us, make a decision for us without even asking how we felt about it. Because we spent so much time, effort and money into that game. Do any of you like decisions being made for you? In the world we live in now, decisions are being made for us that don't ever benefit us. Yes, we are the underdogs trying to save a game that came to mean so much to us. I'm sure some of you guys have been around a long time and have seen a lot of games come and go and if you EVER spent any sort of time in Star Wars Galaxies, a game that offers such a variety of things to do, you would know what I was talking about. Those people that loved the game so much before pre-NGE and SoE did what they did, you all signed a petition and yes, nothing happened, they turned their backs on you, don't you for once, want to see something positive happen for those of us who love the game just as much as you did, come out on top? This is about standing up for something you believe in and not being run over by a big corporation concerned more about making money than caring about their fan base. Why not stand up and cheer for the underdogs instead of sending scathing remarks or jeers at us? Why not support your fellow gamers for standing up and TRYING to save something so beloved to us? Most of us would still pay hard earned money to play this game to keep it going. I work hard for my money and I have bills like everyone else, but I still would pay.
I know that there are those of you out there rolling your eyes at what I just said, but I speak from my heart and we have to at least try, so please, please, please.. don't ridicule us for what we are trying to do. Give us your support (no matter how lame you think the reason is) do it because you have hearts and because as gamers, we all share the same thing in common, the love of immersing oneself into a fantasy world where you can disappear in just for a little bit before you have to go back to the reality of your real life.
What about all of you still playing that did not stand up for the community and the game when the NGE hit?
Had YOU supported the Pre-NGE version, maybe non of us would had been out of SWG this December.
This is Karma.
Agreed, Vets warned this would happen and guess what... it did. This corpse of a game being around for all these years has now finally bit the last and only hand that would feed it.

The hundreds of thousands that played it and left on a monthly basis after launch will have a different viewpoint. I think it had some a few nice features but overall was lacking in too many things to justify a subscription.
If this were true, then the game would have shut down in October 2003.
Just slightly overstated. Come back and try again.
What's overstated? The game had at it's peak 350k subs and sold 1mil boxes. That's hundreds of thousands of people who tried the game and didn't stay subbed.
The way it was phrased implied "hundreds of thousands every day" LEFT. I don't think that's what was meant, but good luck getting any intellectual honesty around here.
I said that hundreds of thousands left on a monthly basis after launch. That isn't opinion. It is fact. I'm not saying the game didn't have a decent base once all those people left. But it did have hundreds of thousands of people who tried it and left. And since it's apparently okay to use "What I've heard" as a basis for an argument I'll add that the reason for not liking it based on my personal experience and others "that I've heard" is that it didn't feel like Star Wars, it was incredibly boring and was too unstable. You guys can argue how GREAT Pre-CU SWG was until you're blue in the face but it isn't going to change my opinion of it nor anyone else that actually experienced it.
I wonder how many of those votes are from people that have multiple signups?
That's an interesting question, because SWG preCU/NGE had more than a few cases of individuals with multiple accounts, so that they could have several toons on the same server. Under the original setup of SWG, it was one toon a server, until you unlocked your Jedi toon, per account.
One of the things that damaged SWG when they introduced the CU and its logical successor, the NGE, is that they alienated a lot of people who had multiple accounts, which exacerbated their subscription loss...far more than a similar trauma would on most other games, where usually you only have a single account, but can have multiple toons on a single server, as you see in WoW.
If you tick off one individual who has say four accounts, you'lve lost four times the revenue if they cancel them all. I recall one player on Ahazi who had 12 accounts.
If u click the link it looks like all you need to sign the petition is a valid e-mail address, so in theory could be even fewer individuals that have signed it.

Where do you get that hundreds of thousands left on a monthly basis? Just how many copies of the game do you think went on sale during release?
SOE said in a press release that SWG sold 1.5 million UNITS of the game, which included the 3 expansion packs. SWG has some 300-350 players after release, so I highly doubt it was losing hundreds of thousands of players a month or anytime before the NGE.
Furthermore the former SWG lead developer stated the game was losing 10k players a month prior to the CU and that was what spurred SOE to make the changes.
As for you not liking pre-cu SWG, thats fine and many didn't. Several hundred thousand did enjoy it enough to pay a monthly fee for it, but again that doesn't mean SWG was ever a quality product that was properly managed. It was and always has been a mess of a game.

