MMOs out of Asia tend not to be in line with my tastes, in either aesthetics or design. But this sounds promising in a number of respects, and very worrying in a number of others. This trial and jail system things sounds like it will be either ignored or a complete disaster, for example. The building and crating systems sound terriffic, though - I'm looking forward to trying it out when it hits North America.
Open PvP with trials and jail time? You have got to be kidding! Get put in jail? Send stuff to another character and delete. Gold sellers will have rooms full of youngsters farming players. Lock out account? Gold sellers have rooms full of youngsters farming playes with multiple accounts. Criminals getting punished by trials? Most players who grief or pk or hunt down others do so for the fun of it, gaining stuff in a virtual world is a dim second place. Monitoring and trying to control such players will be a nightmare - good luck. Won't touch a game like this myself. You crims will just have to find some other 'cannon fodder' victims.
Good luck to the rest and I actually hope this works out for the real gamers who like some of the mechanics and ideas.
Forgive my skepticism, but I find it difficult for them to convince me as a western audience member that they are trying to design a game that is suppose to include western audiences, yet, isn't designed even in beta 4 to allow western audiences.
Does this mean that right before the game is launched you are going to get some western audiences to come in and give feedback? I guarantee the west and east looks at the game from diffirent standpoints, and finding a great fusion of the two would be an amazing achievement, however, how exactly is this going to be achieved if we, the western audience, so far have little to no input?
Already you can start sort of see in the horizon the seperation of cultures in how they describe their class skills:
Combat (Melee combat skills.) - Okay Makes sense.
Witchcraft (Debuffs and crowd control.) - Yeah okay I can see that definately.
Invincibility (Tank skills for damage-soaking and surviving.) Makes some sense
Will (Magical damage, magic defence, opening portals.) definately makes sense
Necromancy (Necromancy.) Yep
Wild Nature (Ranger and taming skills.) get it
Magic (Magic.)
Assassin (Burst damage skills.) Makes sense
Romance (Buffs, singing and dancing.) lolwut?
Love (Healing and resurrection.) WTF?
Really? So "Romance" is a school that includes buffs, singing and dancing, and if I want to be a healer, I have to follow the school of "Love".
"I think Closed Beta Tests are to figure out what players would like to play and to check if the game is being developed in the right way."
Absolutely right, so why the hell are western audiences not participating this early on, if you claim to want this to be an international success?
I roll my eyes when any MMO says something to the equivelant of "we have two factions to pvp against each other". Really. That is what you need to give players a motivation for pvp? Another cookie cutter "originaility" here? " We are trying to make ArcheAge a game where players can make their own content by themselves instead of just consuming the content already made by the game developer."
"The two alliances are Nuian and Hariharan. The Nuian alliance (led by the Nuian race, a human race in the Western continent), and Hariharan alliance (led by the Hariharan race, a human race in the Eastern continent) are in a hostile state when the game starts."
2?
Really?
The entire world is somehow pitted against one another, one on side A and one on side B, choose your faction. A third or fourth alternative simply cannot be. Much originaility here huh. You claim you want players to create their own content, yet, central core mechanics like factions are just limited to two sides.
Maybe this is just a personal bias against games who just limit themselves to such a cut-and-paste idea that only two warring factions can and should exist. Forgetting the kind of in-game dynamics, in-game politics, and in general player-generated motivation, that can come by introducing a third side.
Again, forgive the skepticism, I've been over hyped for new and fresh MMORPGs now for more than half a decade, with a constant barrage of ever more cookie-cutter formulas, inability to really explore or define original gameplay, and false promises of "deep" and "innovative" features. However, saying all this, ArcheAge seems to be the next MMORPG i may get excited about. But I still remain ever skeptical, and this news development hasn't allievated it much at all.
This is the ONLY MMORPG scheduled to release in the next 5 years that I'm really excited about....but these interviews (especially one given by the president of the company) are largely worthless.....and are crypticly vauge at best. I get there are translation issues when doing a Q&A like this......but c'mon....its sounds like an interview was given to a 13 year old.
