Why is the guy in one those videos that is linked upset about a wipe after open beta? This is standard MMO practice to wipe all characters after a open beta in preparation for launch.

Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

    Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:

    GW2 (+LoL and BF3)

The reviewer is an idiot. He's bitching because they deleted his character in open BETA? Are you serious? It's a damned Beta! Meant to, you know, TEST the game! God forbid they want everyone to start over on equal footing after the TEST PERIOD is over.

Just because SOME companies treat OB as a near-release, doesn't mean all of them do. Some actually use it as it is meant to be used.

What game wipes after Open beta? Did Rift? No, Did Allods? No. Did RoM? No. Top MMORPGs dont wipe after open beta because Open Beta is for pre launch players to come in and get a head start, god forbid do developers actually do anything in Open Betas.. the only Open Beta that I saw improvements in was Rift.

Open beta and pre-launch are two different things. I've never been in an open beta where you get to keep your character, not saying that some don't but I've never experienced it. Pre-launch players are usually allowed to keep their characters but pre-lauch also implies you've paid for something. Open beta means you've downloaded a free .exe file and installed the game.

In Neocron Reakktor didn't allow anyone from beta to keep their characters either, it would have entirely unbalanced the game, the economy and pretty much have ruined things because a good number of people were already basically capped. Losing your beta chracter is a rediculous thing to whine about, between beta rollbacks and anything else that can go wrong it's not exactly a loss. It's still called beta for a reason.

Im just surprised because I would expect something like this from a P2P game, as for a F2P game ive never had a game wipe after Open Beta and ive played many. The reason for the whining was theres nothing different between the two clients, if anything they should have wiped after Closed Beta and used Open Beta for ballencing/server matenence like Rift did and allow players to keep there Open Beta/Pre Release characters. And like I read in a previous forum, the reason it wouldnt break the game is because most games that do this create other servers that arnt the "Beta" server to allow players to switch if they feel imballence or a broken economy.

You're thinking prelaunch, not open beta. Always expect wipes after any and all betas.

No I had my character from all the open betas in pre launch for Rift or 'head start" as they call it. Allods wiped after Closed beta, RoM did the same. No games ive played have wiped in Open Beta, normally they will call a pre launch after Open Beta and if you buy there game you get to keep your char... thats how Rift worked. Most betas ive been in wiped after closed beta and basically did nothing in Open Beta but server test. Im not talking pre launch here.

But yes, now that I have experienced an Open Beta wipe I am going to be more cautious.

Rift, Asheron's Call, Asheron's Call 2, Everquest, Everquest 2, Star Wars Galaxies, Dark Ages of Camelot, Anarchy Online, Age of Conan, EvE, Champions Online, City of Heroes, DC Universe Online, Global Agenda, Darkfall, Mortal Online, Dungeons & Dragons Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Fallen Earth, Final Fantasy XI, Final Fantasy XIV, Gods and Heroes, LEGO Universe, Chronicles of Spellborn, Vanguard, Ryzom, Star Trek Online, World of Warcraft, Warhammer. All wiped characters after the close of beta and before retail release.

Games made in the Eastern Hemisphere and are free to play don't erase avatars at the end of their 'beta' periods. The main reason they don't is because most of their games are 'free to play' and they start charging for cash shop items during the periond they label as 'beta. Their 'beta' players would be in an uproar and might abandon the game if all of their cash shop items were to be deleted.

Most game made in the Western hemisphere are pay to play and erase all avatars at the end of their beta periods. If it was made in the 'west' then they probably wiped all avatars at the end of beta.

Both Runes of Magic and Allods, I believe, were made in Russia.

All open beta avatars in Rift were wiped. I pre-purchased Rift. I had to create new avatars. Why did that occur? Among other reasons beside ensuring no bugged avatars made it into the retail release is one very important reason. All shards/servers were given new names upon early launch.

I must have got Rifts open beta and pre launch mixed up, but I expect a game thats F2P to not wipe after Open Beta because like you said most Eastern Hemisphere games dont wipe. Gamigo being a German company and being in the east I wouldnt expect them to wipe, but they did and at the time that video was my initial reaction, Ill admit I should have not vented my anger toward the review, but I did in the end fairly review Black Prophecy.

In my opinion Black Prophesy does suck.  When the 'tutorial' and the story end at the same time then the game ends.

I agree, I played it up till around lvl 20 and there was no story past the tutorial. That was one of my cons with the game is lack of story.

At the end of the European beta, the characters were not deleted. They had all their stats and equipment reset to newbie, but I still have my toon.

Which is actually a good way to handle things. Beta players can keep their in-game identity but in terms of power, they have to start at zero like everyone else.

Yo Geo - Rift most certainly did wipe after open beta, as did most other significant games of the genre. Do not confuse open beta with "head start". The only game I am aware of that is not going to wipe after open beta is currently Hellgate Global - and that is solely because they have opened their cash shop. Open beta is the last phase of testing before a game goes live in a "finished state". Black Prophecy, while not a significant game in the genre, is no different in their decision to wipe OB characters. Be careful, making posts with false info (for instance Rift keeping OB chars) lessens your credibility in reviews that you post.

Like I said in a post up above this was my initial reaction to the wipe. I normally dont expect F2P games to do this because like I said ive tested other games that are F2P and most basically use Open Beta to see if people bitch about something before they go into true "launch", but if nothing changes from the Open Beta to launch there should be no wipe considering everyones allowed to come in and play. Now im not saying its a bad idea, but for this game they should have just wiped the players stats and "power" as the guy said up above. Im not entirely mad that they wiped my levels, but I am mad they got rid of the entire char. I am going to be making a apology for the staff, for I was mistaken on some accounts, but right on others. That or just delete the video because I made the video when my day was bad already so I vented rage into the review which was highly unprofessional.

That is how ive been acting. Im sorry for the review and how it turned out. I will be re doing it with a more honest less swayed review. I apologize for any offended Asians for you are an awesome race that I do not wish to offend. I released this video enraged from my day. Before I even filmed this I was not even headed, many Youtubers have done this and I guess im now one of them, but dont worry, It will not happen again!

Depends what you like, for me the game sucks big.

    * no open space world

    * everything is instanced + warping to the target

    * not really interesting missions after the prologue which you end with lvl 5 around

    * no auction house or world trade, just direct player trade

The main point I did not play this game was the missing open space world and thats the most interesting point why people actually start a space game, dont expect to find a game like X3, freelancer or EVE online. Black Prophecy has a very shallow gameplay and gets boring fast.

It is a shallow game which is why in my review I gave it the "Weekend Warrior" title. But honestly unless everyone had dual 6990s and quad core processors they couldnt make it fully open because the graphics are suuuper good. Could they have made it less instanced? Yes, but fully open? No.

If Germany is falling under "eastern games" you either have e skewed sense of geography (or moreover, cultural education, as an "eastern hemisphere" can hardly be called this if you start at the azores and stop just before hawaii, that's more like a "anything except america"-sphere) or have obviously never played European RPGs (Witcher, Gothic, Battle Isle, EVE). They're among the most "uneastern" games you could probably imagine...

Black Prophecy kicks ass. I'm lvl 15 so far, and this game has me absolutely hooked.

    Is it buggy? Ya.

    Is it game breaking? No.

Its combat is kick ass for sure, but it is hella grindy after a while imo as I stated in my review.
