Right, because npc opponents are easy and predictable.

You might not build an empire yourself in Eve, but you might build it with 1000 other people though.

Exactly. Or make a mini empire for yourself with a lot of specialized alts.

NPC's being stupid doesn't have much to do with that difference though; its mainly because of X3 being a single player game and able to allow for vast personal empire building with hundreds of stations and factories. Imagine having the same ease of building of X3 in EVE ... I can already hear servers moan and graphics cards burst into fire, not to mention the lag.

Since your a huge fan of X3, I can suggest Evochron: Mercenaries. In many ways it surpasses X3 in my opinion, and there are multiplayer servers, one of which is 24/7.

ooh not came across that one before, i may just give that a spin for some single play freelancer style fun.  From what I read there are fundemental issues with MP, mainly that the setup of the game means that clans have carved up all the resources and that the game is therefore a lot more static than sp, in that in sp you can build and do what you like, in mp, there is not much space to do this - seem correct?

If you ask for advice for PVE, you invariable get 'be prepared to lose ships' and don't travel with anything valuable that you are not prepared to lose.  Reading between the lines you can join a 'carebear' guild (yes that's what they call pve'rs)  but there is a glass ceiling which you van only breach by going pvp.

PVP wise it is superb, and the complexity of the game is wonderful.

That was my impression from my short time in EVE as well.  I'm also a big X-Universe fan and the biggest problem I had when playing EVE is that your enemies don't need any reason to f*** with you.  They'll do it just because they can.  They're kind of like pirates but without a rationale.  If you're into PvP though, you'll probably adore the game because it does that part very well.  Across the board it's really a pretty high quality game.  The gankfest wasn't for me though.

Personally, I'm holding out for X Rebirth before indulging my galactic trade empire fetish again.

I want to get into the mining/trading/building aspects of EVE since this was the biggest part of what I have been doing in X3 and why its so amazing.  Right now in X3 I own one of the biggest mining corporations with hundereds of silicon and ore mines in many sectors.  This was starting as a lowly trading merchant and making enough money to buy my first mining complex. Combat was fun every now and then, but was not the main point for me so EVE's click and shoot combat doesn't bother me at all.

Now I want a deeper and even more engaging experience of empire building, working the markets, logistics calculations, and all that jazz.  I've always been nervous of trying EVE because of the danger invloved and RL money commitments, but with amazing corporation mechanics I feel like that shouldn't be an issue detering me from playing.

So those that have played EVE or are playing, I ask you this: Do you think EVE would be a great step up for me?  Is EVE still healthy?  And are there any corporations you know of willing to hire a newbie trader/miner such as myself after I graduate EVE University :)?

It's not at all like playing a single player game like the X series, in that you are constantly in some degree of danger.  You can be relatively safe in certain areas of the game, but in most of the game space, you are not going to be able to just enjoy building up your stuff in 100% guaranteed peace and quiet - EVER.

However, if you feel you can cope with this - i.e. learn the tools CCP have given carebears to try and avoid trouble - then you will find your carebearing immensely spiced-up by the ever-present danger.  The game universe feels alive in a way that a single player game just cannot match.

It's all made much easier if you join a good player corp, but take some time to learn the game before you join a corp - good ones are hard to find, and it takes a bit of networking and hanging around before you find one.
