Out of curiosity which type of server were you playing on, PvP or PvE? I feel the way you do about every PvE server out there but just the opposite for the PvP ones.

Well, you know, it's still that game that brings nothing new to the table but action oriented combat (which Single player RPGs do better) and a pseudo-adultish atmosphere (which single player RPGs do better); So you're stuck with a game that tries to compete with 'dark fantasy atmosphere' but doesn't dare to go where it hurts (you can even slay innocents in BIowares water-washed titles, in AoC, you can't), action-adventury combat but fails at everything else, tactical gameplay, versatile PvE, easily accessible and fun PvP, heck, even minigames or quicktime events or ANYTHING except "charge, 1, 2, 2, 3, d, e, 1, 1, 2, next"...

I really enjoyed levels 1-60ish in AoC, although frowning upon the unimaginative, "littered" quests, the virtually non-existent crafting during leveling, the non-existent social content whatsoever...

It was fun stabbing people in the face in beautiful environments, zerging down demons due to lack of clearly specified roles and getting the occasional epic moment when looking into the distance. But well, at the end of the day (or three weeks it was) you gotta admit the game is lacking depth in so many fields; at least as a grown up and a mmo-vet you can't help but move on.

So I have to kind of agree

The open PvP in this game resulted in me, getting raped every 2 minutes by someone largely more powerful than me. I couldn't help it, couldn't evade, couldn't swap zones (as there weren't any). And on top of that I got taunted for being "a total noob"... Which is only fact, since i _was_ a total noob, but a noob deadlocked between jerking gankers not able to get anywhere since I couldn't level. And level it was that made the most of my noobishness.

So I, the level 23ish hero I was, heroically battled my 5 second fights against droves of people levels 40+. You know, I'm not usually a carebear-whiner (been playing eve for years now), but this just left me shrugging and rerolling on a PvE realm, since it made zero sense and was about as much fun. For my PvE experience view above post =P

I liked it for a while, can anyone outline how limiting the f2p is? Briefly

If you want to taste the end game content- you have to pay.

F2P basically just allows you to hit the lvl cap.

    I'm a dude. I do stuff.

I am enjoying this game and I have tried several other MMOs, so when I see people criticizing it too much about it I have to repeat my question: what MMOs are you guys playing? This is a serious question as you can be playing better games that I don't know about, so it would be nice to know.

    Meridion?

    Thanks.

Limited storage, 2G in your posession cap.

Character advancement post 80 severely limited on both the PvE gear and skill sides (Alternate Advancement points which make a big difference), PvP gear can be advanced unlimited at 80 whether F2P or a subscriber.

A bunch of areas in Khitai which you cant access at 80 (they're a pure grind anyway).

There is no point in placing the smaller class choice in the limited thought train as the ones available to F2P are some of the best there are.

    __________

Mostly the limitations are at end game. From 1 to 80 you have almost everything that a subscriber has to enjoy. (Edit - I forgot that there are a couple of lowbie dungeons which you can't visit, but to be honest the gear in them aren't that great other than they look a lot better than world blues).

im loveing this game..  just something about it...  only thing that annoys me is i have to disable SLI for it to run great.  Other then that, theres tons of players on there now.  The quests and story is better then most mmo's ive played latey and i was paying for them.

ya I guess the game is alot like DCOL a fun single player experience, but you can have alot more fun playing Dragon Age or The Witcher part 1 or 2 or Mass Effect part 1or 2 etc I to loved tortage and made it about lvl 27 but I felt like I was playing a different game then the Tortage experience, becase of that it led me to belileve the game was and is unfinished, instead of making a X pac they should have made the rest of the world more like Tortage.    It just blows my mind how this company could make a great playing experience like Tortage and then make the rest of the game a mess- did they just give up?

They ran out of time and funding and figured, like any clever developer, that the first impression means a lot more than good endgame, especially during the first months.

