There seems to be a lot of people who either are not familiar with LoL HoN nd the like, or don't really know what MOBA's are. They really are a hybrid of RTS and RPG so there is probably a case to be made for both ways. If you are not familiar with them, I'd definitely recommend trying one to see what the appeal is for gamers who play MMOs to help better understand. LoL is free so can try it without making any financial investment. You might be surprised.
I agree. its a natuarl blending of the two genres. If you plotted it on a continuum it would be something like this:
MOBA's are almost the exact intersection between the two genres, and as more and more games come out, we are going to be seeing those lines blur like we have been seeing in the shooter/RPG genre hybrids.
And for anyone still clinging to the idea that this site should only be about 'true' MMOG's: its time for a reality check; change is inevitable, it the only constant in this world of ours.
Actually, the only reason we don't have more coverage for Archeage and Dawntide is because both companies aren't exactly sharing a lot yet. That said Archeage has an interview with Jake Song going up next week, and we are working stuff out for Dawntide.
That said, feel free to avoid MOBA coverage if its not your cup of tea. That doesn't mean our other more MMORPG stuff is.going by the wayside. We are just expanding so to speak.
Expanding? So you are hiring new staff to cover the new genre? No? Then some mmorpg coverage will go by the wayside, unless you are all working longer hours. This is sad.

Actually, we are hiring new staff to cover this for us. So cheer up.

Hire Paragus, he already has contacts within Riot's studios.
Whether or not they belong here is up to the staff to decide. I will say this though, the last few years this genre has been riddled with bombs and botched games. I started playing League of Legends a little over a year ago with my guild and it has outlasted every MMO we have tried playing in the last 5 or 6 years. The game is free to play which makes it highly accessible, competitive, and growing at a stunning rate. Having done 2 interviews with Riot so far, I can say that as a company they are hyper active with communicating with their community. MOBA games as a genre will be one to watch in the next few years, and League of Legends specifically is well on its way to achieving World of Warcraft level status in terms of popularity.
I can see it in a few years... "this new MOBA is just a LoL clone! LoL ruined MOBAs!"
edit: I could care less one way or the other if they cover MOBAs.
It's a proven historical fact that beer saved humankind.
I'm amazed so many people DON'T know what a MOBA is by now. Like he said, League of Legends just set record online viewership records for a gaming tournament and they recently even surpassed WoW as the #1 game on xfire. If you like the Arena and BG aspects of WoW you should really give a MOBA like LoL a try.
I, for one, am glad they are expanding coverage to MOBA games. They are an up and coming genre that may gain enough popularity to garner a dedicated website, but lumping them in with mmos for now works pretty well.
If you add a category for MOBA on the games list, please also add categories for all the non-MMO games already on the list, like the lobby based games.
I think EVERYONE who visits mmorpg.com would welcome the addition of these games and others if you would just categorise them propoerly and allow us to instantly see whether it is a game that is relevant to our tastes or not. If I'm looking for an MMORPG, then I don't want to have to take a wild guess whether the game you're talking about is an MMORPG or some off shoot of the genre that doesn't meet the MASSIVELY requirement.
I don't think there's any harm in mmorpg.com covering all bases of the massive games genres. I actually think all these anacronyms are useless and that we might as well just lump them all together as MMOGs anyway.
The genre that was as it was when mmorpg.com started up has moved on in so many different ways that to concentrate on just a small part would be tantamount to murder of the genre. Back then we had a few big mmorpgs, now we have everything from mmorts to full on sandbox without much game.
I'd like to hear about these other games and I don't like having to trawl a dozen sites to do so. I heard about Neverwinter here, and never would have had I not come here (not for a time anyway). I also heard about Archeage here and thank the mighty lords of mmos for it.
I might not always agree with what the writers here say, but it's the best damn place to hear it if you ask me. Stick it all in one place and amaze me with what this genre can turn itself in to.
It's better than hearing about Rift, Rift, WoW, WoW, WoW, Rift, some other game, Rift....yeah you get my point.
I don't like those games you listed. Maybe BLC but thats nothing special either.
I would however love to see you do some dota coverage. What about DOTA2, its comming soon, although no info is released just yet. Will we see at least DOTA2 here?
Since they, themselves, have become a full blown genre (which does not make them MMORPG's, as the name of the site suggests) the developers of this site should do what they have done for other genre's and make a site seperate from this with nothing but news and information about those games..
OR, they could even include them on RTSGuru.com, being that they resemble those a little more closely than mmorpg's.. (With the exception of ones that do not have the traditional control, like LOCO online)
I guess mobaguru.com would be a pretty small site then. After all there aren't *that* many MOBAs out there.
Anyway, I really think people shouldn't be so god damn anal about this site being named "mmorpg.com" and still covering games that don't exactly are MMORPGs. Then again I wouldn't consider most of the MMORPGs RPGs either ...

Yah.. i feel the same way and find it silly when people get all up in arms over a mmo on the game list.
It's like watching people argue over star trek physics.
By all means review a games rpg elements and tell me why you think it sucks... but going all super nerd and trying to use strict definitions of how a game should be seems too elitist/nerdy to me >_>
I'm glad MMORPG.com decided to do that recent article on League of Legends, as after reading it I decided to look into the game & so far i'm have a blast in it. If the article wasn't made, i'd have never known about the game. So thanks MMORPG.com!
If its not an mmo then it should not be on this site, why not expand your recent new site launches with a moba site and dump all their moba crap in that.
I agree with some one above, there are loads of new mmo's to be listed instead of maffing around with games that should not be here why dont you focus on what should.
I think your size is getting to your head and your trying to cover to much.
very intresting, i havent played a MOBA yet but i took a stab at what it stood for and it turned out i was right. Bill is right in what hes saying even though its not a full fledged MMORPG it still has MMO aspects and deserves attetion, and its gettting that attention many people love these games. I think there an important part of gaming and should be on this website.

Online viewership record? WTF is this, a football game? Who wants to WATCH someone else play video games? LOL
Like others have said you should have defined what a MOBA is in your article. Other than that, I have no problem with you covering these type of games. They are becoming a significant part of the market.
I also had never heard of MOBA's and didn't know what they were. Thanks for the definition, those who looked it up for us.
Ok, well, as you were. I am also not in the crowd who cares if the site branches out or not. I guess at some point though the name of the site will just become misleading to newcomers.
A bit of cross-pollination and how the mmo is stretching all over games eg the PvP set-up in LoL is interesting from the angle of mmorpg writers just as the business model is:
From the pov of sandbox, pvp and multiplayer these create "take note" reflections in the mmorpg world I think very productive to talk about (anywhere)?

I agree. its a natuarl blending of the two genres. If you plotted it on a continuum it would be something like this:
MMORPG <---> CORPG (GW, Hellgate, WoT) <---> MOBA <---> Isometric dungeon crawler <---> RTS

"To be a rock and not to roll..."
moba stands for "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena"
I don't know why they decided to use an term like that and then ignore everybody who asked what it meant.. seems like they are trying to act "smart"
MMORTS sounds more in keeping with convention but good luck with pushing your new acronymn ;p

or just add an extra webpage to the site dedicated to all mmo's so the rabid mmorpg fans dont have a conniption fit

moba is not mmorpg. create and mess moba.com
moba would than mean battlefield series etc. its nonsense imo
Still think this belongs on RTSguru

1. LoL
2. Minecraft
3. TF2

How about Spiral Knights, then? That's not strictly an MMORPG, either, but it's close to it than MOBAs are.