Don't get me wrong....much appreciation to MMORPG.com for trying to get more information in our hands. I just think these sort of interviews are better suited for the developers, or other guys in the weeds, than given by upper management (if those lower level employees are allowed to give said interview)
I'm all for ffa pvp but I see myself accidently aoeing others then being judged guilty by them.
You can't *accidentally* AOE someone, unless you don't understand how AOE works.
Time to stop mashing buttons and think about what you're doing.
There is an element of responsibility that comes along with using your skills in proximity to others (in FFA PvP games). Forcing the game to "save you" from your actions based on those around you is like dropping a bomb in the center of a battlefield and expecting only one side to take damage.
"If I'm not enjoying the game from the beginning then why do I need to torture myself to get to "end cap" to see the "real" game? WTF? Why can't the WHOLE GAME BE THE REAL GAME" - TheExplorer
Sad to hear you get mounts at a low level, mounts can really ruin a mmo if you get em to early, you tend to skip alot of content that way, hope they got it balanced right.

Oh so you are so damn perfect that you never make mistakes while playing a game? accident happens, it does not mean that the said player didn't understand how the AOE mechanism works. Also, i always find it amusing when players use real life scenarios only when it suits their argument.
Sounds like they are trying to coax non pvp players into playing open pvp with the promise of control [which is not open pvp]. Oh where have I heard this kind of talk before ... /cough Aion.
It will be cute, amusing, maybe even fun until the organized PK guilds work the system for their own benefit. Which should take about 72 hours max from launch.
The trial system isn't anything like the America legal system; people can't just bring others to court on a whim.
Previous talks spoke the ways people get charged with crimes, in regards to killing, is someone has to bear witness to the act and survive. Basically, when you are killed you drop a blood pool. Someone else can pick this up and turn it in before it disappears. You cannot pick up your own pool either. Then the item can be turned in as proof for the crime. Obiviously, the more proof the harsher the punishement.
If you continue to commit crimes you are eventually flagged a pirate and not a part of the two original factions.
This is all subject to change, but figured I would throw it out there seeing what things have been made up and listed like fact.
I have browsed their ,um, cough, website and saw nothing said about this. Where did you get this info? I would like to know more about ArcheAge because this and/or The Secret World are my 2 bets as far as moving on to something better than LOTRO.
Also, Romance and Love as abilities for a healer? I hope its a language translation error....
Between all the mistranslations, there is a Yes and No to this game.
Yes it tries to have open choices.
No, you cannot do whatever you like.
Either release wtf this game is about or should we all just get Korean visas to be in the loop.
I was interested in this game until I seen some ingame beta footage over at AA Portal (http://aaportal.net/en/).
Any game after being in development for 5 years should have the basics down pat already. Seems like they are still figuring out themselves what this game is about. So give it another 6 years and we might be able to beta test it and then find out that it's just all plain marketing hype...
Moving on! Was worth a glimmer of hope, but alas nothing more!
This game is gonna be ridiculously good. Im not even gonna bother countering the haters. Could care less if they play. There will be more than enough people playing this to keep it going indefinitely.
I'm glad this one's not in the US yet, it's too unrefined, too unfocused as people have said. It's going to take a lot more polish than it seems to have now to impress us westerners, and it'd be a shame to ruin its potential by jumping the gun. They should basically wait to give us a nearly finished product before we get to try it.

Are we looking at the same videos? You seriously think they need another 6 years till they are done? Care to explain what you were seeing in the video that disapointed.....or what it is that they are lacking that will take another 6 years?
The game is meant to be a Sandbox / Themepark hybrid. The problem with pure sandbox games is that they don't offer enough direction to new players that aren't familiar with the game (or the genere) and they are viewed to be playgrounds for griefers due to the unrestricted game play. ArcheAge trys to fix this by offering "starter" zones and a very "themepark like" begginning experience where you have more protections against other players & guidence in what to do with newb quests n' what not.