So they shove it out the door and promise they will deliver the missing content later. The game hits, gets mediocre feedback from the community, some people play it, many leave after they've run across the later, not so finished, stages of the game. Meanwhile, developers are drawn from the project because the "game is out the door now", revenue is okish, so the suits figure that it'd be best to run it how it is and allow some small crew to work on improvements, chronically underfunded and short of manpower ((only smashhits or games that are not only retaining but winning customers during their first 24 months actually get staff added, like EVE during 2005-2009)). As they're determined to keep the game and their job they promise heaven on earth and often work hard to get out the door what is possible, but well, it's just not enough with the minimal backup they get... (which is also the fault of the consumers, who expect a team to implement whole fully playable factions to be delivered after launch just because the devs say so, like in STO or WAR, although everyone with a pea-sized brain will grasp that it is practically impossible to do for a maintenance crew, unless you're blizzard or some other industry giant)...

Additionally, IF they release new aspects/races/lands, they decide to announce new content in form of an expansion then, because that is a huge lure for players to get back on the train or draw new players (just look at WAR, the game was broken and drowning and mythic announced 'land of the dead', and not the (still now) missing capitals, or the missing classes)

Drowning parts of the game are kept in there to rot, kept half-way over water with additions and small fixes (like huge money drains or second, third economies [tokens, medals, badged to turn in, you name it])

once the new content hits the shelves players realize it introduces lots and lots of grind, for arguably valuable items/powers/upgrades, but very hard to reach. Because the developers know that they NEED people to work on something and they know they cannot provide content with the small team they have... fixing minor bugs or gameplay issues that came up after launch are long on ice and not even mentioned anymore in podcasts, announcements, etc...

What you get after 1 or 2 expansions, even if the expansions are kinda worthwhile, is usually strong starter experiences, often with revamped new player experiences, extremely lacking mid-game, deserted vanilla endgame content and a halfway decent but hard to get into expansion content.

Some examples are LotRO, EQ2 or Vanguard... with Age of Conan right there with broken crafting from day one but three tiers of endgame raids.

There are 4 tiers of end game raids and you need to get yourself into the pvp aspect. Games like this were designed for people to work together, not stand around lamenting how the PvE aspect is too easy yet too afraid to dip a toe in PvP where it is ever changing. Heaven forbid your foe may do something unexpected.

The game has many faults but some of the tripe that's being said in this thread is /chuck worthy.

Well, actually, not... as simple as that.

"games like this" are actually designed for self sustained play in almost all situations. The people ganking me on the PvP server were mostly alone, occasionally assisted or resisted by some random guy. Even in PvE this game is a lot less team-dependend than most other games I know. In fact you could solo pretty much all non-dungeon content up to level 6X, and the dungeons were very forgiving concerning the group lineup, hybrid zerg FTW.

Early EQ/EQ2 was team dependent, early WoW was team dependent.

The problem is the PvP may be fun and rewarding at max level or in the sieges (which still seem to crash, at least this is what I hear), the open PvP with no relevant level/flagging/zone restriction is a gankers eldorado. The lacking thought of the developers allow gankers to kill everyone, no matter where, no matter how and when. You can die at a spawnspot right outside town from a single lightning bolt that does 15 times your overall health, and the guy can just keep standing there bouncing you back to spawn...

And as much as you'd probably like me to be a carebear-whiny-noob, I've played lots and lots of team-oriented PvP centric games, from WAR to years of EVE online. And AoC is one of the worst

    M

Meridion in every single MMO I played on PVP servers I was ganked the same way you describe it. Hated it, but thats a general problem, not AoC exclusive.

I ask once more to all the critics, please post the titles (MMOs) you are playing.

    You got a point.

Other experiences are a few old Diku Muds, then SWG, EQ, VG, Ryzom, WoW, Lotro, CO, Allods, Rift, Perpetuum, if we are talking strictly MMOs. I just do not want the discussion to get derailed talking about other MMOs when we are talking about AOC, which is why I suspect you were asking about other games.

Having answered that, I ll make clear I am not willing to talk about those other games.

When I am saying AOC is boring I am not talking in relative terms but in absolute terms. It's boring becouse the world is tiny, yet infested with mobs to make up for it, movement is slow, combat is superslow, quests are linear, crafting useless, economy dead. It's boring per se, not compared to anything. It's intrinsecally boring, not related to anything.

  • CandombleCandomble Member UncommonPosts: 164

Got it Gordiflu and I am not going to talk about other games.

AoC has its own limitations, like other games have, and in the end what matters is what the player values the most. I have more fun with AoC than what I had with the majority of the titles you mentioned, but all of this is very personnal.

