Next time you're playing your typical MMORPG ask yourself this question.

-There are NPC's milling about in a particular area, they never leave the area.  It makes no logical sense!  Why is it here?!

-There is a Tower over there, with NPC's in it milling about you're suppose to kill for quest, they never leave the area.  It makes no logical sense!  Why is it here?!

-There is a bridge going from this bump of land to another bump of land.  It makes no logical sense!  Why is it here?!

-There is a quest giver over yonder.  It makes no logical sense!  Why is it here?!

I'm afraid MMORPG's have never left the Donkey Kong Era.

Making the world first then quests later is the best way to go imo. But like others have said, most gamers are so lazy they don't care if it makes sense, they just want it to be easy. Notice how WoW has gotten easier and easier and now they have PUG friendly raids? PUG FRIENDLY RAIDS. WTF? When were raid supposed to be PUG friendly? Lol. I hope some AAA game comes out that can change this new MMORPG game world design.

It makes gameplay sense, which for gamers is all the sense in the world.

I mean there's clearly value to a game being logically consistent, but the value is weighted much lower than whether something makes a game play better.

It's not real life it's a game, they are not there to make sense but so we have something to do....  Should those NPC's at the mill be killed by another player not respawn???, that would mean that I would have nothing to do when I come through that zone later afer they were killed.

And we have one of many base differences between Sandbox MMO's and Themepark MMO's.  To each his own, but I agree OP, it makes no sense.  I have finally taken the next step in my MMO gaming life and have stepped away from the themeparks (WoW, EQ, WAR, AoC, RIFT) and am now playing Perpetuum and EVE.

I see what the sandbox lovers have been trying to say now.  It took a little courage and faith, but playing these MMO's has really made games fun again.  I have consoles and single player games for the "Themeparks".

Sandboxes make just as much or as little sense as themeparks.   I can name dozens of things that make no logical sense in EVE but are there purely for gameplay purposes.  Ton of stuff in original SWG did not really make sense if viewed from outside teh game.

It makes no logical sense to see faults in the games you do not like and completely ignore it in the games you like.
