As previously mentioned, 2 gold is a lot and goes a lot further in AoC than in other MMO's as the economy is a lot different and if you check out the AH, you can see just how much you can get for your 2 gold.

I have a lvl47 Sin and have never had 2g at the moment I have 23s and I've never really needed any more I could do with upgrading my gear but I'm doing fine with low 40's gear so don't really see the need. At the moment to me 2g is plenty but that might change at lvl50+.

Having played this game for about a month solid now, 2g is a lot for leveling characters. Never will you need more then that to pick up and potions or gear upgrades you might need. Only once you hit the end game ball park (60-80) will you want to invest in removing the cap. Honestly though, the game has very fair f2p restrictions. It might seem crippling for those returning with capped characters or those not wanting to pay a dime, but the game has a great leveling experience for free, and paying to play the endgame content is a fair investment.

You guys are seriously delusional if you think 2G is a lot. Granted you may not have made 2G in your 40s but you'll make it before you can blink as you get higher, by the time my toons hit 80 they usually have around 40G on them. Also, all it will get you on the auction house are world blues which are worthess or a fraction of the mats needed to craft a decent culture piece.

I'm subbed for 6 months and yet still think it's too little for the F2P people, half of whom are paying more than a sub costs through the shop. They might as well say goodbye to crafting, it'll cost them 8 gold just to to get the mats for one piece.. oh wait, they can only hold 2.

All these misunderstandings arise because "An alternative method of payment geared towards retards or free loaders feeding off of retards 2P" just isn't as catchy.

Damn them marketeers and their catchy slogans!

I'm 25 so far and 2g seems impossible to reach, but I'm sure later on it won't take more than 10 minutes to make tha amount. Keep in mind though FTP is out for only 5 days, and I'm certain the plan will be revised in the near future, as with all other FTP's. It's always safer to put high restrictions first, to loose them up later, than give away with open arms and then take it back. There might be ways to unlock that limit in the future other than subbing. As an alternative I hope stacking ore will be viable, as someone mentioned.

Maybe it's best to illustrate the ingame gold value with an example:

in AoC, it costs 1 gold to learn the riding skill and buy a mount, iirc it has cost 1-1.5 gold in total for a mount since its launch.

What does it cost in WoW to obtain a mount and the necessary riding skill? 20 gold? 40? And how much was it at WoW's launch?

Gold and silver in AoC have a lot more value than gold and silver in MMO's like WoW.

I played it for 9 months and are well aware what 2 gold is worth (or was 2 years ago at least). It isn't much even though it might sound like a loot to any low level player.

It is still far too little, particularly since people who actually own the game gets no bonus at all, even though we paid for both the box and the expansion (I bought it as well and played for 2 weeks after it came out).

10 gold is really minimum a higher level character needs.

2g will get you are fair way in the game.

It will buy you all the PvP 1-4 gear (not the PvP5 helm which is more than 2g, not sure about the weapons either).

You will also be able to buy a basic level 40 mount with it but not the epic mount... not sure if vetern points still work for better mounts, I assume they do.

If you spend some time to farm mats you can probably get crafted gear made and tip the crafter a gold or two.

It will allow you to respec your class, even at its most expensive (caps at 1g?).

There are no repair costs, no travel costs, etc so you don't need gold to explore the world.  The only thing you need it for is to buy stuff on the AH and save for gold sink purchases like epic mounts.

The only thing I disagree with is that I think they should have made the entire original game free-to-play... but I guess you still get access to some dungeons and other stuff to enjoy.

To be fair, no game that starts out F2P is truly F2P.  None of them.  They all have the point of $$$ now or consider yourself a LOSER because those P2W players are now rolling you like yesterday's fish wrap.

I think there is a new cadre of players who try to pick these f2p titles and get as much as they can out of them and not pay a single dime.  Games like these are not cooperating.

The sad truth of the matter is that these "F2P" games get more cash per subscriber than subscription games.  That isn't saying that  everyone that plays F2P games pay, but those that do will spend a TON more cash than if it was a subscription only based game.  Bottom line, if there is a way to P2W, people will.