The only problem I had with the game is the lack of population. I have returned a couple of times, if it was thriving with players I would probably return again. It looks feels and sounds great, how a MMO should. But maybe too far ahead of time spec wise - giving it a limited audience.

Thats why they give you the ability to adjust the settings so you can fine tune it to run smoothly, and it is not just me that has problems but many others and thats probably the biggest reason why you found a lack of population. For a while I had the classic crashing while zoning problem that is fixed now. I can run Aion 2.5 fully maxed out with no problems other than when I enter a crowded city but thats just a bit of lag for 30 secs and then its good to go. Its has got better with AOC but its far from perfect.

Okay, just because you praised the game in the beginning doesn't mean you were right. And Aion is not a graphically demanding game, I don't care how good people think it's graphics are. I can play Aion full graphics on my laptop... that really doesn't say much. Age of Conan's engine is clunky and a memory hog, I will give you that, but it's that way because the games graphics were highly advanced for their time, this being the first MMO to really boast robust textures and high grass pollination counts. Before that we had the limited flat textures of LoTRo, Warhammer, etc. Aion does not have very good textures besides on the character models. I'm just going to say AoC plays perfectly well on my computer with max graphics DX10, and when it runs it is a great MMO in my opinion.

I really like Deathwish so far.  So much more interesting than wandering around half-asleep doing quests and collecting rewards.  A blue item I wanted to sell dropped for me earlier, and it took me a half hour to reach town, creeping along and avoiding players and those pesky mobs who always pop me out of stealth.  I know that nothing belongs to me if it isn't in my bank or bound to me, and that adds to the fun.

I might be a little too polite for this server, though.  I leave people who haven't been attacking me alone, so I'm the one who gets jumped.  My KDR is awful.  But I know it would be better if I'd spent my time attacking people lower level than me, at half health, with three mobs on them.  So I'll let it stay awful.  I also haven't run into zergers determined to completely lock an area down yet.  If I do, I'll roll and play a pve character until they go away.

Its interesting that people haven't liked it upon return. I will admit at the time of launch I hated it because I had a beast computer and the client gave me so many technical problems the biggest of which was having sound on caused massive graphical lag.

Now I returned and it runs flawlessly. The graphics are breath taking on the highest settings and the combat is kind of refreshing. I'n not going to lie the learning curve of playing a melee charecter in this game is unbelievably steep. There is a lot of skill involved to execute combos correctly, stay in range, dodge attacks, etc. So I think this turns people off because the game itself is pretty difficult. Especially in PvP where a lot of the population has had time to master such skills necessary to play this game.

I like the fact that its harder though. I always considered myself good at mmo's and its cool to have to learn some new tips and tricks to be good. The lack of voice acting past tortage is dissapointing and I wish funcom would add it in even though it would likely be difficult.

I am having a lot more fun now and its currently my game of choice so we shall see how it goes.

I really wasn't trying to be right I was just agreeing with the OP for the most part and expressing my experience which have been good and bad. My experiences were dismissed as uniformed claptrap when they were my experiences which is all I can express really. The problem lies in the fact that if you have some bad experiences with a game and you express them many a poster will feel the need to just dismiss you out of hand without any understanding that is what you've experienced and thus label you a hater, being critical is not hating its just being critical, its as simple as that.

I have sorted most of the problems I've had on return and the game runs much better for me but not perfectly, I'm enjoying being back in Hyborea as the atmosphere is up there with the best MMO's and now with the RotGS xpac there are things to do at lvl80 for a non raiding, non PvP player like me, which is something to look forward to. Its a shame about crafting but I've chatted in game and a few people feel that its still worth persuing for weapons, food and potions so I might give it a go. AOC is a game that has improved immensely from release in regards to content and I hope the f2p model works out for Funcom as the game will only get better I'm sure if the funding is there. It just needs to fill out the mid game, lvl's 40-80 to make alts a pleasure and not a chore and maybe revamp the crafting system to get the economy going and give people some fluff non comabt things to do, IMO of course.

First, I have been really enjoying pvping since I returned to AoC. Second, the crafting in AoC is just painfully bad. I wish you luck with crafting, but I have enjoyed the game a lot more since I decided just to avoid crafting in AoC.