The problem with themepark games is that they don't let you go off the rails and can generally only make an existance in the game as an adventurer....constantly in a repetitive treadmill for gear gained by questing / raiding. ArcheAge trys to fix this by offering up a deep non-combat experiences (craftable houses / ships / Best in Slot Armor / Best in Slot Weapons / farming / gathering / fishing) and other sandbox systems like player driven economy, castle siege system, clan warring system, etc.
Also, please keep in mind this is the first AAA quality sandbox game out of an indie developer.....thats why it took 6 years. It took Adventurine nearly 9 years to finally release Darkfall Online and it couldn't hold a candle to Arche Age if compared at beta states.
The game certianly has its challenges (like finding a Western publisher), but its not exactly the sort of game you make it out to be.
the amount of terrible MMOs that came out of asian region is just staggering; they don't just test for koreans only, the game itself is designed for asian players period.
look at Aion, they sure westernize that game; it was the same as the chinese version and the korean version. The only difference was the language! They are no such thing as westernizing an asian mmo. they're bad, no matter how much effort they put into the graphics.
I've played so many MMOs from asia, none of them kept my attention because they're bad.
The difference is ArchAge isn't a standard korean game. Its not a themepark. Thats enough reason right there.
This game is gonna be ridiculously good. Im not even gonna bother countering the haters. Could care less if they play. There will be more than enough people playing this to keep it going indefinitely.
I would love to be wrong, you know that right? As I am sure the other "haters" would as well.
Asian game-- red flag
Korean game-- Double red flag
Lineage 2 Karma type system -- Dick Vitale "TRIFECTAH RED FLAG BABY!"
is this game going to be another Aion..total pvp and no pve?..what i mean is are there going to be pve servers?
How?
It has nothing to do with it, except some graphic cues
Tera is going to be the next Aion
Archeage has very little in common with Aion, Tera or even Lineage 2 (even though they share the same producer)
Archeage has 3 main playstyle
A Theme Park PVE, Hardcore PvP, and Sandbox economy and community features.
This game is not Aion
It's basically the Hybrid MMO we have been waiting years for, something for everyone, you have the on-rails quests (themepark), creating your own stories or content and community driven features (housing, taverns, seiges, naval battles- sandbox) with hopefully a lot more non-combat activities down the road , like gambling, or a prostitue :P , with a game like this could be my next SWG for me, the trial system for PKing sounds interesting, hopefully as well hacks and exploiters are dealt with swiftly, really havent been keeping up with this game all the time, but is it a full loot PVP system, or will PVP be confined to certain areas like in EVE or SWG had?
This game is gonna be ridiculously good. Im not even gonna bother countering the haters. Could care less if they play. There will be more than enough people playing this to keep it going indefinitely.

Wow if I didn't know any better I'd think I was in a skinhead forum.
Koreans Westernizing... This should be entertaining.
Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. It's a huge "we don't know what the fuck we're doing" red flag. You can't say a game is for a world wide market, and then feature lock based only on input from people in one (and in this case not terribly large) market.

Yeah Foomerang. And you're the one sounding racist. Is it racist now to recognize that different gaming regions develop to largely different design rules? Cause if it isn't -- you have to wonder why you made that comment, huh?
I don't think you folks understand why only Koreans are allowed to play the game:
1. Legally, only Koreans can play Korean games on Korean servers with Korean citizens, since only Korean citizens legally have Korean national ID numbers. Cybercrime law in Korea dictates you must enter your Korean national ID number before registering to play Korean online game, so that the government can more easily track down online criminals. No ID, no game. Stealing an ID and registering is also illegal, but that hasn't stopped many people from trying anyhow.
2. The game is in Korean, not English, so most of you can't read it anyhow and XLGAMES isn't going to waste time translating it for you.
Comments
either that or sexed up children - it's just wrong.
I'm usually negative on this forum. Why? Because every game ad, interview, or concept is virtually the same.
HOWEVER
This game offers some real innovation. This game is unique. I'm really looking forward to it... much more than swtor etc.