No Smedley doens't have a history of telling the truth, but he doesn't have a history of publically taking the blame for someone else screwing his company over either. I really doubt that Lucas Arts screwed SOE over by not allowing them to renew and then Smedley walked out to the media and took the blame.
It sounds like you want these companies to tell you answers that will somehow make things better and not tell you the truth of the situation. Honestly, how many companies do you think would have run the train wreck that SWG is with the tiny population it has had for years? Players should be thanking SOE for running the game for as long as they did, because I really doubt you could name another major company that would.
All the purchases of movies, happy meals and other merchanidise have no effect on the situation. Nor does it mean there is some deep secret about SWG that is being kept from the players. The basic simple truth is the game is old, has a very bad reputation and both companies decided to close it.
if you want Galaxies back, just get people to not play ToR. If its a generic game like I think it is (nly depending on the name of Star Wars) then maybe you have a shot. But its a very tiny one. There are way too many people willing to play crappy MMOs, just look at WoW or better yet, the korean MMOs with hundreds of millions of players.
The game needs to die. There is way too much bad blood from the CU, NGE and all the lies that Smedley gave to the SWG community. Let it die, fade away and let a new Star Wars franchise take over.
If you just read everything I just wrote and it didn't hit home in one tiny way or another, then I don't know what else I can say to make you see why this means so much.
I'm just like everyone here, I love to game.
People have stressful lives, jobs, etc and people enjoy gaming just to forget about RL just for a bit.
Lets just forget about all the ways SoE/LA screwed the game, again, don't you care that there are people out there trying to make a difference for others? Yes, its a game, I know this. Our government screws us over each and every day with decisions that they think are best for us and you know as I said before, it hasn't benefitted me at all with any decision they have EVER made. These guys at SoE and Lucas, we all know for them its all about killing SWG to make room for ToR. If they had brains, they would have known that people playing SWG would have least tried the game or even played it right alongside ToR. This is all about money. The two games could have co-existed with each other.
This is a David and Goliath story. End of.
Sure, they could co exist but it's a waste of resources. Not to mention the added benefit of any part of SWG's old population going to TOR and helping it grow. And you said it yourself, it's about the money. It's about the bottom line and there is no room for SWG anymore.

1st off I want to ask you what dog do you and every other naysayer have in this hunt? What is going on with SWG is between SOE, LA and the paying players. I don't give a rats arse what you play and I'm not going to insult whatever it is because I have no business in it. If you and everyone else want to knock around SWG then go pay and play it and then you have a right to try and knock us down but until then shut up and go to whatever it is you do and leave us alone.
Our complaint is SOE and LA are completely avoiding the people that do still play and enjoy SWG. No explanation or analysis is needed by any one but the people involved so where do forum trolls come in? Don't answer because you don't have one. All you want to do is troll something that looks fun for you to P people off with.

If you want to have conversations that can only involve people who have paid subscriptions, perhaps you will have better luck posting on the official SOE SWG forums. This is a public forum, so please don't get upset when the general gaming public comes to discuss a topic. However to answer your question, I have an active account, but I fail to see how that makes the information I present somehow truer than it already was.
Now, that being said. What exactly are SOE/LA avoiding that you think they are hiding? It has been discussed at at Fan Faire. There are a number of interviews giving details about the closing. The announcement was pretty clear.
Honest question, what questions from the fans are not getting answered and what do you think the outcome would be if they were?