11 million x 13 euro = 143 million € income per month (minus the fix costs you need to run a game)

beat that with an ingame shop, gonna be hard :)

Interestingly enough, I found myself no longer playing AoC as a freemium member not because of any gold cap (which I never would have hit anyway), but because apart from the combat style and the fatalities.. there's not a lot of 'new' to be had here.  That being said, I really enjoyed the HoX's 'laughing female' fatality.  (the one where she sticks her sword in the chest, then releases it with both hands just to laugh in the soon to be dead mob's face, before yanking the sword out as the mob falls over dead.  The decapatation fatality was also excellent, and happened far more frequently, but I really preferred the laughing impale a ton more.)

The storyline is pretty satisfying, allowing you to kill some of the major quest givers who gave you some of the stupidest and shittiest quests (although not all of them).  The first time I met the female Red Hand guard, I wanted to kill her right there and damn the consequences, but the game wouldn't let me.. because they were setting me up to kill her later, with a bunch of other named NPCs who I hated.

The combat style though, is definitely worth the week or so you might spend trialing the game.   The directional combat feels like something new and interesting, and almost makes you want to go down for the full price of admission just because of those two things, but what really kills this game, which is on the verge of 'good', is that so much of the quests are just.. ugh.. so grindy.  Kill 30 of this.. kill 30 of that.. If I didn't like the combat system so much, it'd be completely unbearable.  And follow up quests will frequently send you to the same exact location or less than a few feet away.. with an intervening run back through the zone.  (3 if your path of Asura isn't up at some point during this).  AoC really just gets questing plain wrong.. as there's another quest once you get out of Tortage that has you running across a huge zone with higher level monsters (more than twice your level) just to deliver a message to an NPC for no follow up quest.  In fact, the sheer absurdity of this leaks into the quest dialogue in some cases, where you're presented with dialogue options that are literally riffs or variations on 'What?  That's ridiculous, why are you having me do this.. especially after what you -just- did to me.. oh whatever just tell me where to go.'  It's almost as if the quest designer is mocking you.

Additionally, endgame is much of the same without a heckuva lot different or even 'up to date'.  It feels like WoW did pre-BC.  It feels obsolete and dissappointing considering the innovative and visceral nature of combat and the fatalities. Crafting is also 2004 and nothing at all to write home about without also using the word 'obsolete'.

So if you're asking if this game is worth the trial, my answer is yes.  However, if you're asking if this game is worth you spending time outside of the month or so you might play this game, the answer is no.

Hmm. Did you really try all the Khitai dungeons?? They definitely didn't feel obsolete or the same as in other MMO's to me image

The Khitai dungeons are probably the only bright spot in pve.. and it's only a lackluster sheen at that.  Bonus though, the community is very nice.  You can tell they are a lot more mature and prone to helping people which gives me a lot of hope for TSW.. if you have people like this who are patient through newb questions and the somewhat overtly repetitive nature of the quests, then you've got a soild community engine to make games for.

All in all, I come away from AoC with a mild feeling of disappointment, but not really feeling as if I've wasted my time or anything like that. I find myself wishing... wishing that this game had taken a somewhat different trajectory than what it eventually ended up taking.  Maybe another couple of months in development and it could have drawn the sustained attention that would have justified sinking more resources into it that what it ultimately got.

I don't really care that stuff after Tortage was not voice acted.  What kept frustrating me again and again was opening my quest dialogue to see that I was to 'collect 10 of this' or 'kill 30 of that'.  There was no innovation from Classic WoW whatsoever.  The most excited I got was right after you liberate the phoenix medallion and the witch is like 'run' because Strom (who appears as a boss mob at the time) is chasing after you but even that quest didn't have any real sense of danger or innovation.

It's true there is nothing innovative about AoC's basic quest driven gameplay. If you are looking for a sandbox title this ain't it.

But dang I just love logging on and wreaking havok with my Barbarian! Everything AoC does offer is offered with an eye towards quality;  music, motion quality of all avatars and mobs, beautiful zones to explore. The game carries me away whenever I play it. I may be a simpleton and easy to please, but the gameplay keeps me entertained. The destiny quest chain is a blast and has pretty good rewards.

I will admit the game was starting to become a little mundane after playing for a year. Then all this new content stsrted rolling out, and FtP launched, and the appearence tabs went live, ( this is a huge improvement imo) and the population exploded and wow! I am back to digging the heck out of this game!