Here is another tidbit from SOE Fanfair, right from the transcripts. So what lies are they telling? Honestly anybody could see this comming.
Linda “Brasse” Carlson coming to the stage. Dressed as a dwarf of course, but with a light saber.
Talking about Star Wars Galaxies.
It breaks the heart of everyone at SOE that this world has to come to an end. It was felt throughout the company when the announcement was made. The admiration and feeling we have for the players is strong. 2003-2011 wasn’t long enough for me, but it is a long time for an MMO.
Showing a video made by the SWG developers.
EQ2Wire Exclusive: It is unfortunate that LucasArts wanted to terminate the contract not only on Star Wars Galaxies but SWG The Card Game to avoid any confusion with SW:TOR by BioWare. And this is not supposition, it’s confirmed by 2 sources in the industry. SOE didn’t want to end the game.
I hope that you will join us in the last few months of Star Wars Galaxies. We have many events planned. Be with us and share the dream for the rest of the year.

Because I am not all that represents the "Vets" I will answer my own history.
To be frank - I play and have played other MMO's since SWG. WAR and FE (tried EVE not my bag of chips) so Yes I did move on but no I wont forget. The industry pass my by when I am still playing and using sites like this? Clever.
I have never complained/whinged/whined about any other game other then SOE and SWG to anyone. If I saw anyone driving towards a bridge that wasnt completed at 100 miles an hour I would still try and warn them to give you an idea of my intentions?
I cant wait for TOR
Final point the game lasted a whole lot longer yes. That does not qualify the ethics of the situation or what happened to a customer base at that time. I am not going to go on an endless topic about how the game bombed and probably kept going from what now appeared to be license term and a set date which could explain the reason that abortion known as the NGE existed...
To reiterate - Dont buy from SOE - check other games they have 'supported'. History is a great teacher

Finally cant wait to see all you guys from SWG:NGE on the other side after the 15th - welcome

SOE does have a bad reputation, that is true, and its not undeserved, or unearned.. they worked hard for it after all
as for the point about the NGE being around much longer than the Pre-CU version... hillarious.. Pre-CU achieved around 240,000 players, the NGE, reduced that number to around 40,000 almost overnight, and the downhill slide never really stopped either...not exactly an endorsement to be proud of is it.. but speaking as one of the Vets - i was there from SWG's beta 3 phase, up until the NGE - and even resubbed a few times since to see how good or bad things were - and i can assure you, that i, and many thousands of others petitioned SOE over the NGE, even before it was released, after seeing how bad the game was on the test server, SOE even categorically stated that they were prepared to lose players in order to appeal to a 'target demographic' ... they wanted WoW players, only.. WoW players werent interested, and after the NGE came.. neither was at least 80 percent of SWG's own players, if you werent there.. then you probably would have a hard time believing it.. so while there are undoubtedly a number of us who have, and probably will shed a tear for SWG... I certainly won't be for the final demise of the NGE... its way past due. and rightly so.
The game is a joke. The only sad thing about it shutting down is that some of it's deluded players will now move to other mmo's and bore the crap out of people in other games.

WHAHAHAHAHAHA just like the L4D2 boycott. Almost 50%, if not more, of the group had the game the day it got released.
Better yet was the COD: Modern Warfare 2 boycott - that one was probably closer to 90% of those "boycotting" the game, because it had no dedicated servers, all playing it on day 1.
redpet...let me offer you some advice - let it go! Even on the off chance SOE changed their mind, who would go back? How could you trust them? You couldn't. I suggest you move on.
Comments
No one on stage said that at Fan Faire. Nor does eq2wire credit any soe employee with saying those words.
SOE already said it was a mutual agreement and that makes plenty of sense.
In fact Smedley just told G4TV why it was closed down
"Smedley cited business reasons, the way the product had performed, and the fact that Star Wars the Old Republic is on the way soon from EA as contibuting to the decision to end the title."
LINK
Agreed, Vets warned this would happen and guess what... it did. This corpse of a game being around for all these years has now finally bit the last and only hand that would feed it.
As Sandbox says - If only people had responded when the wound was inflicted to that game it all may have been different...
Now... let it burn. Dont buy from SOE ....

Good Lord people, just let the game die with what little dignity it has left.
The game needs to die. There is way too much bad blood from the CU, NGE and all the lies that Smedley gave to the SWG community. Let it die, fade away and let a new Star Wars franchise take over.
I would pay to pull the plug on this game myself. Have zero pity for anyone that continued playing after the shenanigans pulled with NGE.
